Please scroll down the page to see additional photographs of this item. 1801 ENGLISH STERLING SILVER CHAFING DISH HOUGHAM Presented is an impressive antique English silver chafing dish. The chafing dish has a sterling silver stand made by Solomon Hougham of London. The dish and the lid are silver plated and made by Hawksworth. Eyre& Company of Sheffield. The dish has a handsome threaded design on the stand and elegant gadrooned decoration around the rim, on the handles, and on the lid. The removable handle is done in realistic branch form. The lid is engraved with a crest of an arm holding a cross with the Latin motto, Per Mare Per Terram above. This is the crest and motto of the Bosville family which translates By Land, By Sea. The interior of the dish is engraved with EEM 9-6-69 PTN. The engraving on the interior was added many ... moredecades after the crest on the exterior was first engraved. The Bosville crest on the exterior is the original engraving. The engraving on the interior almost certainly is for a marriage, the numbers in the center being the date of the marriage. There is also a second silver plate covered entrée dish that comes with this set. This is a wonderful old piece with a beaded rim. On either side a beautiful cartouche is engraved. On one side the cartouche remains vacant. On the other side a bird of prey is engraved with its wings spread. The interior of the lid is all marked with the makers initials IB. This piece is old Sheffield fused plate and was made in the late 1700s or early 1800s. This cover has no finial or handle for the lid. But these are usually not too difficult to find. You can often buy a silverplated dish that has problems but still has a good finial. The sterling silver stand is fully hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver. The leopards head crowned, the date letter F for 1801, the duty mark of King George IIIs head, and a makers mark of SH for Solomon Hougham. The salver measures 10 ¼ inches or 26 cm in diameter. And weighs 17.08 troy ounces or 530.2 grams. The salver has a beautiful scalloped edge with a high relief scrolling design. The center of the tray is engraved with a fine line design. The tray sits on scrolled feet with floral design. The back of the tray is marked with the standard British hallmarks; the leopard mark for London. The sterling standard mark of the lion, the date letter“E” for 1860, and the Queen Victoria I duty mark which was used from 1838-1890. 18th c 1790s FRENCH STERLiNG SiLVER PLATTER TRAY DISH w/ COAT of ARMS FAM CREST
HI! PLEASE READ the WHOLE AD& THANKS for L@KING. Please note only* 1* PIECE is listed here in the above GALLERY PHOTO. NOT BOTH. The smaller waiter's tray is listed in a sperate auction. Shown is a wonderful VERY RARE serving platter or tray that was made in FRANCE, marked with the sign of a boar's head. As early as 1796 and/ or up to 1819. The date hallmark is a bit hard to make out hence the date range. This measures about 13.75" long x 9.25" x 1.2" and its ABOUT 700 grams on our postal scale which IS NOT a JEWELER'S SCALE so give or take a few grams. The hallmark is a vertical mark with something on the top. Perhaps a letter or a symbol, below that is the letter O and then the letter A. There also a few marks on the right side but they are hard to make out. On the top side of this is the French discharge ... moremark which is an oval with a face on it. There are 3 letters F B D stamped on the underside rim. This is very thick& heavy. This is well over 22 troy ozs. This is too beautiful and rare to scrap or melt as this is a rare piece of fine handmade French Silver from the 18th Century. From the top the side slopes gently down towards the center. I believe the edge is Chippendale in style. There is a CREST/ COAT of ARMS in the center and its expertly engraved. We have not been able to identify this. Some suggested this might be a marriage piece as there might be 2 small crest in the middle. To briefly describe the crest on the top is a crown. On the left and right are dogs. Perhaps greyhounds, with collars looking to the left and right. In the center are 2 shields. The left side has another dog standing on two legs. The right side has a bird/ eagle standing under a double pyrmid. These are flanked by stars and a cresent moon at the point. If anybody knows any of these marks please let us know. Thanks. This will make a GREAT GIFT and its in EXCELLENT VINTAGE CONDITION and it still retains some of its mirror like surface. There are NO thin spots or worn areas and NO repairs we know of

The full description is below the following photos This is a lovely solid sterling silver twin handled olive dish with pierced decoration and standing on four stylish feet. It comes complete with its original blue glass liner. It is fully hallmarked for Chester 1929 with makers mark for Z. Barraclough and Sons. 5.25" x 3.2" and 1.5" high. Gross weight is 167.6g and silver weight 41g. Very good condition. Thereb are a couple of dinks and surface scratches to the liner. A highly sought after dish that would grace any table. Antique English Sterling Silver Sugar Swing Handle Basket Dish Bowl Chester
This is a lovely and very substantial Edwardian sterling silver sugar bowl made by Haseler Bros and clearly hallmarked for Chester 1902. It has the original blue liner which is in excellent condition and is cone shaped with a scalloped edge. The silver holder is also free from any damage or repair. Is conical in shape on a raised circular base. The silver body has an applied swags and tails decoration over a striped silver body. The swing handle is securely fixed to the substantial rim and in fact throughout the piece is made of a heavy gauge of silver. This is a quality Edwardian silver piece from these well known silversmiths.
