Intricately detailed gray clay tile from the Liao Dynasty of ancient China. These clay tiles were used to decorate the inside walls of Buddhist shrines. The depiction is somewhat reminiscent of a Hindu depiction. Of course Buddhism came to China from Hindu India, and there exist of course many parallels between the Chinese and Indian variants of Buddhism. The depiction is of eight bodhisattvas of various sizes. There is a little surface crazing and a few minute chips; but no cracks or major chips. It is constructed of very strong sintered clay produced using a very special technique often employed to produce strengthened steel. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Carrying Chinese porcelain from China to Europe was an industry for the seafaring mariners of the 16th. 17th, and 18th centuries. CONDITION: Very good. Minor porcelain chips. There are minor chips in the porcelain glaze at the rider’s right front shoulder; to the rider’s waist, behind, center; to the back side of the horse’s right leg; at the edge of the horse’s stomach, right side, center; and at the rider’s left elbow. There is as well a scattering of minute porcelain chips throughout, and the top of the horse’s right ear is also chipped. Other than cleaning, there has been no restoration work. The minor chips could be repaired, without additional cost, if you would like our conservator to repair the chips. The depiction is of eight bodhisattvas of various sizes. There is a little surface crazing and a few minute chips; but no cracks or major chips. It is constructed of very strong sintered clay produced using a very special technique often employed to produce strengthened steel. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe.
