Entirely intact. A little wear consistent with any household item which is over a century in age. A few minute blemishes typical of handcrafted ancient porcelain of the era– almost indiscernible. Not flawless, but certainly in an excellent state of preservation. DETAIL: A nicely preserved very cute little cosmetic case or jewelry box done in the traditional blue and white porcelain so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming/early Qing Dynasty artwork. The glaze is entirely intact. Vibrant cobalt blue, and the condition of the case is exceptionally good. There are of course a few minor scuffs, marks, dings, etc. As well there are the little blemishes so typical of handcrafted porcelain of the Qing and Ming Dynasties; warts, dimples, pimples and pits; but hardly noticeable except with critical scrutiny. All of the preceding almost unnoticeable and very minor, we’re just playing critic here in the interest of full disclosure. The depiction on the outside on the top of the lid is of three men in an idyllic park setting This is as close to as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain box somewhere between one and two centuries old. While it’s not perfect. It is about as close to it as you will ordinarily find of an authentic porcelain box like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realist

CLASSIFICATION: ... moreBlue and White Painted Porcelain Snuff Bottle. ATTRIBUTION: Ancient China. Qing Dynasty, 19th Century. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 63 millimeters(2 1/2 inches) Bowl Diameter: 50 millimeters(2 inches) Base Diameter: 26 millimeters(1 inch) CONDITION: Exceptionally good. Almost perfectly preserved, except for a missing stopper. A little wear consistent with any household item which is 150 or 200 years old. Not flawless, but certainly in an excellent state of preservation. DETAIL: A very cute. Splendidly preserved traditional blue and white porcelain snuff bottle so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming/early Qing Dynasty artwork. The tranquil depiction is that of three men conversing in a manicured park setting amongst large birds, tress, foliage, shrubs, etc. The glaze is entirely intact, vibrant cobalt blue, and the condition of the snuff bottle, except for the fact that it is missing a stopper. There is very little of the crackling/crazing of the glaze which so oftentimes afflicts antique porcelain and ceramic finishes. There is of course a little minor wear– we’re not saying it is as when new. But this is as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain snuff bottle somewhere around 150 or 200 years old. It’s not perfect, but it is about as close to perfect as you will ordinarily find of an authentic 19th century porcelain snuff bottle like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realistically one would expect some blemishes a century or two after it was produced, and there are no surprises here except that there are so few blemishes. There are a few production blemishes. Again really not noticeable, and quite typical of hand-crafted porcelain of the late Ming/early Qing Dynasties. These are normal potter blemishes associated with hand produced ceramics(bumps, warts, and acne pits) All of these blemishes are virtually unnoticed– but

The ancient Greeks also believed that wearing topaz would dispel sadness and strengthen the wearer’s intellect. Both the Greeks and Romans greatly valued topaz as a gemstone. Ancient Romans credited topaz with preventing sickness of the chest and abdominal pain. Both Julius Caesar and his heir Octavian Augustus held Apollo in special reverence. Augustus credited Apollo with his victory of Marc Antony, and erected a magnificent temple to Apollo at Actium overlooking the site of the famous naval battle, as well as an even grander temple on the Palatine in Rome. His reign was depicted as a Golden Age of abundance and peace by many Roman authors. A mythical age when Saturn was said to have ruled. In remembrance and celebration of that age, a great(week-long) feast called Saturnalia was held throughout the Roman Empire during the winter months around the time of the winter solstice. It is thought that the festivals of Saturnalia and Lupercalia were the roots of the carnival(Mardi Gras" in the USA) Roman depictions of Saturn generally showed the god with a sickle in his left hand and a bundle of wheat in his right. CLASSIFICATION: Blue and White Painted Porcelain Snuff Bottle. ATTRIBUTION: Ancient China. Qing Dynasty, 19th Century. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 60 millimeters(2 3/8 inches) including stopper) Breadth: 37 millimeters(1 1/2 inches) Depth: 18 millimeters(3/4 inch) CONDITION: Exceptionally good. Almost perfectly preserved. The tranquil depiction is that of a number of people enjoying a serene park setting amongst large birds, tress, foliage, shrubs, etc. The glaze is entirely intact, vibrant cobalt blue, and the condition of the snuff bottle, including the porcelain stopper, is virtually perfect. The green, yellow, and red are hand painted accents, and are likewise in very good condition. Of course realistically one would expect some blemishes after being used for several hundred years, and there are no surprises here except that there are so few blemishes. There are of course a few minute production blemishes. Again really not noticeable, and quite typica
