Light soil adhesions and slightly oxidized glaze(due to prolonged contact with soil while buried) A little wear consistent with any funerary item which is over five(perhaps close to six) centuries in age including the customary little blemishes expected with hand-produced ancient porcelain. Not absolutely flawless. But certainly in a very good state of preservation. DETAIL: A nicely conserved. Relatively well-preserved, and considerably larger than customary sancai glazed statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Ming Dynasty artwork. Sancai, or three-color glazes principally in yellow, green and brown was a development of the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD) Sancai(three-colored" wares were first made for burial, using lead-based glazes that produced mottled and streaky effects in green, amber-brown, and cream, with an occasional addition of blue or black. The production of such exquisite porcelain items required multiple firings of fine white clay at temperatures near 1000c(1800f) degrees. A wide variety of statuettes were commonly produced such as musicians, chamberlains(butlers) maids, cooks, even animals; all designed to serve their deceased master. Intricately detailed gray clay tile from the Liao Dynasty of ancient China. These clay tiles were used to decorate the inside walls of Buddhist shrines. The depiction is somewhat reminiscent of a Hindu depiction. Of course Buddhism came to China from Hindu India, and there exist of course many parallels between the Chinese and Indian variants of Buddhism. The depiction is of eight bodhisattvas of various sizes. There is a little surface crazing and a few minute chips; but no cracks or major chips. It is constructed of very strong sintered clay produced using a very special technique often employed to produce strengthened steel. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is definitely an antique piece. Probably dating to the Victorian period(if not earlier) A plinth with a figure of an African kneeling slave holding his arms up. The base is made from pressed brass. But the figure is heavy, and I think has been cast from bronze. He originally held something aloft as his hands are smooth on the inside and the top of his head shows where there ... morewas originally a screw or stud(now missing) He is dressed in an open shirt with one sleeve rolled up, and short trousers(just below the knee) and he has bare feet. The circular base is decorated with a floral pressed design. With a tiny rope-like edging to the top edge. The figure is attached to the base with two bolts and crude rectangular shaped fixings. If anyone has any more information about this piece(for example what he originally held) we would love to know! Condition/ Defects: The statue is in good condition; it is unpolished and has some verdigree patches. A small rough patch to the top of the head shows the shiny colour underneath the patina. The bracelet was not recovered entirely intact, as you can see, but originally it would have been a quite sizeable piece considering the slight build of ancient Romans(the ancient population tended to be considerably smaller than contemporary populations) Originally the two ends of the bracelet would have either met or even overlapped each other. However the trailing ends of each side by their nature were quite thin and fairly fragile. And susceptible to loss through either breakage or corrosion.
