Very Early & Exceptionally Rare Pair of Hester Bateman Silver Spoons. 1761
My last pair! Offered for auction is this pair of very early Hester Bateman dinner spoons. They are fully hallmarked for sterling silver with the date letter commencing in May 1760 to May 1761. Hester registered her mark at Goldsmiths Hall on April the 16th. 1761. These spoons were made just one month into her illustrious career. I have used the description of exceptionally rare and this is exactly what they are. Take some time to scroll through Hester Bateman silverware sold on both US and UK Ebay sites and you will not find any item made before the 1770's! In fact a lengthy search through the major auction houses will not produce any results for Hester Bateman silver this early. I am convinced that these examples of early Hester Bateman spoons qualify for museum status. Why is this the case? Allow me to quote from the definitive reference ... morework published in 1959- David Shure's"Hester Bateman Queen of English Silversmiths" Hester registered her mark in 1761. Why. Then is there so little Bateman silver dating from then until 1774? so little in fact that Sir Charles Jackson in his great work on English hallmarks entirely overlooked Hester’s entry for 1761, and attributed the script‘H.B’ for this year to Henry Bailey. However he seems to have had little confidence in this attribution himself for he follows it with probably in parentheses. David Shure. In 1959 states that in his day many silver dealers refused to acknowledge the existance of Hester Bateman silverware dating from 1761. And to quote further: There is. In effect so little Bateman silver for 1761 to 1774 because almost the entire output of the Bateman workshop for that period was work commissioned for other silversmiths. Most of Hester's work was overstamped by the silversmiths and jewellers that commissioned her work. To find such early spoons with Hester's unmolested mark is very rare. And the Holy Grail for Hester Bateman collectors. The hallmarks are bottom struck as was the norm at this time. When the assayer stamped the ma

Antique Sterling Silver Salver Tray Clawed Feet Hester Bateman London 1787
This is a lovely sterling silver salver tray with clawed feet by Hester Bateman of London. Made in 1787. It is 7” in diameter and 1 1/8” tall, and weighs 7.45 troy ounces. The inside engraving is quite worn. It looks as though it was once a wreathed coat of arms with a one word Latin motto below it. With a little luck and a lot of work, one might be able to figure it out. One problem with it is that the inside beading is actually a row of round holes. I presume the metal at the beading was relatively thin, and just wore through as it aged. Unless someone can come up with a reason for ventilating the salver with holes, I will stick with wear as an explanation. The family I purchased it from had a MO license number engraved on the bottom. An excellent item for a collector! Extraordinary Ca.1784 Hester Bateman Sterling Sugar Castor, original as found!!
Here is one of the most exceptional Hester Bateman Castors you will ever see. Hester Bateman as you all know is possibly the greatest woman silversmith in history. Even today. Silversmiths use her techniques and models. This beautiful and ornate castor circa. 1784 was just found by me in a very old New Hampshire estate dating back to the late 1700's. It was tucked away in a drawer in a bedroom and had no doubt been there for decades. It is in as found condition and I have not attempted to clean or anything. This piece would look amazing when professionally cleaned by an expert in sterling. But I am not going to have that done, I will leave it to whomever the lucky person is who wins this piece. It is full of beautiful and ornate work. Flowers on all sides and intricate silver work are shown throughout the piece. It does not have any damage ... morethat I can see and is fully intact. This piece was not done hastily. It was done with a gentle and truly gifted hand. It has the full hallmarks on the bottom of the piece. The maker's mark of HB is crisp and clear. The lion to signify the.925 Sterling purity is present. The crowned leopard or cat shows that it was made in London and the date mark indicates it was made in 1784. Definitely one of her earlier pieces! The top lid also has the lion mark to signify the sterling purity of.925. Stands 5 1/2 inches tall and 1 7/8 inches at widest point. Be one of the few to own such an important piece of history by one of the greatest silversmiths! This auction will start at $0.99 There is a modest reserve on this piece as it deserves. Shipping cost includes full insurance! On May-31-13 at 16:09:11 PDT. Seller added the following information: Total weight on this beautiful piece is 2.5 ounces

Superb HESTER BATEMAN Georgian Fancy Cast Handle SALT SPOON-Gilt Bowl-NR
NOTE: Please see my other auctions for additional pieces of English silver. I am happy to combine shipping on any purchases. Up for bid is a highly unusual English Georgian sterling master salt spoon with a cast pierced handle. Apparently by Hester Bateman. The spoon is 4 5/16 inches long and weighs 11 grams. The bowl is shaped like a scallop shell and has a mercury-gilded interior. The delicate cast handle has engraved highlights on the front. It is monogrammed“T” on the back of the handle. The piece bears a single maker’s mark of Hester Bateman as shown. This is a highly unusual piece. But it appears to be authentic. I thought it might be one arm of a broken sugar tong. But it is much too thin, there is no sign of a break at the tip, and the monogram on the back seems to be of the period. The patina is good throughout. I think it is just ... morea great piece of Hester Bateman silver. Condition on the piece is fairly good. There are some tiny flaws and stress cracks in the handle but no breaks. It has not been buffed or altered. An amazing silver salt spoon. I accept most forms of payment; please contact me for details. International bidders are welcome; please contact me for estimated shipping costs. New Jersey residents please add 7% sales tax. Or provide a valid resale number. Buyer pays for shipping and insurance(if desired) Domestic shipping will be by Priority Mail($6.25) Or in a first-class bubble mailer($2.35) your choice. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions; I aim to please! Please let me know if you would like to see other views or close-ups. Bid early and often. And good luck!

NICE 1700's HESTER BATEMAN ANTIQUE COIN SILVER TEAPOT .900
Hester Neden or Needham was baptised in London on 7 October 1708. The daughter of John Neden or Needham. On 20 May 1732 she married a gold chain maker and wire maker called John Bateman. During their marriage, she gave birth to six children: John Joseph(Joss) Letitia, Ann, Peter, William and Jonathan. John Bateman died of consumption(tuberculosis) in 1760, leaving his tools to his wife in his will. She took over the family business and registered her first hallmark at the Goldsmith's Hall in 1761, simply"HB" in script. From the time up to the late 1770s, not much Bateman work is known, possibly because she was supplying pieces other silversmiths that were subsequently overstamped with their marks. This original 1700'S Hallmarked Hester Bateman Coin Silver Teapot is very rare and in very good condition considering it's ... moreextreme age. as in the condition description, the lid and handle are tight and the teapot still holds water without leaks. there are a couple very small dents, and the spout has a very slight bend to the point that it is almost unnoticeable. 1789-1810 Georgian Sterling 4 Piece Coffee Set, Sugar Basket by Hester Bateman
This auction is for a Sterling Silver Tea and Coffee Set that I have had in my personal collection for the last 15 or so years. The set was made in London by different makers as indicated below. I beleive that probably sometime in the 19th century. The set was given the uniform diamond pattern repousse work that it presently has. The all-over diamond pattern with floral motifs in the centers of the diamonds gives the set a very formal look, almost French in appearance. However, all of the marked pieces are by London makers and bear London hallmarks. The cream pitcher is not marked but is of a ca. 1800 form and construction. Total weight of all four pieces is 1304 grams. All measurements and weights below are close approximations. This means that I am weighing them on a kitchen scale rather than a jeweler's scale so weights may vary a ... morefew grams. I am also eyeballing measuremants using a tape measure so actual mmeasurements may be a little different. Detailed descriptions of each piece follow: 1. Sugar Basket. Hallmarked London Sterling. Date letter for 1789-90. Maker: Script"HB" for Hester Bateman. Weight of Sugar Basket is approximately 212 grams. Height approximately 7 and 1/4 inches to top of handle when handle extended. 7 1/8 inches long. 4 1/4 inches wide. Height to top cormer of basket 4 1/8. Condition: The basket is in good condition. It has a pinhead dent at the top of the handle but otherwise no major dents or bends. Original brightcut engraving can be seen on the foot. As stated above, I believe the diamond-pattern repousse work is later. 2. Coffee or Chocolate Pot. Marked London Sterling. Date letter for 1810-11. Maker Mark is a block"RG" believed to be Robert Garrard. Weight is approximately 648 grams. Height approximately 8 inches tall to top of finial. Approximately 7 and 1/4 inches from spout to handle. Approximately 4 and 3/4 inches across the middle. This is a very nice and heavy pot with some condition issues. There is a dent on the foot near the handle(pictured) Pot stand
