Han Dynasty, 100 B.C. 100 A.D. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. There are some minor soil adhesions. The paint/pigment originally adorning the clay horse head has decomposed/oxidized. And is virtually absent except for a few tiny ... moreresidues. As well there are the normal blemishes(warts, dimples, pimples and pits) one expects with handcrafted ceramics. Not flawless, but certainly in a wonderful state of preservation! No chips, no cracks, no breakage, no repairs. Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved black earthenware horse head. Very handsome and masculine in appearance, and so wonderfully characteristic of Han Dynasty statuary. The horse head was originally painted with white and red pigments. Unfortunately only a few very faint residues of the original paint remain, as the paint eventually oxidizes and decomposes to the point where there is only a powdery residue. All which is really left not is the black clay substrate material. The horse was a very valuable possession in Han. China, both to the nobleman and warrior. The noble character and strength of the animal is wonderfully conveyed in this piece of art. Ornate tribal headdress pre 1950's. The headdresses were usually passed down through the family. Ornaments were added through the years. This is a museum quality piece. This piece comes on a carved bust. Also included is a tribal neck piece. Measures almost 20" from the top of the hat to the bottom of the back panel. their are two Afghani earrings sewn on the back. Camel tassles on the side pieces. Glass and old coins. I was told that this dates 1930-1950's. the bust could be newer. But has been well loved. It did not come with the head dress. Despite it's small scale. This Pre Columbian portrait mask exudes a powerful energy Beautifully and carefully carved. I initially thought it was modelled in terracotta but having handled and inspected the mounted head, I judge it to be a hard stone carving Please correct me if I am wrong- I am not pretending to be an expert With prominent features and a band across the forehead. A rare 19th century Tribal Art Stick or Club. Hand Carved with a Bird's Head or possibly a Snake's Head(difficult to distinguish which! The handle has two finger indents on one side and three on the other. All along the shaft appears to be snake carvings which are wonderfully carved in detail. Carved entirely from one piece of wood the patina is excellent and just as you would expect from a period carving with the bottom section patina through. Years of handling and gripping this part of the stick/club. A small hole is evident at the bottom. And most probably would have housed a loop or string for carrying. A most interesting indeed. I cannot determine which country it originates from or how old it is. but its got age. it is NOT modern.going by the gentlemans features he looks African. Nubian, or even Aboriginal.as you can see he has a beard and a tach and a short haircut. his right eye.this looks damaged.as if he has had an old wound.it is NOT like his other eye.also there is a circular sort of mark below it.again to me I would day this ... moreis depicting and injury of the eye and below it.the most unusual thing is. wrapped around his head as if it were a scarf or some sort of hat.is a SNAKE. you can see the snake is well carved too and has brass domed nail eyes.the snake is carved at the back too. but the rest of the carving is from the front only.then onto the body of the man. again its rather unusual. as he has clothing. a shirt or waistcoat. with his right hand tucked into the shirt and his left hand can be seen easy.the button holes can be seen too. these are double.indicating Antique clothing.rather than modern attire. So. this brings me to MORE questions. who is the figure representing? maybe a local man. A tribe elder, a chief, a mythical figure.I am still no further on with identifying which country it was made in. its most interesting anyway. I am sure some of you will know exactly what you are looking at. He is 23 and half inch tall x 11 inch wide at the widest part x nearly 3 and half inch wide.the wood MAY be stained.and it has natural cracking. no damage as such just natural drying out.

Antique 19C Borneo Dyak Mandau Head Hunter's Sword Parang Ihlang. A highly decorated blade. Quite a rarity to see so much ornamentation, brass inserts discs are along all four faces of the blade to various degrees. The spine is beautifully profiled. There is geometric engraved pattern running along top edges of blade throughout. All brass inserts are in place; none amiss. There are some past areas of corrosion that have been left, most notably 1st third of back of blade which show some pitting please refer to images. Otherwise pitting is minimal. There are signs of use to the edge two very tiny nicks and the tip could be resharpened, very ship shape and surprisingly sharp though. There is a very slight curve leaning of the blade to the right(see images) The scabbard has a few scuffs to the beautiful carving and 3 pieces of woven binding ... moreties are missing. The braided copper which is still present has corroded and broken to the back. These could be restored without much difficulty. I've left the blade as is. It could be polished if desired there is also a build up old oil around decorated areas that could be cleaned. LARGE WOOD CARVING ~ AFRICAN OR BALINESE ~ WOMAN WITH BASKET OF FRUIT ON HEAD
Thank you for viewing this auction for one. 1) of what is possibly African or Balinese wood carving. This is a large carving that stands 34” tall. The carvings are out of a dark and dense wood, however I am not sure of the exact species. The wood coloring is a rich brown in some areas, and a faded beige color in others. The image of a woman carrying a basket on her head. The basket is filled with a coconut sized fruit. The woman is also carrying in her right hand what appears to be the same type of fruit that is in her basket. The woman is balancing the basket on her head, and her left-hand is supporting the basket. There are no maker marks on this piece to establish its specific origin. I am unaware of the age of these carved busts. The condition of this carving is good. The carving appears to be fairly old. However, as stated I am unsure ... moreof an exact age. The wood used in the carving has natural flaws which includes splits, cracks, and dents. The finish used on each piece is appears to be in good condition. In the basket on the top of the woman’s head there are three coconuts? On one of the coconuts there appears to be damage to the carved stem; the stem appears to have broken off. There are a few larger splits throughout this piece. These splits appear to be natural, a result of the wood drying. Please refer to the pictures provided to can the best sense of the condition items explained. This sculpture measures 34” overall. And is about 7” wide at the carving’s base.
