SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 156 millimeters(6 1/4 inches) Breadth: 62 millimeters(2 1/2 inches) Depth: 47 millimeters(1 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very Good. Probably the depiction of a matronly woman of high birth. She is depicted in both a formal pose and wearing formal clothes. Once painted in white, black and red, there still remains traces of a thick layer of amount of paint remaining, though it is clear that most of the paint has oxidized/decomposed. Though most of the original black paint coloring the hair remains visible beneath the layer of soil deposition, very little else remains except for a faint trace of red along the robe’s sash. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Production of both painted and sancai glazed figurines dominated the pottery scene, and their production continued well into the Ming era which advanced the art with more intense colors and finer porcelain clay. The pottery and porcelain figures produced from the Tang all the way through the Ming Dynasties are famous even until today for their beautiful multicolored glazes and paints occurring on both mortuary pieces for funerary use as well as on utilitarian pie

Entirely intact except for a the normal potting blemishes associated with crude hand production; and assorted minor bumps and bruises consistent with wear due to ancient usage and then burial since ancient times. All quite normal for a 2.000 year old vase. DETAIL: A splendid. Exceptionally well preserved large sized earthenware jar from the Han Dynasty of Ancient China. The jar is the size of a very large melon– almost the size of a soccer ball. What’s really remarkable is that it is seemingly about 2,000 years old and is entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little dings and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then spent twenty centuries buried. There are simply the normal blemishes(bumps and dips) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Notwithstanding these blemishes(entirely normal for an ancient earthenware jar such as this) it has emerged from the soil in wonderful condition! There are some light soil accretions which could be brushed or washed off if one were gentle and careful. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. The first use of cowries, the shell of a mollusc that was widely available in the shallow waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, was in China around 1,200 B.C. Historically, many societies have used cowries as money, and even as recently as the middle of the last(20th) century, cowrie shells were still used in some parts of Africa. As such the cowrie shell was the most widely and longest used currency in history. So important a role did the cowrie play as money in ancient China that its pictograph was adopted in their written language for'money' During the Zhou Dynasty four different forms of money developed in ancient China. Aside from the traditional cowrie shells. Iron, copper, and wooden forms of money

In more ancient times, more often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. Later more sophisticated techniques such as this vessel saw wood blocks used to impress the design into the vessel. If you look closely at this vessel, you can see that indeed a wood block was used to impress the same design over and over again into the wet clay. You can see in many instance where the alignment of one block was not quite square with the next, some overlapping, others with a clear boundary between the impression blocks. It is a fairly large-sized piece. The size of a very large honeydew melon. ATTRIBUTION: Ancient China. Qing Dynasty, 19th Century. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 58 millimeters(2 1/3 inches) including stopper) Breadth: 40 millimeters(1 5/8 inches) Thickness: 26 millimeters(1+ inches) CONDITION: Exceptionally good. Almost perfectly preserved. A little wear consistent with any household item which is 150 or 200 years old. Not flawless, but certainly in an excellent state of preservation. DETAIL: A very cute. Splendidly preserved traditional cobalt blue on celadon green porcelain snuff bottle so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming/early Qing Dynasty artwork. The“Celadon Green” underglaze is one of the most celebrated styles of ceramic/porcelain glaze in the history of ancient China, originating thousands of years ago. The idyllic depiction is that of a floral arrangement, a classic and traditional theme. The glaze is entirely intact, the celadon green underglaze as well as the vibrant cobalt blue, and the condition of the snuff bottle, including the porcelain stopper, is virtually perfect. There is very little of the crackling/crazing of the glaze which so oftentimes afflicts antique porcelain and ceramic finishes. There is of course a little minor wear– we’re not saying it is as when new. But this is as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain snuff bottle somewhere around 150 or 200 years old. It’s not perfect, but it is about as close to perfect as you will ordinarily find of an authentic 19th century porcelain snuff bottle like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realistically one would expect some blemishes after being used for several hundred years, and there are no surprises here except that there are so few blemishes. There are of course a few

Though it’s quite possible it was produced later in time, perhaps during the late Ming Dynasty, perhaps even as late as the 18th or 19th century. The“Jun” style of ceramics was very famous throughout the Song and Yuan Dynasties, having originated in the earlier Tang Dynasty. This particular example is in remarkably good condition. Except that the three“stripes” or drips were done with fairly thick slurry, which fired quite thick, and some of the bubbles in the slurry have been chipped/crushed in the intervening centuries.
