DISCUSSION: The first book published on the subject of American 17th century furniture. Like all Nutting books. Caution is required in figuring out where the good examples end and the restored or re-manufactured examples begin. This book was beset by controversy almost from the start, as within a year a broadside was circulated by an ironworker stating that he had made many of the examples of ironwork illustrated by Nutting. Still, as with other Nutting books, the sheer volume of furniture illustrated, as well as the important place these volumes have occupied in the literature for over three-quarters of a century, make them worth having.
