Fully hallmarked Birmingham 1916 and the makers mark T.H. I looked up the mark and there are two extremely similar T.H. makers marks both from Birmingham. One is Thomas Heatley and the other which I lean towards is Thomas Heasley. The reason for this is the T is lower than the H and this is mirrored in T. Heasleys mark. In addition the piece is also hallmarked on the front of the lid, although it is very feint. A real collectable piece! Match holders. Also known as matchsafes or vesta cases, date to the mid-19th century, when friction matches were first introduced. While a boon to cigar-puffing fat cats and homemakers alike, early friction matches, which were also called vestas and Lucifers, almost did their job too well, sometimes bursting into flame in a user’s pocket. Matchsafes keep these hair-trigger fire sticks from rubbing together and combusting prematurely. The golden age of matchsafes was around 1870 until the 1930's. When matchbooks and cigarette lighters obviated the need for most match holders. At home, wall and tabletop matchsafes were used, primarily by women for domestic uses such as lighting a stove or fireplace. This quality antique silver vesta match safe measures 43mm(1.75' x 36mm(1.5' and weighs 36 grams. It is hallmarked for solid Sterling Silver(photo3) and I think is probably continental in origin perhaps Hanau. It is cast silver with good detailing with a hinged lid with a shell that acts as the striker. I have seen similar brass versions of this vesta but not silver. This is a quality Edwardian Silver Plate Match Safe Vesta Case CICA 1910's This Vesta has been hand engraved in a Bright Cut Floral Foliate Design typical of the 1890's Art Nouveau Period. In the centre there is a large Cartouche in the form of a Heart. The Reverse is plain polished Silver. The Vesta is approx 4.7cms high by 3.5 cms wide and weighs 25.26 grams. The condition is very good for an item over 100 years and presents well with only some surface rubbing/wear. The Seams are fine. The match safe is covered with black niello enamel in a checkerboard design. The case has the monogram LG engraved on the front. Although we are not positive what the monogram is. This case was made around the late 1800s. The case is marked on the inside edge with 84 for 875 purity silver. A city mark for Moscow, and a makers mark of GK for Gustav Klingert. The inside of the lid is also stamped with the city mark and the 84. The case is in good condition overall. It has some surface wear commensurate with age and light use. Here is a very unique tin litho advertising match holder. Made in the shape of a Monitor Wrought Steel Range. It advertises Wm. Miller Range and Furnace Co. in Cincinnati and I'm thinking it dates to the 1890s. The front and top show burners. Doors, damper, etc. and both sides have nice clear lines of advertising. It is about 4 7/8" tall, 3 1/2" wide and 2 1/8" deep. It is either free standing or can be hung on the wall. Lots of photos to show condition. There is some minor litho loss, but all printing is legible. Not dented up and the lid hinge is good. I have not cleaned in any way lest I screw something up. The matches will not be shipped. This item is a vintage Match Safe. It has double pockets or standing urns. a match striker. The back has" pat(a mark I can't read) Jan 16 1867" The house this came from was an old stone house, that is in up state NY area that was settled early in our country's history, Victorian in style and age. Antique Victorian Cast Iron Match Safe Striker Bradley & Hubbard Double Urns
Up for sale is an antique Victorian 1800's cast iron wall mount match safe with striker plate made by Bradley and Hubbard of West Meriden. Connecticut. It has double urn shaped match holders with floral swags. It is 4" wide by 4" long. It is marked on the back with the impressed"1800" and the raised"PAT. APPLD. FOR" and"BRADLEY& HUBBARD CONN. WEST MERIDEN" The condition is very good with the exception of some light rust at the center of the shield shaped back plate. Insurance is included in the shipping fee. Vintage~ 19thC Match Stick Safe/ Holder Silver Plate (Hinged Lid)
this rare and very unique piece is in great condition for it`s age and all. with visible wear/tear on it as is seen in the pictures of just how truly nice and very unique this is.light buffing/polishing is suggested. as i would have done it but i am unsure how to properly clean it with out ruining/damaging it.the lid pops up with a push of the button. the total length of this is 3 inches and the width is a little over 1 and a 1/2 inches wide.it is around 1/2 inch thick. this would make for a great collectors piece. please pay with in three days. ship item out upon receipt of payment. please look at all my pictures as they are a part of mt description and if i for got to mention any thing about this item the pictures will help with that.
