Light soil adhesions and slightly oxidized glaze(due to prolonged contact with soil while buried) A little wear consistent with any funerary item which is over five(perhaps close to six) centuries in age including the customary little blemishes expected with hand-produced ancient porcelain. Not absolutely flawless. But certainly in a very good state of preservation. DETAIL: A nicely conserved. Relatively well-preserved, and considerably larger than customary sancai glazed statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Ming Dynasty artwork. Sancai, or three-color glazes principally in yellow, green and brown was a development of the Tang Dynasty(618-907 AD) Sancai(three-colored" wares were first made for burial, using lead-based glazes that produced mottled and streaky effects in green, amber-brown, and cream, with an occasional addition of blue or black. The production of such exquisite porcelain items required multiple firings of fine white clay at temperatures near 1000c(1800f) degrees. A wide variety of statuettes were commonly produced such as musicians, chamberlains(butlers) maids, cooks, even animals; all designed to serve their deceased master. This particular depiction is that of a young female, with a detachable head, likely depicted a female attendant or servant, holding a tiger. All of the preceding almost unnoticeable and very minor, we’re just playing critic here in the interest of full disclosure. CONDITION: Very good. Entirely intact. There’s an old repair to a rim chip. A little wear consistent with any household item which is a century old. Not flawless, but certainly in an excellent state of preservation. DETAIL: A splendidly preserved. Petite(four-cup, or two mug) hand painted“famille rose” style porcelain teapot so wonderfully characteristic of the very popular export Qing Dynasty porcelain china. The particular style was extremely popular both in England as well as the USA during the 1800’s. This is a wonderful example of this very famous produce. The glaze is entirely intact, a very colorful park setting quite characteristic of Ming and Qing Dynasty porcelain. The depiction consists of six different people(including what appears to be one child) seemingly involved in leisure activities in a setting which includes shrubs, a fence, etc. Again, a quite typical depiction of an idyllic park setting. The condition of the pot is very good. There is an old repair(we did not made the repair) to a rim chip at the top rim. You can see it in the photographs. Notwithstanding the repaired chip, the porcelain glaze is otherwise in very good condition, still brightly colored, not oxidized or crackled. There are of course a few minor scuffs, marks, dings, etc. as well as a few of the ordinary potting blemishes(warts, dimples, pimples and pits) again really not noticeable, and quite typical of hand-crafted porcelain of the late Ming/ea

Head was broken off and reattached by our conservator. Virtually all of the paint has oxidized/decomposed. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any votive/funerary item which is 1.400 years old. Some encrusted dirt which could be gently brushed away with a toothbrush. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation– and unrepaired! Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Sui-Tang Dynasty statuary. The statuette depicts a man performing a martial arts move. Something akin to contemporary“mushu” The roots of mushu martial arts extends back at least 4,000 years, and this statuette reflects that heritage. Once painted, it appears that the body was perhaps painted all white or principally white, as it seems that there remains some residual paint beneath the soil deposition layer. However most of the paint this statuette originally possessed has oxidized/decomposed. It does stand on its own, but precariously, you would want to give it some support or something to lean on, as otherwise it does topple easily. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Production of both painted and sancai glazed figurines dominated the pottery scene, and their production continued well into the Ming era which advanced the art with more intense colors and finer porcelain clay. Intricately detailed gray clay tile from the Liao Dynasty of ancient China. These clay tiles were used to decorate the inside walls of Buddhist shrines. The depiction is somewhat reminiscent of a Hindu depiction. Of course Buddhism came to China from Hindu India, and there exist of course many parallels between the Chinese and Indian variants of Buddhism. The depiction is of eight bodhisattvas of various sizes. There is a little surface crazing and a few minute chips; but no cracks or major chips. It is constructed of very strong sintered clay produced using a very special technique often employed to produce strengthened steel. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Splendidly preserved traditional blue and white porcelain snuff bottle so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming/early Qing Dynasty artwork. The tranquil depiction is that of three men conversing in a manicured park setting amongst large birds, tress, foliage, shrubs, etc. The glaze is entirely intact, vibrant cobalt blue, and the condition of the snuff bottle, except for the fact that it is missing a stopper. There is very little of the crackling/crazing of the glaze which so oftentimes afflicts antique porcelain and ceramic finishes. There is of course a little minor wear– we’re not saying it is as when new. But this is as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain snuff bottle somewhere around 150 or 200 years old. It’s not perfect, but it is about as close to perfect as you will ordinarily find of an authentic 19th century porcelain snuff bottle like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realistically one would expect some blemishes a century or two after it was produced, and there are no surprises here except that there are so few blemishes. There are a few production blemishes. Again really not noticeable, and quite typical of hand-crafted porcelain of the late Ming/early Qing Dynasties. Qing Dynasty, Late 19th or Early 20th Century. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 72 millimeters(2 7/8 inches) including stopper) Breadth: 41 millimeters(1 2/3 inches) Thickness: 26 millimeters(1+ inches) CONDITION: Exceptionally good. Almost perfectly preserved. A little wear consistent with any household item which is 100 years old. Not flawless, but certainly in an excellent state of preservation. Stopper intact. DETAIL: A very cute. Splendidly preserved bone and horn snuff bottle so wonderfully characteristic of late Qing Dynasty artwork. It was entirely crafted by hand, from the cutting and polishing of the bone vessel and dyed horn base and top, to the fine engraving and painting. The snuff bottle is entirely intact, and the condition of the snuff bottle, including the intact stopper, is virtually perfect. There is of course a little minor wear- we're not saying it is as when new. But this is as good as one can reasonably expect of a bone snuff bottle somewhere around 100 years old. It's not perfect, but it is about as close to perfect as you will ordinarily find of an authentic 19th(or early 20th) century snuff bottle like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realistically one would expect some blemishes of a personal article such as this after being used for a century, and there are no surprises here except that there are so few blemishes. There are a few blemishes. Again really not noticeable, and quite typical of hand-crafted snuff bottles of the late Ming Qing Dynasty. All of these blemishes are virtually unnoticed- but we're playing critic in the name of full disclosure. Two vibrant dragons perch on both sides. The dragons have eyes made of bone. The fantastic face shows off the bone inlaid eyes. The teeth are made of bone also. The mask is expertly carved. It is carved out of one piece of huanghuali wood. The wood is dense and the weight is over 700 grams. Huanghuali wood is a rare Chinese hard wood. The tree is small and it takes a long time to grow.
