CLASSIFICATION: Blue and White Porcelain Box/Case. ATTRIBUTION: China. Qing Dynasty, Late 1800’s to early 1900’s A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Outside Height: 82 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Outside Diameter: 131 millimeters(5 1/4 inches) Inside Height: 35 millimeters(1 3/8 inches) Inside Diameter: 114 millimeters(4 5/8 inches) Height: Inside: 35 millimeters(1 3/8 inch) Lid: 41 millimeters(1 2/3 inches) Base: 46 millimeters(1 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Entirely intact. A little wear consistent with any household item which is over a century in age. A few minute blemishes typical of handcrafted ancient porcelain of the era– almost indiscernible. Not flawless, but certainly in an excellent state of preservation. DETAIL: A nicely preserved very cute little cosmetic case or jewelry box done in the traditional blue and white porcelain so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming/early Qing Dynasty artwork. The glaze is entirely intact. Vibrant cobalt blue, and the condition of the case is exceptionally good. There are of course a few minor scuffs, marks, dings, etc. As well there are the little blemishes so typical of handcrafted porcelain of the Qing and Ming Dynasties; warts, dimples, pimples and pits; but hardly noticeable except with critical scrutiny. All of the preceding almost unnoticeable and very minor, we’re just playing critic here in the interest of full disclosure. The depiction on the outside on the top of the lid is of three men in an idyllic park setting This is as close to as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain box somewhere between one and two centuries old. While it’s not perfect. It is about as close to it as you will ordinarily find of an authentic porcelain box like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realist

The color purple was traditionally the color of royalty, and was also associated with the planet and the Roman God Jupiter the“Lord of Gods” of the Roman pantheon, also known as Zeus to the ancient Greeks) Consequentially Amethyst has been used since the dawn of recorded history to adorn the wealthy, as well as royalty. Ancient civilizations prized the stone more than many other gems which today enjoy more recognition and value, including sapphire, ruby, diamonds and emerald. For some time in the ancient world, amethyst was valued equally with the diamond, and only royal families were lawfully entitled to own and wear the stone. Amethyst was used extensively in the ancient Mediterranean world for carving intaglio gemstones and seals, particularly by the ancient Greeks and Romans. And in both ancient Greece and Rome rings of amethyst set in bronze were worn as charms against evil. The first century historian and naturalist Pliny wrote that if amethyst were worn round the neck on a cord made from dog's hair, it would afford the wearer protection against snakebite. Celebrating our historical legacy here's a very large. Very clean, 19th century faceted amethyst pear from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Exported to Russia, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medie

DETAIL: Jade was widely used by primitive peoples as tools and weapons in the Neolithic. Especially in Europe, Mexico, Asia, New Zealand, and North Africa(including ancient Egypt) The best-known finds are from the lake dwellings of Switzerland, western France, and China. The source for Europe’s Neolithic jade remains undiscovered, but it was probably from a deposit in the Alps. Nephrite is very hard and was prized for keeping a sharp edge. In the Americas the Aztecs, Mayas, Olmecs, Toltecs, and other Pre-Columbian peoples of Mexico and Central America carved jadeite for use as ornaments, amulets, and badges of rank. Nearly all of these Meso-American jades are of various shades of green, with emerald green the most highly prized color among the Aztecs. The jade carvings range from plaques, figurines, small masks, pendants, to of course, tools and weapons. The widespread use of jade died out in Meso-America after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Here are two nice quality 19th century antique hand crafted/shaped/polished semi-precious jade gemstones. The gemstones were hand shaped and polished by a 19th century Russian artisan. Topaz was associated with Apollo and Jupiter(Zeus to the ancient Greeks) as Topaz was associated with the sun, and both Apollo and Jupiter were solar deities. Both Julius Caesar and his heir Octavian Augustus held Apollo in special reverence. Augustus credited Apollo with his victory over Marc Antony’s Eastern Roman and Cleopatra’s Egyptian naval forces, and erected a magnificent temple to Apollo at Actium overlooking the site of the famous naval battle, as well as an even grander temple on the Palatine in Rome. In the Middle Ages it was believed that a topaz mounted in gold and worn around the neck would dispel enchantments and ward off death. Topaz was also used to treat medical ailments. Topaz powdered and drunk in wine was believed to cure asthma, insomnia, burns and hemorrhages. Celebrating this historical legacy here are two nice. Eye clean, white topaz semi-precious gemstones hand cut into faceted pears, with much the sparkle and flash of diamond. Used for centuries as a diamond substitute in Russia, while not absolutely flawless, these are gorgeous crystal-like faceted pears cut from good quality topaz. There is of course a little minor wear– we’re not saying it is as when new. But this is as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain snuff bottle somewhere around 150 or 200 years old. It’s not perfect, but it is about as close to perfect as you will ordinarily find of an authentic 19th century porcelain snuff bottle like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realistically one would expect some blemishes a century or two after it was produced, and there are no surprises here except that there are so few blemishes. There are a few production blemishes. Again really not noticeable, and quite typical of hand-crafted porcelain of the late Ming/early Qing Dynasties. These are normal potter blemishes associated with hand produced ceramics(bumps, warts, and acne pits) All of these blemishes are virtually unnoticed– but

These two gemstones are of exceptional quality, unblemished by the inclusions which are normally found interlaced within lower grade turquoise gemstones. Ancient Greeks and Persians, amongst many other ancient cultures, thought opals gave their owner the gift of prophecy and prevented diseases. This rather uncommon semi-precious gemstone known as“fire opal” was mined in nineteenth century Turkey where it had been originally produced perhaps as early as 3,000 B.C. it went to one of the fabulous jewelry production centers of Czarist Russia. It was hand cut and faceted into this gorgeous gemstone for use in a piece of elaborate jewelry for which Renaissance and Victorian Russia was so renowned. It possesses ... moregreat lustre, lots of flash, and at least to the eye, is essentially flawless. It is truly gorgeously colored, brilliant, sparkling semi-precious gemstone. The trained eye will easily discern from the photo that the gemstone has been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment. Unlike today's computer controlled machine processes, the cut and finish of gemstones such as this is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. Two centuries ago mankind was more or less limited to surface deposits or near surface deposits of gemstones. Higher quality gemstones which today are routinely mined from beneath hundreds of meters. Even kilometers beneath the earth's surface, were simply inaccessible then. So antique gemstones must be appreciated as antiques first, gemstones second. The relatively superlative quality of contemporary gemstones routinely mined from deep beneath the earth's surface today were simply not accessible two cen

However under strong white light, the stone magically transforms itself to a rose color with peach undertones, or a violet-blue, depending upon the intensity and color of the light source. No matter what light source we used to image this gemstone, whether scanner or camera, it turned color. In hand, under most lighting conditions, it is most assuredly green. But the charm of these remarkable gemstones, at least in the higher qualities, is the dramatic color change they are capable of. And true to its reputation, the light of the scanner turned this gemstone a bright rose-peach. And a decent digital camera shows it as violet-purple. Alexandrite is capable of all of these colors, true chameleons, quite extraordinary precious gemstones.
