This lot includes one serving spoon made by William Hookey(1733-1812) of Newport. Rhode Island who was an active silversmith from 1764-1799. Spoon bears his maker's mark and period monogram and weighs 32.9 grams. Another spoon was created by Nehemiah Dodge of Providence. Rhode Island. Dodge was a m aster silversmith to Jabez Gorham in 1806. Dodge was in a number of partnerships: Pitman& Dodge with Saunders Pitman c. 1790; with William Stanton 1796-1798; Dodge& Williams with Stephen Williams ... more1799-1805; and with William Greene 1805-1806. This spoon(which weighs 17 dwts. is stamped"N. Dodge. which predates his partnerships. Dodge's spoon weighs 17 dwts. One of the other spoons is stamped"12lothsilb, which is a German mark for silver content(I think all these are coin silver because they predate the use of Sterling Silver in the U.S. It weighs 27.5 dwts. The last spoon(which weighs 28.2 dwts) has a part of the tip either worn off or it was damaged at some point in time. However, it is smooth, so I'm not sure what happened. At any rate, I have taken photos of monograms and marks. I ha ve additional coin silver spoons created by Early American Silversmiths/patriots from this same estate listed individually in my Ebay store. The pieces are well used. Offered here is a lovely and elegant 19th century napkin ring. Coin or sterling silver, possibly from the aesthetic period, with strong oriental influences. The design centers on an initial"N" flanked on either side by different birds with wings open perched on branches, possibly bamboo. These are britecut etched. Above and below are slightly raised borders of connected open circles enclosing a central dot in each circle. The ring is 1 1/2" wide with a diameter of 1 3/4" and weighs around 1 1/4 ounces. The ring is in lovely condition with signs of only a bit of gentle wear or usage. RARE 1808 SILVER LADLE (made by Nathaniel Vernon, Charleston, South Carolina).
A RARE and historical SILVER LADLE(coin silver) from the 1806-1808 era of great South Carolina silversmiths. This 13.5" long piece of flatware was crafted by one of the top ten Charleston. SC silversmiths, Nathaniel Vernon(see his mark on handle, and the comparison to another'Vernon' ladle's mark) who is well represented at the Charleston Museum Silver Room. It weighs 5.8 ounces, with means just the silver content of the piece is valued at around $155 by current silver bullion prices. As mentioned in subtitle, the bumps and uneven surface of the cup part could be due to the ladle being hidden from Union troops during the Civil War when Charleston was sacked in 1865. This 8 1/2" berry spoon is in wonderful condition. No bends beaks. Dents or creases. The pattern is crisp and the engraved bowl looks new. It retains most if not all of its gold wash on the bowl. Nice flared shoulders. The spoon has minor surface scratches indicative of use and age. But is in overall excellent condition. The tip of the spoon is crisp and sharp(see photos) Weight: 17.1 grams Length: 5 and 5/8 inches. Bowl is 1 and 7/8 inches. The makers mark of J. B. Ginochio is clearly stamped on the back handle within a rectangle. John B. Ginochio was active between 1833 to 1862 as a New York silversmith listed in the New York Historical Society. This is a late federal sugar bowl. Made by either Samuel Williamson of Philadelphia or George W. Riggs of Georgetown. Maryland 1800-1810 and Baltimore, Md 1810-1816(see my friend’s site below for more information. It belonged to John Pickrell and(Viriginia) Anne Wilson Pickrell. Who lived in Georgetown. It descended in the Pickrell Risque family until now. It measures 9” handle to handle. 4.5” wide, 8” tall. Weighs 17.05 troy oz. The bowl itself is in good condition. A few dents, and wear as expected, good patina. The lid has two large pieces of silver or un-melted solder, which I presume are antique repairs. Antique Coin Silver 5 Spoons Rare - N Hawley NY 53 Grams Collect Or Scrap
Welcome! This auction is for a set of five(5) antique coin silver spoons made by New York silversmith N. Hawley. These spoons are very old. And have been in my family's possession for many years, yet I am uncertain of their exact age. They are all matching, possibly dessert spoons, and measure about 5 1/4" inches long. Total weight on my scale for all five spoons is 53 grams. These spoons do look rough and need a very good cleaning. They have been stored for years and untouched. Please view all my pictures for the condition of this set. There are many dings, but the spoons don't appear bent or feel weak. I do think this set is very old, and possibly early 1800s from what little info I could gather from the markings. They have almost a handmade look to them. Each one is engraved on the back N Hawley. Hand chased repousse grapes and leaves on wide outer rim of each compote with smooth silver underlining. Each compote has a slightly different tiny floral design around 4 inch square footed base with hammered underside. The bottom inside of bowls are hand chased with mirrored design on bottom outside. Beautiful handiwork from J. Curry of Philadelphia! Marked: J.
