Genuine Ancient Roman Iridescent Blown Glass Vial. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Blown Glass Vial. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Syria) 1st Century ... moreA.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 80 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Bowl Diameter: 11 millimeters(1/2 inch) Neck Diameter: 8 millimeters(1/3 inch) Top Lip Diameter: 16 millimeters(2/3 inch) Weight: 5.99 grams. CONDITION: Very good. Complete but likely repaired(professionally, probably by a conservator) Fairly uncommon style. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. Heavy layer of iridescence and soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome first century A.D. Roman blown glass vial of reasonably nice dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen is over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the medium-sized pieces such as this, and even smaller sized pieces are rarely recovered intact except

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 156 millimeters(6 1/4 inches) Breadth: 62 millimeters(2 1/2 inches) Depth: 47 millimeters(1 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very Good. Almost all of the paint has oxidized/decomposed except for the black of the hair. And traces of red on the robe’s sash. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any funerary item which is 1,400 years old. Some encrusted dirt which could be gently brushed away with a toothbrush. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation. Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Sui-Tang Dynasty statuary. Probably the depiction of a matronly woman of high birth. She is depicted in both a formal pose and wearing formal clothes. Once painted in white, black and red, there still remains traces of a thick layer of amount of paint remaining, though it is clear that most of the paint has oxidized/decomposed. Though most of the original black paint coloring the hair remains visible beneath the layer of soil deposition, very little else remains except for a faint trace of red along the robe’s sash. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Production of both painted and sancai glazed figurines dominated the pottery scene, and their production continued well into the Ming era which advanced the art with more intense colors and finer porcelain clay. The pottery and porcelain figures produced from the Tang all the way through the Ming Dynasties are famous even until today for their beautiful multicolored glazes and paints occurring on both mortuary pieces for funerary use as well as on utilitarian pie

ANTIQUE KASHMIR SHAWLS -SIKH MASTERPIECES Punjab Mughal Collecting Textile
Woven Masterpieces of Sikh Heritage. The Stylistic Development of the Kashmir Shawl 1780-1839” By Frank Ames. Published by the Antique Collectors’ Club in 2010. DISCUSSION: In this new. Ground-breaking work, Woven Masterpieces of Sikh Heritage, Frank Ames' unique passion for the subject reveals the events and ideas that transpired within this Khalsa(Sikh Brotherhood) movement, transforming the Kashmir shawl to one of powerful ethnic proportions. Kashmiri manuscripts, the Sikh Holy Scriptures of the Sri Adi Granth and Janam Sakhis, and illustrations of unique shawls from world collections, Ames describes with his usual penchant for exacting detail the nature and source of these enigmatic patterns that define the Sikh period. In addition, textile enthusiasts will discover new material in chapters devoted to the Mughal period, lacquer painting and Indo-Persian shawl influences and trade. ANTIQUE ART NOUVEAU WM. MORRIS LEEK EMBR'D SOCIETY EMBROIDERED TEXTILE~
ANTIQUE ART NOUVEAU WM. MORRIS LEEK EMBR'D SOCIETY EMBROIDERED TEXTILE~ I am so pleased to have found this extraordinary embroidered textile~it is truly breathtaking! The tiniest chain stitch embroidery stitches make the flower designs which is mind boggling to imagine someone could see to stitch this small.Wow! I counted 28 chain stitches per inch on the average. The thread colors are shades of green from celery to dark green. Brown, tan and a muted coral(shows up more pink in photos) I have investigated this pattern/stitch design and after 2 days of soley researching I am very confident this embroidered piece is a William Morris pattern and was done by the Leek Embroidery Society in Staffordshire at the Royal School of Needlework. If anyone has more information or disagrees.please let me know. This muted needlework used Tussore silk ... morefabric for the ground which was the finest silk worm fabric from that time and still today. There is the use of gold thread from Japan in flower like designs near the edge and metallic bronze colored trim for the edge. Please take a look at these divine photos of this piece of textile art and I think you will agree this is spectacular~ This measures 19 1/2" square. Worthy of framing for display. Perhaps circa 1890-1910 this was made for a pillow top or small table cloth. Excellent condition~albeit missing just a few gold thread flowers. Antique Wood Textile Spool from Industrial Factory ~Bobbin, Candleholder, Thread
VINTAGE LARGE WOODEN TEXTILE SPOOL This is a great old wooden textile spool. It was filled with thread and used in a factory for making clothing. It has it's original golden patina. There is a whole suitable for a candle. It is a nice large size and could be used as a pedestal. It would be great to display with a collection of different sized textile spools and bobbins. This is a nice piece of industrial folk art. I have a number of these. I have posted a photo of a random spool. But they are all in similar condition. Each measures 10" diameter X 5-1/4" tall.
ANTIQUE KASHMIR & KERMAN SHAWLS INDIAN PERSIAN TEXTILE -Nemati Collection
Shawls of the East. From Kerman to Kashmir" By Parviz Nemati. Published by PDN Publishing in 2003. DISCUSSION: A gorgeous book loaded with color plates of Kashmir and Kerman shawls of the 18th. 19th and 20th centuries from the collection of the author. Information is included on the history of these shawls from India and Persia, both as used in their native lands and in Europe and America. While Kashmir shawls are the subject of several books(though none as sumptuous as this one) Kerman shawls have been less well documented, until now. In Iran, these shawls have been woven since Safavid times and were used by the male nobility, only becoming an article of female apparel when they reached the West. The Nemati family spent four generations building the splendid private collection that is illustrated and described here. ANTIQUE JAPANESE TSUJIGAHANA TEXTILE ART - 14th-17th Century Embroidery Silk
Tsujigahana. The Flower of Japanese Textile Art” By Toshiko Ito. Published in Tokyo by Kodansha International in 1985. DISCUSSION: Tsujigahana textiles were created in Japan between the 14th and early 17th century. The technique is based on tie-dyeing. To which were added brushed black-ink pictures and patterns and, finally, layers of gold and silver imprints and embroidery. The art died in the early 17th century when plain-weave silk was largely replaced by silks with textured grounds. This beautifully illustrated study of the art, and surviving examples, was written by one of the leading Japan’s foremost textile historians. Antique 18-1900's Silk Hand Embroidered EDWARDIAN Wall Hanging Tapestry Textile
Greetings! Up for your bidding pleasure is this stunning antique silk textile with velvet backing and merrowed edges from the late 1800's-early 1900's. It appears to be EDWARDIAN in nature. It has a lovely floral motif. The hand-stitching is stunning albeit very slightly faded and time-worn which I believe actually makes this piece what it is. It's character is striking, colors still distinct and the craftsmanship is timeless. I would call this piece of artwork'small but mighty' as it is only 35 3/4" x 12" however it is very moving and unique in its own right. PERFECT for gracing the walls of your home with the right framing. The imagery is running in one direction so a wall hanging i believe would be the most appropriate usage, but it could easily be used as a gorgeous table runner as well. The lucky winning ... morebidder of this auction may want to spot clean this textile at their own discretion as I do not wish to do anything to compromise the original integrity as I received it. It is just lovely. And I welcome any questions, input, or comments about the item at any time. I hope you take the time to appreciate the photos I have provided for your viewing pleasure and thanks so much for your time. And your bidness! sbs Posted with
