1900-04 Handwritten Diary Sarah Naumann Keyes Mt Vernon IA Berkley CA Lake Tahoe
You’ll have to bear with me because this description is going to be long; only way to really do this diary justice though. This incredible(and I don’t use that term lightly) handwritten diary originally belonged to a teacher by the name of Sarah“Sadie" M. Naumann Keyes. It is a five year diary starting off in 1900 when Sarah was 26 years old and living in Mt. Vernon Iowa. However in 1902 she marries her sweet heart. Charles Reuben Keyes and they move to California. I found some wonderful photos of the couple on the Iowa Heritage web site and copied them off to share here. Before I describe and quote from the diary itself you have to know just what an important figure her husband was and I quote… Keyes. Charles Reuben(May 5, 1871–July 23, 1951)educator, archaeologist, ornithologist, professor of German language and literature at Cornell ... moreCollege(1903-1941) And director of the Iowa Archaeological Survey(1922- 1951)has been called the founding father of Iowa archaeology. His personal surveys and work for the State Historical Society of Iowa resulted in the accumulation of more than 108.000 artifacts and a correspondingly large set of notes, photographs, maps, correspondence, manuscripts, and memorabilia now known as the Keyes Archaeological Collection. Shortly after Keyes's death, Smithsonian Institution archaeologist Waldo R. Wedel described the Keyes Collection as"the largest and most comprehensive extant assemblage of Iowa archaeological materials. Former State Archaeologist Marshall McKusick observed that the collection"contains numerous outstanding specimens of aesthetic and interpretive importance. Charles Keyes was a lifelong resident of Mount Vernon. Iowa. He attended Mount Vernon public schools and earned a B.A. from Cornell College in 1894. After a brief career as a teacher and administrator in the Norway and Blairstown public schools. Keyes enrolled in graduate school at Harvard University. Earning an M.A. in German in 1897. He completed a Ph.D. at Harvard in 1923. He had been appoin
1897-1899 Handwritten Journal Diary - Charles Edney, Salem Oh - Daily/200 pgs.
This journal was written by Charles Edney. A house and barn raiser and mover, who lived in Salem, Ohio. In 1896, he married his wife Linnie, and I can find no record of any children during the time this was written. He faithfully kept this journal. Writing daily, for three full years. The journal begins on Jan1, 1897 and ends on Dec 31,1899. It is a record of his daily work activities, and he often added personal notes about his private life. Mr Edney was a Civil War veteran, and quite active in the GAR. He mentioned a few times about applying for a pension and wrote of a General Gordon from the south giving a lecture at a meeting of the GAR. He and his wife were active in their church, and attended many local funerals. Some were quite sad- children, and a couple who drowned. There are also mentions of lawsuits and trials. Mr Edney was active ... morein his local community, and was once sworn in as a security officer at the local fair. He was very social and wrote of dinners etc with friends. Much of the journal is about his business of raising houses and barns. And moving structures. I was surprised at how many homes, churches and businesses he moved as well as the number of major structural alterations he made to others- especially interesting to anyone from the Salem area. There are also many full names mentioned throughout. Mr Edney also used the journal for accounting entries. The journal measures 12" x 7 1/2" and is in good condition. Daily entries. 200 handwritten pages. Buyer pays 4.00 S&H via Media Mail.
1921 Handwritten Diary Travels Buffalo NY Canada US West Coast Dr Albert Persons
This is an outstanding travel journal that takes one couple on a one month trip(possibly more as it stops while they are on the West coast) starting in Buffalo New York. Traveling all the way through Canada to the West Coast of the US and ending up in Portland Oregon. The diary dates 1921 and has 83 handwritten pages and 67 of those pages are journal entries. They had two children; Elizabeth(1882-1905) and Alberta(1885-1901) I found Dr. Persons fascinating obituary on the web and there is so much to this family including the fact that their two daughters died before them as you can see above. Also the fact that he had a personal assistant by the name of Jessie Secord(who was also shown ... moreas a member of their household) and after his wife died in 1943 he and Miss Secord moved to Cuba which is where Dr. Persons died. Now that’s a story in itself. Here is the entire obituary… Dr. Albert E. Persons for many years a Buffalo physician, and who had made his home in Cuba for the last two years, died early Saturday morning at Cuba Memorial Hospital. He would have been 93 years old on May 28. His death followed a fall two weeks earlier in which he suffered a fractured hip. Dr. Persons was well known in Buffalo. Where he practiced medicine for 63 years. He received his degree at New York University in 1881. And began his practice in Scio, and after a year or two in that, village, removed to Buffalo. He specialized in tuberculosis and throat diseases. From 1886 to 1893 he was a member of the medical faculty of Niagara University. Lecturing on hygiene and public health. Later he studied in Europe, in Vienna and other medical centers. In 1881 Dr. Persons married Lillian Hartshorn of Friendship. Who died two and half years ago. Two daughters, Alberta and Elizabeth. 1896 & 99 Handwritten Diary Hartford CT Molloy Schmelzer Mystery Intrigue Secret
The told and untold secrets that diaries hold. Always surprises me and even after reading them for over 25 years. I don’t think I’ve ever had diaries that intrigued me more than these two diaries. They represent the years 1896 and 1899. At first I thought the owner was Sydney H. Preston of London England as his name and address are in the front of the early diary. However after reading them I discovered that our author lived in Hartford County Connecticut. Near Savin Rock and Plainville and that Mr. Preston was actually his lawyer so perhaps our author lived in England at one time. There are a few clues as to once owned this diary beginning with our author celebrating his 57 th birthday on May 22 nd 1896 and his wedding anniversary on November 17 th. Then at one point in one of the diaries he says he passed a friend on the street and they ... morecalled him Mr. Molloy and yet another time he was referred to as William. So could these diaries belong to a William Molloy? Again. I don’t know for sure but whomever these diaries belong to, they live quite the interesting and mysterious life. For instance; he’s married to a woman by the name of Vinie or Vina(short for Vivian. She doesn’t seem like a very nice woman either because she beats his two sons. Deckie and Walter. I think she might be their step-mother. He seems to love her very much but in the 1899 diary she decides to leave him as they had an argument about her beating the children. That doesn’t last long because they do get back together several weeks later. Drinking is also a big part of their life, and so is something so secret that he has to tear some of the pages out of his 1899 journal so that they might not be read. There are actually about 10 pages torn out which represents about 20 days worth. On one of the pages opposite a torn out one it says(and in different writing I might add) I wish I might see these torn pages. If I had seen all this before. Oh my how it hurts. What a fool I am. So something’s been happening that he didn’t want anyone to kno
1869 Handwritten Diary Rather Illiterate Woman Boston "Gone Mad Stark Mad Crazy"
This charming little diary dates from 1869 and belongs to a very hardworking woman(girl) who lived in or around Boston. She is so faithful keeping her diary all the way up to July 7 th and then skips from July 7 th to July 17th. On July 18 th she starts writing again until August 13 th. After that there are 71 days of writing. So out of the 365 days represented. 285 days have full handwritten entries. She’s a bit illiterate but that only makes this diary more charming. I don’t know her name as she didn’t seem to write it anywhere in the diary. She’s also filled out the back pages of expenses and other miscellaneous notes. The diary is not in the best shape, the front cover has pulled away from the binding, the pages are foxed a bit and a few torn, so it really needs some archival care taken to it. It measures about 1 ½” x 4” 1869“January ... more13 th, Get up. Get breakfast. Eat. Emit came here, got horse. Finish C. hood. Set up Aunt’s scarf. Get supper, wash dishes. 13 Handwritten Diary Archive 20yr old Freda Breymaier Meyring Dayton Ohio 1920's
Here’s another group of diaries that have so much to them. Way too much for me to read and research right now. There are 13 diaries that span the time frame from May 16 th. 1923 to August 27 th. 1929. They are written by a 20 year old girl by the name of Freda Elnora Breymaier. She originally lived in Gibson, Mercer County Ohio but I think at the time the diaries are written she’s in Dayton and is a stenographer. And as with most 20 years olds. Boys seem to be the focus of her life. Again, I have not read these diaries but every time I would browse through them to find a page to scan her entries would be about dating, heartbreaks, social events, fights with her girlfriend’s lots of crying and so much more. I even saw that she takes a trip to Chicago and during the 1920’s that must have been quite the trip. Freda eventually marries a man by ... morethe name of Arthur W. Meyring who was an attorney. In all of the diaries I did see“Art” mentioned so I believe she starts dating him during this time along with other men. In fact she also mentions married men. Her father also dies in 1929. One rather disturbing entry(and it could mean many things) was this one… June 1. 1924…Played cards in the eve. On way back to Dayton Tubby acted so darn crazy. I was almost afraid. Said he just wanted to see if it was true that he had heard I was rotten and that I had killed a baby already in these two weeks. I was so sick at Nell’s. The big liars… You can see that her entries are not just simple entries. But deep detailed ones. Each diary has about 70 handwritten pages(counting front and back) which makes almost 850 pages of detailed writing. Each diary measures about 3 ½” x 6 ¾” and is in great shape. Really a fabulous un-researched group of a young woman in the roaring 20’s. And I want to add that at this buy it now price it only makes each diary about $20 a piece.
1945-46 Handwritten Diary WWII 20yr old Navy Man Guard for Japanese Prisoners
Well here’s something you don’t see every day. In fact I believe it’s very rare indeed. It’s a WWII handwritten diary kept by a young man(20 years old) by the name of Robert C. Johnson. What’s rare about this diary is that he was on board the USS LST-275 and while on board he was in charge of the Japanese prisoners of war of which he obtained 5 of their signatures or autographs. And those signatures are on the first page of this diary! And not only does he have their Japanese signatures but they’ve also written their name underneath. His entries are also amazing and there are a total of 46 handwritten pages detailing his time on the ship and in the various ports from December 5 th. 1945 to February 13 th. 1946. He’s most definitely a young man because his interest in women is what’s foremost on his mind including geisha girls. In fact. He ... moreexperiences a first on this trip and that’s giving his first girl a bath(I’ve scanned that page above) It’s a larger diary too measuring about 5” x 7 ¾” and on average there are 100 words per page so you get 4,000 words with this diary. Before I quote from the diary itself I want to give you a little background on the ship and most importantly the why the ship is picking up the prisoners… The USS LST-275 was laid down on April 22. 1943 at Ambridge. PA. By the American Bridge Co. launched on August 22 nd. 1943; sponsored by Mrs. J. N. Walker and commissioned on October 5 th. 1943. During World War II, LST-275 was assigned to the Atlantic-Pacific theatre and participated in the capture and occupation of Saipan in June and August 1944 and the Tinian capture and occupation in July and August 1944. Following the war. LST-275 performed occupation duty in the Far East until mid-February 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on the 16th of August 1946. Here’s the amazing part. Johnson and the crew were part of the transport team to transport the prisoners from the Featherston Prisoner of War Camp in New Zealand back to Japan. Two ships and their

Up for auction today is a 1929 handwritten diary originally belonging to George Howard Snyder Jr. Before I get to the diary itself. I found his obituary in a 1990 newspaper on the web, and I quote… G. Howard Snyder Jr. 82, retired president of a packaging firm and a former savings and loan executive, died Thursday in Rydal Park convalescent center. He lived in Rydal. Mr. Snyder was for many years the president of George H. Snyder Inc. A manufacturer of paper boxes for the tobacco and health-care industries. Mr. Snyder became president upon his father's death in 1942 and operated the company until he retired and the business was sold in 1970. Mr. Snyder was also a savings and loan executive. 2 Antique Handwritten Child's Diaries Diary 1869 & 1875
Both are in good condition. They are written by the same child at different ages. The 1869 book is harder to read than the 1875 book. The 1875 book basically just has daily entries about whether the day is pleasant or unpleasant. Talks about school lessons and helping mother.
AMAZING 1911 White Star Line Handwritten Diary Titanic Era SS Celtic + Ephemera
This is a fabulous Titanic era diary written by 23 year old Marion Gertrude Thorn who sailed to Europe in the summer of 1911. Only 9 months before the Titanic sunk. The diary is full of incredible handwritten entries plus bits and pieces of ephemera from her trip. There are a total of 64 pages of entries and 13 pages of ephemera. Four of the pages in the back have handwritten autographs or signatures of the people who went with her or of the people she met. She sails on board the S. S. Pennsylvania on the way to Europe and then on the way home on board the“Celtic” which is a White Star Line ship. Mary was born on April 10 th. 1888 and was the daughter of William Wallace and Mary C. Davis) Thorn. She lived in St. Clair Pennsylvania. Probably the saddest thing is that Marian died in 1926 when only 38 years old. There are so many noteworthy ... moreentries too. One that really tugged at my heart was when she talked about landing in Germany at the docks and when they did the ships band played farewell music while on deck. It reminded me so much of the band on the deck of the Titanic. Then when she’s in Berlin she meets the niece of General Sheridan. Same General Sheridan of Civil War fame? Not sure but most likely. Plus at the end of the trip their passage back is delayed because of the steamship strike. In the beginning of the diary she talks about leaving Broad St. Station in Philadelphia and arriving in New York at the Hotel Bristol. It’s there she met her guide for the trip a Professor Woodbury. They leave the hotel the next day and are taken to Hoboken Pier… 1911“July 8 th. Arose at 5 A.M. Went out to a restaurant for breakfast. Left the hotel at 7 o’clock and rode in the subway for Hoboken Pier. We boarded the S. S. Pennsylvania” Hamburg American Line and sailed at 9 o’clock. Bands blowing and every one excited. A party of Bakers on their way to a convention caused much amusement. They had beautiful flowers which gave the dining room the appearance of a conservatory. We spent the day walking around the de
1978 HANDWRITTEN DIARY VERY OPINIONATED NOSEY OUTSPOKEN LADY FROM JACKSON MICH
This is the 1978 diary of Doris Burgess who lived in Jackson Michigan. She is an older lady who lives alone in an apartment house with other ladies around her same age.To say that Doris is nosey is putting it mildly! She knows every move her neighbors make.Even the ones that live across the street and around her building. She is very opinionated, and sometimes just down right mean. She refers to her neighbors as Mrs.J,and Mrs.M,etc.She thinks Mrs.J is nuts,in fact she thinks all of the ladies in the place are nuts.Very rarely,if ever does she ever have anything nice to say.She has a friend named Marge that calls her all the time, that she says talks non stop about nothing, and is an awful bore.Mrs.J calls her all the time too,and she will often take her phone off the hook so she cant, and will ignore her if she knocks on the door. She also comes over ... morewhen Doris is watching the news, or eating, and it really makes her disgusted, one time she said she just sat there and ate right in front of her. When she finds out Mrs.J's car was sideswiped while parked on the street,Doris says,Oh yeah! She talks about the people across the street, calling them, the mexicans"saying how they got drunk and loud, that the police came,or whatever. She knew the exact time it happened, and what happened,by watching out of her window.Im telling you,Doris is really something else!I guess the best way to describe her is to give you some examples of her entries. 1938 Handwritten Diary 20yr old girl Lincoln Nebraska Great Depression Theatre
This is such a perfect example of how the great depression affected a 20 year old girl living in Lincoln Nebraska during the year 1938. I don’t know her name and she didn’t write the exact town she lives in but she mentions going to Johnson. Omaha and Tecumseh on numerous occasions. Then she also talked about going to Hayward Park and sure enough there is a Hayward Park in Lincoln Nebraska. The family was in such dire straits financially that they almost loose their place of residence and get their utilities shut off on numerous occasions. In fact our young author. Who works for the telephone Company, ends up paying for some of the bills to get the utilities turned back on. She lives paycheck by paycheck only having 18 cents in her pocket at times. One thing that the depression didn’t affect was her love for the movies. In fact she goes to ... morethe movies it seems at least once or twice a week(and more) and the reason I mention this is because she also loves critiquing them and has her own 5 star rating system. Such a great diary that’s almost completely full of handwritten entries. There is one for every day of the year except January 1 st through the 12 th when she begins her entries. And such great historical significant entries too as you will see in the following excerpts… 1938“January 12 th, Went to show with Amy. They Won’t Forget, a very dramatic picture. Claude Rains, Edward Norris and some new actors. ½(I don’t have stars on my computer so am using the asterisk sign but she draws stars) Very convincing. Almost too much so. I hope Marian sees it. January 20 th, Gosh wish I could get another job. I’ll never be a good operator. I don’t want Lillian to feel that I should keep the job just because we used to be neighbors. February 2 nd, Saw“Wells Fargo” with Joel McCrea. Frances Dee, Bob Burns. A very good picture. I certainly enjoyed it. It was long but always interesting. It had everything, drama, thrills, laughs, tears, villains and a couple wars for good measures. The cartoon was cu
WWI Scrapbook Handwritten Typed Diary Photos Capt Sullivan Durham NH France RARE
This is an exceptional WWI Captain’s scrapbook and diary that is full of some amazing pieces of ephemera and all of it has to do with his time spent in the service. His name was Lynde Sullivan and the amazing part of all of this is that he was in his early 50’s when he left for France in WWI. He was born on October 4 th. 1865, the son of John Langdon Sullivan and Helen Lynde. He graduated from Harvard in 1888 and married Katherine Torrey Baldwin in 1898. He had a son by the name of John Langdon who was born in 1903. He was commissioned out on July 20 th. 1917. I found the following excerpt taken from“The Harvard Graduates’ Magazine, Volume 28. 1919-1920” Lynde Sullivan has been discharged from active service. He was a Captain in the Quartermaster’s Department at first and acted as Division Supply Officer at one of the cantonments in the South. ... moreHe was later sent to France in charge of the detachment of special service men and after serving there in various capacities was finally assigned to the Intelligence Division. His present address is Durham. New Hampshire. Again. This scrapbook has so many incredible things inside including a few handwritten and typed diary entries. The scrapbook itself has 400 pages of which 91 of those were used up by Lynde. Some of the pieces of ephemera is glued in(but usually just on the corners) and some is loose. I counted 220+ pieces of ephemera, some of which are even titled, Confidential. There are photos. Certificates of identity, handwritten notes, service of supply papers, postcards, train tickets, supply lists, passes, intelligence reports, bread tickets, telegrams, letters, deserter reports, criminal investigation papers, battle information, orders, and a lot more. There are also quite a few notes or documents that state that Capt. Sullivan has permission to“enter any of the places that are“off limits” at any time in line of duty. So he must have been quite high up. Because there is so much to this scrapbook I didn’t even check any of the autographs or signature
1939-40 Handwritten Diary Involved in Murder? Gun in Bag Court Sessions Mitzie
This is such an interesting diary that really deserves further study because the entries hold some kind of secret(until solved) that possibly has to do with a murder. I couldn’t find a name or a date but there are several clues inside that will aid you in your research. Probably the most intriguing part is the loose handwritten note I found between the pages and I quote… If you can read this book. It has been said that it’s about a woman who is involved with a murder. I had a terrible time trying to read it. The paper the note was written on is vintage paper too. Or at least it seems that way. I could read most of the diary but there were a few words here and there that were tough to make out. I believe the date of this diary is from December 11 th(1939) through to June 14 th. 1940) The reason I believe it’s these years is because at one ... moretime she writes, Sunday December 17 th and then February was leap year. Sure enough in 1939 December 17 th was a Sunday and in 1940 there was a February 29 th. Then she also talks about her taxes on a particular house and the tax dates were from the later part of the 1930’s. The diary actually starts off with her being in court and the talk of a gun in her purse. I think she has a lawyer by the name of Solit or Jolit. Not sure which. Not even sure if he’s her lawyer but he is involved in the case. She also has a daughter named Mitzie and perhaps an ex by the name of Max. Max is not a good man either because Mitzie comes home on two different occasions with a torn coat and supposedly it was done by Max. As far as the location she does mentions a house address(not sure if it’s her house though) and that address is 2649 Stanley Street. When I went to look that address up I found it located in Indianapolis. The 1940 census shows a Freda and Ernest Foernzler living there at that time. Again. These are only assumptions. I don’t have time to thoroughly read or research this diary but it would be a fun project. I did take a few excerpts for you to get a better idea of what I’

1898 & 1916-19 WWI Era Handwritten Diary Scrapbook Bindley Gen Asa Bird Gardiner
This is the scrapbook/diary of the Bindley family of Mayville New York and also Pennsylvania. It was written by Sara L. Bindley and it’s not a daily diary but more of a journal where Sara would record the family’s noteworthy events and precious memories of her children. There are also some incredible photos inside and other pieces of ephemera. She begins the journal on June 23 rd. 1898 and ends on June 1 st. 1919. However most of the entries are from 1916-1919 as there is a 17 year gap from 1898 to 1916. Before I describe the journal any further and quote from it I want to tell you a little more about the Bindley family. Sara Lida(Slocum) was married to Albion Bindley who I might add was 9 years younger than Sara. They married in the 1880’s and had two children; Albion Bindley Jr. and Almira M. Bindley. The strange thing is that I found the ... morefamily on the 1900 census but on the 1905 census it only lists Sara and her two children and she’s listed as single and not widowed. Albion Jr. married Genevieve and they had three children; Genevieve C. Albion and Elizabeth S. However I did finally find out that Albion Sr. died in 1904. Most if not all of the Bindley family are buried in the Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburg. The thing that stuck out to me concerning her life after her husband died is that they moved around quite a bit. Sometimes hotels, some times boarding houses, sometimes staying with family. During this time she is with her granddaughter Sara Virginia and they have an incredible bond. Perhaps the most historical thing concerning this diary is that in 1917 while traveling on board the train she meets General Asa Bird Gardiner. I had no idea who he was or how controversial his life was until I looked him up… Asa Bird Gardiner(September 30. 1839– May 24, 1919) was a controversial American soldier, attorney, and district attorney for New York County(a.k.a. the Borough of Manhattan) from 1898 to 1900. He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the American Civil War in 1872 but it was rescind
Antique 1900 Handwritten Journal DIARY Full Bloomsburg University G.E. Elwell PA
Elwell family that has building on campus of Bloomsburg University named after* This is an antique handwritten diary from 1900. It was G. Edward Elwell from Bloomsburg. Pennsylvania. Lists Geo. E. Elwell as person to contact in case of accident or serious illness. Sounds like he was a child of maybe 10 or 11. Listed as 4' 11" and 74 lbs. Diary has an entry for every day in 1900. Also includes memoranda with recipes, list of Christmas presents and other info. It lists Christmas presents from 1899, so I am guessing this may have been a present as well. Also has cash account info with cash on hand and monies spent on various items such as soda water, fudge, hot soda, postage, etc. Upon some research I think this may be the diary of the youngest of the Elwell family in which Bloomsburg University has a building(Elwell Hall) named after. ... moreOn the Bloomsburg University page I found this: Elwell Residence Hall. Completed in 1968, is a nine-story facility that houses 700 men and women. The 149,578-square-foot building is named for three generations of the Elwell family, the younger two of whom graduated from Bloomsburg and later returned to teach. Judge William Elwell served as trustee from 1868 to 1887 and president of the governing board for several years. His son, George E. Elwell, was one of the first graduates of the institution and succeeded his father on the Council of Trustees in 1887, continuing until 1906. George's son, G. Edward Elwell, taught foreign languages at Bloomsburg" Is this the youngest Elwell's diary from 1900? One entry is as follows: Monday April 2. 1900. 50 degrees weather: C. Cl, R(there is a list in the back in the memoranda of weather abbreviations) Got up at 8:30. Went up street. Came home and mixed juice for water ice. S. came. Went up town. Played ball. Made fudge. Played chess. Went to ice plant. S came. Miss Wallace spent the afternoon. Mamma went to Uncle Charlie's funeral. Studied all evening. I believe it is leather bound. it measures approx. 4 7/8" x 3 1/8
1906-07 Handwritten Diary Jennie Whitcomb Millington MI Pontiac Asylum Visit
I am always amazed to find what’s written between the pages of vintage diaries and no matter how many I read I occasionally come across diaries. Such as this one, that have entries that rather shock me. Before I get to that particular entry, I want to tell you a little bit about our author. Her name is Jennie Whitcomb of Millington Michigan. I was actually rather lucky too to find her name because I didn’t see it written anywhere in the journal but because I was outside at the time while studying this one the sun hit it just right and sure enough on the inside front cover in pencil. Her name and town was written. You can only see it if you hold it a certain way. Jennie is 26 years old when the diary commences on September 21 st 1906. There are 105 handwritten pages and 80 of those pages are personal diary type entries. The rest are miscellaneous ... morenotes such as address’s. Poems, expenses, music and more. I found Jennie on a few of the census records and it looks like she eventually married William Owens. She was born on May 29 th. 1880 and was the daughter of Ephraim and Esther Whitcomb. This diary is full of great entries especially if you are interested in this area of Michigan. In fact it starts out with Jennie taking a trip to Highland and staying with her Aunts and Uncles. She stays there for quite some time and her descriptions of the place and the surrounding towns are fabulous. From there she takes a trip to Pontiac Michigan and its there she gets a full tour of the asylum and that description is amazing. I believe it’s the Clinton Valley Center which was originally called the Eastern Michigan Asylum for the insane. It was a psychiatric hospital located at 140 Elizabeth Lake Road in Pontiac. It opened up in 1873 to alleviate the overcrowding at the Kalamazoo psychiatric hospital. Both the campus size and number of patients slowly grew as the hospital was repeatedly enlarged between 1882-1895 with more additions in 1906. 1914 and 1938. In 1911, the hospital changed its name to Pontiac State Hospital. H

1945 Handwritten Diary Young Teacher Husband Air Force Divorce Lincoln Park MI
Up for auction today is a handwritten WWII era diary representing the year 1945. It was written by 23 year old Marian Eaton of Jackson or Wayne County Michigan. I know at least that she lives in Michigan as she mentions the towns of Parma. Sandstone, Detroit. Jackson. Lincoln Park and Lyon Lake. She is a young married school teacher whose husband(Wyley) is in the service(Air force) and has been gone over a year. Wyley and Marian have only been married for 2 years. In the beginning of the diary she talks about getting wonderful letters from him and missing him terribly but then in September he writes her a letter after 22 days of no writing and tells her he wants to marry someone else. She refuses and pretty soon he seems to come back around to her and their marriage seems saved. However when I went to look the couple up on the web I saw that ... morethey had divorced in 1969. I also found out that Wyley was a researcher and chemist. I think I might have found his service record too. And I quote… Col(USAF. Ret) WYLEY E. EATON(1922- 2014) Wyley E. Eaton was born 22 Dec 1922 in Davis. MI. He graduated with USAAF class 44-C at Marfa Army Airfield, TX; and served during WWII in the European Theater. He continued his service in the Korean Conflict, and at Selfridge AFB, MI. His career included pilot duties in the UC-78, B-29, B-50, and the C-45/46/47 aircraft. He separated from the Air Force in 1946, but soon returned as a qualified MD, a role he served until retiring in 1982. Colonel Eaton leaves behind his wife, Beverly, and two daughters” So it looks like he remarried. The diary really gives the ready a good look at life for a young military wife during WWII. In fact at one point he even sends her some silk material from an old parachute which she makes a blouse out of. As far as her teaching goes. She’s a 4 th grade teacher and has some pretty unruly kids. Has lots of trouble with them kissing each other. The other thing I noticed is that she seems to be very tired all the time and more than the usual fatigue
1928 Handwritten Diary Journal Greeley Colorado Lingle Wyoming High School Girl
This is a 1928“Wanamaker” diary that originally belonged to a young woman who lived in Lingle Wyoming for the first half of this diary and then in September the family moves to Greeley Colorado. Her name is written in the back of the diary and I’ve scanned a close up of it as I can’t quite make out her last name. Her first name is Elizabeth and her middle name starts with a S. Her birthday is on June 6 th. Her mother’s birthday is on August 16 th. And her father’s birthday is on October 5 th. I’m sure there are other clues as to who she is throughout the diary. I can tell you that she plays the fiddle. Is in the school orchestra, attends quite a few high school sporting events, quilts, paints and much more. Wanamaker diaries are great reference pieces too because the first 160 pages have wonderful ad’s and“useful information” as do the last ... more138 pages. Here are a few examples of her entries… 1928“January 14 th, Have been alone all day so it seems. Mr. Nash and father went away this morning. Father came home and got ready to go to Hillsdale and Hospital. Mother and I were alone this afternoon. The windmill is out of order and we have to pump. Read all evening. 1888 Handwritten Diary VERY Sick Woman Brights Disease Cattaraugus NY Vineland
This is the 1888 handwritten diary of a very sick woman. So sick she can’t stand up at times. It also makes her very depressed as you can see on her June 4 th entry… Cool and very pleasant. Spencer planting corn. I fell wretched and lonely shut out from all society and live in a hollow where I can’t see or hear anything. I was so amazed too that she could even keep a diary and she was faithful doing so all the way up until August 22 nd where she seems at deaths door but she picks up her diary writing on October 15 th and keeps it for the rest of the year. At one point in April her writing changes a little and on April 24 th(see the scan above) she writes. Cool and pleasant. I cannot write. She skips just two days and picks right back up writing. I know I keep saying it but I just can’t imagine writing being as sick as she is but then again ... morewith some diarist. The need to write is greater than anything. It was a tough diary to read too and not because of her hand writing but because of her sickness. Tugged at the heartstrings. I don’t know her name but she lived in Cattaraugus County New York as she mentions the towns of Randolph. East Town. Conewango and Rutledge. However in the beginning of the diary she seems to be in Jamestown New York staying with friends. A doctor I think, who is trying to take care of her. She mentions the towns of Sugar Grove, Warren and Farmington also. I’ve taken several entries and shared them here to give you a better idea of the contents… 1888“January 8 th& 9 th, Freezing cold. Snow most gone. The roads are very icy. Mr. Bradway and wife spent the eve with us at Dr. We had music and a good time…Stinging cold. I am still with the Dr.s family. They are real good folks. They urge my stay here till I am better. Music by the Woodard Band. Grand and enspiring. February 2 nd& 3 rd. War and very pleasant. I feel a little better. Am knitting for myself. What means such deep drawn sighs that comes unbidden so often from myself…Mild and pleasant. Mr. and Mrs. B. and I went to

1893-95 Handwritten Diary Nolan Cox Family Mahopac Lake Brewster NY Teacher 192p
As I read this diary I found myself saying. Please don’t let anything more happen to this precious family. Some of the entries are so heart wrenching, especially in the beginning, and yet in spite of it all they still go on and in such a brave and admirable way. This is the diary of Michael Nolan. Although I couldn’t find his name written in the diary. I was able to discover who he was by many of the clues written throughout. His wife’s name is Mary and she’s pregnant when this diary begins. The couple has two little daughters, babies I should say, named Lizzie and Maggie, perhaps an older son too) He’s a school teacher and lives in Lake Mahopac New York. I found a book on the web titled. An Historical Sketch of the State Normal College at Albany New York. 1894. In this book it said, and I quote… Michael Nolan. Taught 2 years before entrance ... moreinto the State Normal College at Albany New York; 1 term during course; since grad. 7 ½ years. He taught at the following schools: Dykeman’s 1 ½ years. In Tilly Foster; 1 year Mahopac Mines; now principal at Lake Mahopac. All Putnam Co. N.Y. Married in 1891 Mary Cox; 1 son. 1 daughter. The diary begins on February 22 nd. 1893 and ends on June 18 th. 1895. Then the ledger and expense section begins. All in all there are a total of 192 handwritten pages and 107 of those are devoted to his diary entries. The toughest part to read was in February of 1893 their little girl Mary Elizabeth(Lizzie) died. It’s a long detailed entry about her death and also about the family carrying their sweet precious child in the carriage to Little Falls where she will be buried. Because the casket is so small they are able to carry it on their lap all the way there. How extremely sad is that. Then if that wasn’t enough Mary gives birth to a baby boy. Phillip Nolan, that same year but he only lasts hours. Baby Maggie gets sick too but she pulls through. Michael also gets very sick in 1894 and is hospitalized and thankfully he pulls through. It’s really a fantastic diary showing just
1941-1945 Handwritten Diary Journal Widow Susan Eckler Thompson Middlefield NY
Up for auction today is a five year diary representing the years 1941-1945. It originally belonged to a widow by the names of Susan V. Eckler) Thompson of Middlefield New York. Susan was born on March 19 th. 1867 and died on March 21 st. 1952. I have not read this diary only browsed through it to gather a few pages to scan. I can tell you that the diary has full entries for every day of each year. I found Susan’s husband on the Find a Grave web site. Seems he died in 1930. 11 years before the first entry in this diary. Here is his obituary… Ellery Pratt Thompson. A highly respected citizen of Middlefield, was called to rest on Friday, October 31st. Mr. Thompson had been ill for nearly two years, but had been able to be about the farm until within a few days of his death. Mr. Thompson was sixty-two years of age and was born in Middlefield ... moreon August 4, 1868, the son of Philip Thompson and Levantia Cummings. All of his life has been spent in Middlefield, where he was well liked by all; and his passing leaves a vacant spot that can be filled by none other. Burial was made in the Middlefield cemetery. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife and daughter, Mrs. B. F. Slater, of Middlefield, and by one brother, S. G. Thompson, of Middlefield. I did go through this diary and write down a few of the many names of the folks living in Middlefield at the time…Fisher. Flora Parshall, McKillip, Pollett, Hearn, Reynolds, Carrie Van Hozen, Albert Gates, McNeer, Ester Wilson, Dr. Cruttenden, May North, Edith Webster, Lena Eckler, Addie Tabor, Daisy Snyder, Lee, Knox and many more. The diary measures about 4” x 5 ½” and other than the metal clasp being loose(but accounted for) and the closure tab being quite warn. The diary is in good shape.

1864 Handwritten Civil War Era Diary Albany Co NY Trip West to St Louis Omaha NE
This is such a rare diary. Out of the 25 years of collecting handwritten diaries and having read over 6.000 of them, I’ve only come across about 5(that I can remember) which were anything like this. The diary represents the incredible year of 1864, Civil War year of course. and every day has a full handwritten entry. I don’t know our authors name but there are several clues in this diary which will help in your research to find him. I believe our author is a young man. Possibly in his 20’s or 30’s. Not sure why he’s not fighting in the Civil War, although he does say he’s escaped the draft, but he sure gets his share of excitement living and traveling during these tumultuous times. He lives in Albany County New York or at least I think he does(which I’ll get to in a minute) and in the winter sells his farm and heads West going as far as Omaha ... moreNebraska. However he spends most of that time in St. Louis Missouri selling rat poison boxes to the local businesses and working in a saloon. It’s really a fascinating read. Let’s start from the beginning. The town that is mentioned most in this diary(while he’s in New York) is Amity. However he also mentions Green Island and is close enough to Troy to skate to it during the winter. In my researches I saw that the town of Amity is in another county then Green Island and Troy but I did see that there was an Amity Street in the town of Cohoes which is also in Albany County. So for all of you who know this area well. Was there once a little village of Amity nearby? In the beginning of this diary he sells his farm to a man with the last name of Flansburgh whom I found out was one of the biggest pioneer families in Albany County. Garret Flansburgh come to the area in the late 1700’s and owned a farm in Albany County. In fact I found photo on the web(dated 1911) showing the Garret Flansburgh Farm in Berne. Albany County New York. Is this the farm that use to belong to our author? I’ve included a scanned copy of the photo here just in case. So I think if you researched a
1922 Handwritten Travel Diary Journal - Wealthy Woman's 3 mo Tour of Europe
The author of this diary was Elizabeth(Betsy) Clifford of Duluth MN. She was 25 years old when she made the trip to Europe which she wrote about in this diary. Ms Clifford was from a wealthy family. Which is evidenced by the expensive hotels they stayed at, and the manner in which they traveled. The 1920 Census lists the author's residence as Los Angeles, Ca, although at the end of the trip she returned to Duluth. I have been unable to find out what the young woman did while in LA, but in the diary she lists several names under the heading"Hollywood Friends" She also wrote of a few people she ran into on the trip who worked at MGM or lived in Hollywood. Accompanied by her mother. Ms Clifford left Duluth on July 5, 1922 and traveled by train to Chicago. From there she and her mother traveled to Quebec where on July 11, they boarded ... morethe Empress of France for Europe. During the 7 day crossing, the author became involved with a young man, the first of many suitors and young men on this trip that she wrote about in the diary. During the next 3 months. Ms Clifford described in her diary the many sights she saw in England, Scotland, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Italy. She described the damage from the war in Belgium, and also wrote of the war in France: We drove through Verdun(a mass of ruins) Verdun Fort- then to Fort deVaux- went through it. Maj Renwald defended the fort for 3 days. Then finally surrendered to the Germans- carrier pigeons- 19 men went for water. Three returned. visited Ossuaire, built by the American Red Cross- the most touching scene of all. Even the eyes of the priest were filled with tears. Ms Clifford loved Paris and had quite the time there. Sightseeing, shopping and fashion shows, the nightlife and dancing. She and her mother went to the Folies Bergere, which her mother"didn't quite enjoy- too nude, no tops" The author also paid a visit to the famous"Dead Rat" nightclub. Of all the countries she visited, the author seemed to like Italy the least
1881 HANDWRITTEN DIARY SHAPPEE ELMIRA NY MURDERS!HANGINGS!HISTORY!AWESOME FULL!
This is the incredible 1881 diary of Jacob V. Shappee who lived in Elmira New York.I say its incredible because it truely is!Jacob lived with his wife Fannie. And a man named George, who either worked for them,or lived with them,or possibly both.In the 1900 census it shows Jacob, and Fannie, having a daughter, who was 10 years old. Jacob and Fannie were married for 34 years in 1900! Jacob was 41 years old,and Fannie was 30, when he wrote this diary.Jacob worked in a tannery and kept up with all of the latest news, and let me tell ya,there was alot of it!Along with all of the other news, this was the year that President Garfield was assassinated, sending the United States into a period of worry, and mourning.Jacob was quite devoted to Fannie, often mentioning her being sick, getting the Dr.for her,and after working all day himself, going home and doing ... morethe housework. In fact he sometimes did the housework,or helped Fannie even when she wasnt sick.He was always reading the latest news, and reporting what he heard around town.He talked about the weather, the money he made, and spent, and the happenings at work, friends, relatives, and visitors, like most diaries do,but Jacob's diary is packed full of murders, trials, suicides, embezzeling, fires, highway robbery.Arrests, terrible accidents,a lady's hired man running away with her 12 year old daughter, and marrying her,and lots of sickness. He even tells the story about the brutality of a father who nails his sons tongue to a wall! This is an amazing diary, and one of the best I have ever read!He writes about cattle diseases breaking out,a man being gored to death by a bull,a young man being sawed into, and much, much more! This is an awesome diary that is absolutely full of entries for everyday of the year and then some!At times, Jacob's handwriting is a bit of a challenge to read.I noticed that the more I read though, I grew more accustomed to it,and it became much easier. The diary is in fair condition, but actually alot better condition than you might expect with a book this old.The
1921 HANDWRITTEN DIARY STANLEY HENDERSON WARD HILL MASS/WESTINGHOUSE ELEC & MFG
This is the 1921 diary of Stanley D.Henderson.From Ward Hill Mass.He works at the Westinghouse Electric& Mfg.Co,in Essington Pa. and also goes to school there. That is where he is mostly living while writing this diary, except when he has to go other places for work, or when he gets a chance to go home and visit his family, and his beloved Elsie! What stands out about this diary to me,is he is in love with Elsie, who's picture by the way,is attached to the inside of one of the first pages, and the way he talks about her, always saying things like, she sure is the kid"and calls her,the old girl"These are said in a very endearing way,and he definately knows she is the one,and she was too, because in some census information I have on Stanley,it turns out he married Elsie, and they had three children together! He was about 21 yrs.old ... morewhen this diary was written, and was quite a well educated man, having had 4 years of college, and becoming a mechanical engineer later on.He writes about going to school, and work, going out with his friends, ice skating,to shows, and church, going to Atlantic City, and playing poker. He has a female friend named Flo that he sees and talks about a bit,but she must have just been a friend,or since she was there in Essington, perhaps Elsie wasnt the only"one"I dont know, but he does mention seeing her,and having a good time.He talks about a fire in the slaughter house, going to ball games, the carnival, and the movies, and much more! He was quite a busy young man,and this is an interesting read! The diary is full up until Sept.19th when he suddenly stops writing. There are a some names and addresses, and some accounting information on a few of the back pages. The diary measures about 5" X 3"and is in good condition, with no issues,or odors that I can detect. His handwriting is also easy to read.I will send along the census information that I have on Stanley, for the years 1920,and 1940,with the diary. This is a nice look back in time at the life of one young man,and knowing he had
1923-26 Handwritten Diary 21yr old Newlywed Teacher Jefferson City Columbia MO
I don’t know the name of the young woman who wrote this diary but there are a few clues inside to help you with your research. I can tell you she was 21 years old when she began her diary on August 26 th. 1923. Now this diary covers several years because she writes an entry every day until May 8 th. 1926 and then after that there are sporadic entries to finish out the year of 1926 and a few entries for 1927. She’s a teacher and lives in either Boone or Cole County Missouri as she mentions the towns of Jefferson City. Columbia and Ashland. As the diary opens up she is dating a young man by the name of Stanley and a few years later in 1925 they marry… December 26 th. 1925. I got up about 7 and dressed for my wedding. Mr. Abram came about 9:30 and brought the flowers. We waited on Mandis and Weldon’s ½ hour then begin the ceremony at 10:30. ... moreEverything was beautiful. We stayed for lunch. Emma and Crawford brought us to Centralia to the train and now we are in Kansas City. December 27 th. 1925. We went to the Main St. Theatre to the show last nite. We got back about 12 and went to bed about 12:30. It didn’t seem quite right to go to bed with Stanley. We got up about 11. Ate dinner and walked around then came back to our room. After each month during the 3-4 years of writing there is a memoranda section and she also adds handwritten notes to that stating all of the important and interesting events that happened during the previous month. As I browsed through the diary to gather some example pages. I found a very very sad entry about a young man who was shot and it reads like this… October 5 th. 1926. We went down home tonight. The sick were some better. Mervin came tonight. He started home about 10. Got stuck by Elmer Shyrock’s, went there for help. Elmer shot him and he died about 30 minutes later. October 6 th. 1926. When Stanley came for me this he sure brought terrible news. He told me about the terrible tragedy about Mervin. We went to Mr. Crawford. Poor dear Emma. They brought Mervin home at
1876 HANDWRITTEN DIARY Country Boy Kills Skunks, Writes Love Poetry SANDUSKY NY
Saturday. January 1, 1876: Found me at Mr. Chamberlane's at Centerville. Worked in the forenoon. Went a-hunting in the afternoon and kiled a skunk. Sold it for 50 cts to S. Mores. Talked with him about Mother's place. Millard went to George James' wedding. Came home at 10 o'clock. And thus began the year 1876 for Morris Franklin Evans of Sandusky. NY. Morris Evans was born September 9th, 1851, in Herkimer County, NY, making him 24/25 here. His parents were Welsh immigrants who had seven other children. Morris writes about his days of farming life. In which he did a good job" dragging" harrowing] and" sowing" all day long. He seems very devout as he goes to" meeting" fairly often. He seems to enjoy numbers as he breaks off frequently into writing statistics current for that decade(the population ... moreof people in the US at that time. The number of words in the New Testament, birth dates for people in their town) In contrast to the simplicity of his rustic life. He seems to be quite the dreamer; among all his doodlings of his name and sales calculations, he writes out many love poems-some commonly known at the time, some his own original compositions. Some feminine handwriting makes an appearance in the Memoranda section at the end of the diary. Handwritten Diary Victor King Plainfield NJ Goes 2 Boy Scout World Jamboree 1924
There is so much to this diary and not just the amount of writing but the contents and the provenance. Which I’ll start with the latter. The diary belonged to Victor R. Kind of Plainfield N. J. He was the son of Victor Louis King who was a chemist and worked for the firm of Calco Chemical Company, later part of American Cyanamid Company. Possibly the most incredible thing about Victor Sr. was that he attended the University of Zurich in the early 1900’s and was a student of Albert Einstein’s! He died in 1958. His son. And the author of this diary, was a very prominent lawyer as you will see in his obituary… Victor R. King. Of Plainfield. N.J. Died April 18, 2003. He practiced law in Newark. Plainfield and North Plainfield until his retirement in 2000 at the age of 91. He was a trustee of the New Jersey Bar Association and president of the ... morePlainfield and Union County bar associations. A charter member of the Union County Ethics Committee. He was also on the New Jersey Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on Professional Ethics. He was a Union County park commissioner. An attorney for the Plainfield Board of Education, a trustee of the Fanwood Community Foundation and a longtime member of the Plainfield Shakespeare Society. He served with distinction in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a combat information officer on the USS Gyatt. I found an amazing web site that has so many incredible photos showing the King’s involvement along with historical ephemera and much more and all of it has to do with the history of the Plainfield Garden Club which they were long time members and extremely active in it. I can provide that to the winning bidder if they would like. But really all you have to do to find it on the web is to put in“Plainfield Garden Club King” and you’ll come up with the web sites. Now as far as this diary is concerned; it is completely full of handwritten entries and those entries represent the time frame from 1924-1928. It’s not the typical 5 year type diary that one would buy but really a page a day d

CIRCA 1921 HANDWRITTEN DIARY 40 PAGES U.S. NAVY OFFICER CHINA HONG KONG RARE
Up for auction is a rare handwritten diary from a U.S. navy officer stationed on the U.S. S. Huron in 1921. The Huron was designated CA-9 on 17 July 1920. She served in the Asiatic Fleet for the next seven years. Operating in Philippine waters during the winter and out of Shanghai and Chefoo, China during the summer. Capt. C. D. Stearns was in command of the Huron on 1 July 1923 during her duty with the Asiatic Fleet. I believe the author’s name was Livingston. He was the engineering officer. And writes some fascinating, and forthright observations. The Huron was in Chefoo and Peking China, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Yokohama Japan. Livingstone than transfers to the U.S.S Alden and sails to Panama, Chile, Galapagos Islands, and Peru. The entries are shorter in length, one and two lines of text with some interesting info nevertheless. ... moreFor example the Alden hit a underwater escarpment and sustained damage he also writes about war games in Panama with the early use of seaplanes. The diary has 40 handwritten pages with writing on both sides of the page. Twenty pages contain detailed entries about China. Japan, Guam, Panama and Chile. An additional 20 pages scattered throughout the diary contain information( the remainder of pages are blank) expenses. Lists of ships he was assigned to, ships that were decommissioned also mentions assignment to build gunboats, accounts, money spent on uniforms, list's of individuals invited to his wedding, notations about receiving a Masters Degree from Columbia University ect ect. The most interesting observations are those written about China. These are written in short paragraphs on the first 15 pages. For example Livingstone notes a group of Chinese Acrobats that preformed onboard the Huron he briefly discusses Funeral Rites women with bound feet the level of poverty in rural china and his impressions of the British navel base in Hong Kong. In order to get a better impression of his writing I will include some of the more interesting entries. He has a matter of fact style o
INCREDIBLE 1914 HANDWRITTEN DIARY - American Woman Trapped In Europe During WW1
1914 HANDWRITTEN DIARY- Sometimes. I open a diary and I am simply blown away by the contents. and this is one of those incredible finds! Mere words cannot express what a rare& extraordinary diary this truly is! When I began to read it, I never expected to be drawn into such an exciting and adventurous story. Which is also an amazing eyewitness account of historical events! The diary was written by MARTHA ELLEN LAURIE YATMAN. Daughter of Thomas& Ellen A. Laurie, and she was born August 12, 1850 in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She married James Octavius Yatman on August 23, 1871 at Providence, Rhode Island. Their son, Ellis Laurie, was born June 17, 1888. The family lived at 253 Knight Street, Providence, Rhode Island. Many of the family's papers, journals, etc. including Martha's) are at the Brown University Library. DIARY ... moreDESCRIPTION: Martha begins her diary the summer of 1914. Telling of leaving Boston for a transatlantic trip to Europe, and she sailed on the Hamburg American Line Ship"Cleveland" On the first 18 pages, She tells of her exciting experiences at sea. She is in much anticipation of returning to Europe again, but has no idea of the dark cloud of the impending war which is awaiting for her when she arrives. After landing in Boulogne France, they journey onto Basle, and then to Lucerne, Switzerland, and she and her 20 travel companions discover that war had been declared. Her train journey from France was not a pleasant one, for the rails were torn up behind the train by soldiers, and she soon realized that she and her traveling companions were in a very precarious situation that was quickly escalating. They found themselves trapped in Switzerland, with most of Europe"seething and struggling in the throes of war" all around them. They had no idea how they would be able to get out safely, and as they waited and worried, the war zones expanded and became more dangerous. Her fascinating. Very detailed day to day account is like nothing I've ever read before! Eventua

1965 HANDWRITTEN DIARY & BDAY BK+PICS EDITH SEATTLE WA/ IN LOVE JUST CRAVES TOM!
This is the 1965 diary of a young lady from Seattle Washington.I believe her name is Edith Weber Lercher. Which is the name embossed on the, Favorite Poets Birthday Book that comes with the diary. She was a senior in high school, and graduated the year this diary was written. She lived with her parents, and Steve, who I believe was her brother.Edith, or Edie is just like most girls her age, she talks about school, graduation, her friends, family, going shopping, dating, and double dating, but her main topic is boys, and one in particular, named Tom, who she is totally in love with. She dates a couple of other guys too, but Tom is the one she is crazy about, and she ends up dating him exclusively. They have their spats, and at times he doesnt call her, which makes her mad, but one conversaion with him, and shes back in love again. She has a friend ... morewho dies of leukemia, and his obituary is attached to one of the pages, as is a ticket stub, and a picture on the back page. She spends the night with her girfriends, goes to the drive in, and movies alot and mentions the movies she sees like,Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" and" How to Murder Your Wife" just to name a couple. She talks about getting a job at a bank after graduation, the senior ball, about Tom's brother being put in the youth center for stealing a car.She even mentions getting high one night. To give you a better idea of the contents of this wonderful old diary, here are a few of her entries. Tom called and asked me out. We doubled with Cheri and Gary.We went and played pool.Tom is so sweet& I just crave him. Tom didn't call. Nancy) He's so sweet and he makes me feel so good.I sure hope it isn't just a line. Tom called at 9:45.I just wanted to be nice. But just couldn't be.We argued until 10:15.Really I guess I feel better because he called, but I just couldn't be nice. Tom called. He's got me"whipped" and I think he knows it.This calls for strategy. But I don't know what kind. Most likely it would be wrong, so
1891 & 1894 Handwritten Diary 26yr Old Anna Strauser Williamsport PA Baby Dies
Even tho these two diaries(1891& 1894) might be small in size. The content is anything but small. They both belonged to Anna Strauser who was 26 years old when she began the first diary. Anna lived in Williamsport Pennsylvania and worked at some kind of fabric shop or millinery and was dating a man by the name of Tom. Soon Anna realizes she is pregnant with his child and I believe she doesn’t even know she’s pregnant until she’s more than 6 months along. It’s so tough to believe that she doesn’t know but in September she visits the doctor and says. Went this A.M. to see Dr. Annis Crawford. She told me what we feared was true. Then two days later she and Tom marry. And quickly I might add, and on December 3 rd. Little baby Fred was born. Before the baby is born and right after their marriage they move into a house with Tom’s mother and ... morethat does not go well at all. In fact Tom’s mother wants the couple to keep their bedroom door open at all times. Isn’t that interesting…and there is a lot of quarreling because of that. Then I was so heartbroken when I went to read the 1894 diary to find out that in the spring of this year, little Fred passes away. Not sure what was wrong with him but you can imagine the sorrow Tom and Anna felt on the death of their 3 year old baby boy. If that wasn’t enough there’s a flood in the area and their home floods. I also found out that Tom’s mother passed away in 1893. Such hardships yet they just keep trudging on. Both of the diaries are full of handwritten entries for every day of the year and then some of the pages in the back are also written on. Such a heartbreaking story and I would love to know more. Here are a few excerpts to give you a better idea of the contents… 1891 January 5 th, Lovely day. Was at the store until 4 P.M. Home then. Went to a party at Minnie Riddell’s at Susquehanna. Very nice time. Paid for ticket.29. Mite.01, Cakes.05, Taffy.05, Sugar.10, Car Tickets 1.00. Will Hagan to Oil city this morning. January 17 th, Snowed a little this morning then r

1974 HANDWRITTEN DIARY EXTREMELY NOSEY LADY FROM MICHIGAN! FUN READ! FULL!
This is an awesome 1974 diary. Written by an extremely nosey, busy body from Michigan! She turns 63 years old this year. Her name is Elizabeth. Her full name is in the diary, but out of respect to any living relatives, I wont mention it here. This lady is so nosey, she knows practically every move her neighbors make, and sometimes she is down right mean! She absolutely cant stand one of her neighbors,Mrs.C"and talks about her being a drunk! Mrs.C. calls and talks to her often.Elizabeth tells her not to call her anymore, and after that she doesnt, but Elizabeth still keeps up with every move she makes. She has another neighbor, a man named Sonny who she keeps a real close eye on too, but of course she keeps up with all of them! She talks about Sonny going to work, or going anywhere, having a lady friend spend the night with him, what time she ... morecame, and what time the next day she left, if she left! She knows where he parks his car, and wonders where its at when its not there, she knows so much about his acivities, right down to when the man takes a shower, goes to bed and gets up! She is really something else! She lives alone, and has friends she talks to and sees regularly, but alot of the time she will have something bad to say about them, or will take her phone off the hook so they cant call. She thinks her neighbors do things just to make her mad, like bang doors, and alike. She buys a new car, and says that her friends are calling her now, just so she can take them someplace.Sometimes she does appear to have a heart though, one time she takes care of a stray cat and her kittens, feeding her and making a bed for her and her kittens, and then she turns around and has them picked up by animal control, and put to sleep! Before that she calls different vets to find out how much it would cost to put them to sleep.I guess to give you a better idea of the contents of this crazy ladies diary, here are a few examples of her entries.keep in mind that most of these are just partial entries, because she wites a whole page just

Up for auction is a handwritten diary from the year 1870. The diary is full for the year with entries for everyday. The author appears to have been a farmer and woodworker. Greeley was a famous newspaper editor. And founder of the Liberal Republican Party, a reformer, a politician, and an outspoken opponent of slavery. The New York Tribune. More about this entry later) The author of the diary entries are very straight forward and to the point. He records the days events He appeared to be a religious gentleman who attend church meetings regularly and notes changes in weather. He also has list of family members listed in the back of the diary going back to the 1770s Other ... moreentries include when he bought a wagon for 97.00 he also seems to be tapping trees for Maple syrup. I am not sure what connection the author had with Greeley perhaps he had just asked him to speak at his church and Greeley wrote the note in the diary. Regardless the diary needs more research. Any questions feel free to ask Horace Greeley(February 3. 1811– November 29, 1872) was an American newspaper editor, a founder of the Liberal Republican Party, a reformer, a politician, and an outspoken opponent of slavery. The New York Tribune(which he founded and edited) was the most influential U.S. newspaper from the 1840s to the 1870s and"established Greeley's reputation as the greatest editor of his day.1] Greeley used it to promote the Whig and Rep

1944 handwritten diary Mary Ohio Hair lock Calls mom a bitch! This gal is wild!
This is the 1944 diary of a young lady from Mansfield Ohio. Her full name is in the diary. But out of respect to any living family members or friends I will just call her Mary. She lives with her parents, and is not in school I don't think, but does work somewhere, however she never mentions where.Im assuming she's in her late teens or early twenties.Mary doesn't really go into much detail about her life except for the men she sees, and the partying she does. She mostly talks about the different guys she sees, or thinks she's in love with, and all the drinking, smoking, dancing, and being very permiscuous. She even sees a married man, and I mean alot! She mentions, never loving a girl before, which had me kind of confused, because the way she talked you'd think she was strictly straight. She says,I have never loved a girl before. She ... moreis not attractive, but yet isn't homely.Anyway, she is in trouble with her mother alot for coming in at all kinds of hours, but her mother obviously can't stop her because she continues to do it, calling her,the old bitch"Her father is away alot, and she really doesn't say much about him either. The best way to give you an idea about this very entertaining diary is to give you a few examples of her entries. NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN Handwritten Manuscript Diary/Hunting/Fishing/Archery 1647
AMAZING. ORIGINAL CIRCA LATE 17TH CENTURY DIARY FRAGMENT PERTAINING TO NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS. This extraordinary early diary clipping is dated 1647 and provides a fascinating glimpse at Pilgrim observations of the indigenous population in the rugged New World(probably Massachusetts Bay Colony) Neatly penned in an unknown cursive hand. Clipping is presumably a slightly later contemporary transcription(ca. 1685) of the original diary entry, made in an effort to help preserve the writings for later publication. Early manuscript is devoted exclusively to the activities and behavior of Native American Indians. Particularly their methods of hunting and fishing. Included is a reference to the"Powawes" an early term used to describe Indians who practiced forms of magic. Lengthy early fragment is backed by an additional layer of thin paper ... moreand matted onto single sheet of modern paper. The Indian people in these parts at the English first com ing. Were very barbarous and uncivilized. Going for the most part naked. Although the country be extreme cold in the winter-season: they are onely clothed with a Deer skin. And a little bit of cloth to cover their privy part. The Women for the most part are very modest. Although they go as naked as the Men; they are generally very laborious at their planting time. And the Men extraordinary idle. Making their squawes to carry their Children and the luggage beside; so that many times they travell eight or ten mile. With a burden on their backs, more fitter for a horse to carry than a woman. The men follow no kind of labour but hunting. Fishing and fowling. In all which they make use of their Bowe and Arrowes to shoot the wilde creatures of the Trees. As Squirrells, gray and black Rockoones; as for Deer they ordinarily catch them in traps. With a pole bent down, and a Cord at the end. Which flyes up and stayes their hasty course. Bever. Otter. And Moose they catch with Traps also; they are very good marks-men. With their Bowe and Arrowes. Their Boyes will ordinarily shoot fis

1929 Handwritten Diary Evelyn Taylor Hialeah Miami Dade Co FL Worthy Matron OES
This is a handwritten diary representing the year 1929 and kept by a woman by the name of Evelyn M. Taylor who lived in Hialeah( Miami-Dade County) Florida. As you can see on the front of her diary in gold embossed lettering it says her name. Then“Worthy Matron. 1929. Hialeah Chapter No. 153. O. E. S. Which means of course that she held the highest position for her chapter of the Masonic group Order of the Eastern Star. I found a brief description concerning a“Worthy Matron” and I quote… Traditionally. A woman who is elected Associate Conductress will the following year be elected to Conductress, then the next year Associate Matron, and the next year Worthy Matron. Usually the woman who is elected to become Associate Matron will let it be known who she wishes to be her Associate Patron, so the next year they will both go to the East together ... moreas Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. There is no male counterpart to the Conductress and Associate Conductress. Only women are allowed to be Matrons, Conductresses, and the Star Points(Adah, Ruth, etc. and only men can be Patrons. A Worthy Matron is the leader of the Chapter. She makes sure the Chapter flows effortlessly. The duties of the OES Worthy Matron is never to be enlightened to anyone other than an OES Worthy Matron. Evelyn was born about 1900 and was married to Henry Taylor. There are only 9 days that don’t have an entry so the diary is almost full. Most of the entries have to do with her work as a Worthy Matron and also her life while living in Florida in the 1920’s. Here are a few examples… 1929“January 1 st– 3 rd, My officers were appointed and our instillation is to be on my Birthday for which I am very proud. Anna to preside during instillation… Sister Angie Jameson Mauk acting as Marshall. Sister Dora Reynolds as Chaplain and Sister Mabel Ramey as organist. I thank them all…I thank my chapter for the high honor they have given me and hope that I shall never prove myself unworthy of their trust… January 10 th. My first blue day this year.
1930's Handwritten Diary Burr Oak Kansas Difficult Divorce Letters to Daughter
This is really a rare type of diary. It was written in the 1930’s by a woman by the name of Madge and she was writing it for her daughter Laura. The reason this diary is so rare is that Madge has just left her husband(or he left her) and they are in the process of getting a divorce. In fact when the divorce was granted. The court decided in her favor for reasons of“extreme cruelty and gross neglect of duty and abandonment for more than a year. She was very sick and entered into the hospital while they were married and supposedly he didn’t take good care of her then. To say the least. I can’t help but think too that the Great Depression which started in 1930 had something to do with the difficultly of their life. Just an observation. I do know her full name but will give that to the winning bidder and leave it out of this listing for respect ... morefor the author and her daughter. I can tell you that Madge is 42 years old when the first entry begins on September 1930 and her baby girl Laura is just 3 years old. Robert is her estranged husband and Madge was his second marriage. In his first marriage he had 3 boys. Robert ended up marrying a third wife not long after his divorce from Madge. All of this takes place in or around Burr Oak Kansas. There are a total of 111 handwritten pages and the interesting part is that the first half of the diary is written in the form of letters to her soon to be ex-husband Robert but she calls him“Daddy. Then the second half of the diary is written in the form of letters to her daughter Laura. The very first page of this diary really describes this best. And following that are a few excerpts from some of the other pages… Dear Laura Bobb, Here is a little true story that you will be interested in some day. I have tried to tell you in these few pages why I am not living with your daddy and I know with your intelligence that you will understand altho your daddy may try to tell you a different story. He has things terribly mixed up and does not seem to be interested in even trying to
1936 Handwritten Diary, Dr Geo Mogridge, Feeble Minded Institute, Glenwood IA
Dr George Mogridge was the Superintendent of the State Institute for the Feeble Minded in Glenwood. Iowa from 1903 to 1935. This diary was written after his retirement and during the last year of his life. It begins on Jan 1, 1936, and his last entry is on July 21, 1936, the day he passed away. While no longer affiliated with the Institute, he does mention it a few times, and a few of the people he worked with there. During a heat wave in the summer, he noted the excellent job his successor, Dr Dye, was doing, having had only a few deaths of children at the Institute from the excessive heat. On Jan 1. Dr Mogridge was in Los Angeles, with plans to spend several months vacationing there. On that day, he saw the Rose Parade, and attended the Rose Bowl football game. The Dr has many friends in LA and did a lot of socializing and sight seeing. ... moreHe took side trips to Santa Monica, Bel Air, Catalina Island, Long Beach, and visited the parks, planetariums, the Amy Semple McPherson Temple where he saw a pageant, museums, Universal City where he saw a movie being made and was introduced to the cast. He attended the theater, a burlesque show, a Memorial Service for King George, baseball games at Wrigley Field, and more. However, he sometimes canceled his plans because of his ill health, and once commented"Afraid of dampness, not good for the lungs" Dr Mogridge eventually cut his trip short. Because of his lung problem. He returned home in April and did make a trip to St Louis in May for a conference. He wrote of going to a ballgame, the Art Gallery, the Jefferson Building where he saw the Lindbergh trophies. He mentioned several deaths of colleages and friends during this period. The author's health continued to decline. He wrote of having blood in his sputum. And hemmorages on occasion. There is an entry on July 15th where Dr Mogridge noted once again having blood in his sputum. Under that is an entry by an unknown person who states that the doctor passed away at 8:30 that evening and was found by a friend in
1933 Handwritten Camping & Canoe Trip Diary 3 Young Men Gneiss Lake Minnesota
This diary was written by quite the interesting character. I believe he was in his 20’s by the way he talks but I don’t know. There is no name but the initials H. M. are signed at the bottom of some of the entries. It’s a rather primitive little journal titled. The Scribble-in Book” and that’s just about what our author did, scribble down a bunch of notes from his camping, fishing and canoeing trip that he took with two friends by the name of Chet and Ed. The trip takes place in the summer of 1933 and the boys start out in their auto just outside of New Brighton Minnesota. They travel all the way up to the Great Lakes and end up around the Granite River and Gneiss Lake area. Perhaps the best part about this diary is the way he writes and that’s mainly because he writes as he’s going. He doesn’t just write when they stop. He writes while in ... morethe car, while in the canoe, sitting by the campfire, sitting in the tent and more. His writing even looks a little shaky because he says the roads are getting bumpy. There are a total of 50 handwritten pages and it’s a very entertaining trip as you will see in the following excerpts… 1933“Sunday 3:15 A.M. August 14 th. As you can see on the front of this journal is a handwritten script that says. Magnolia Pennington School Princeton College Pictures and Books. Then there’s a printed label that says, Neister and Harris agents Highmore, S. C. and written on that is“Magnolia Pennington, Princeton. Pictures and Books. Then on the first page is his signature. S. M. Hilliard. This journal belongs to Samuel M. Hilliard who was born about 1853 in New Jersey. Married Martha Jane Brown in 1881 and eventually they moved to Hyde County South Dakota in 1899. They had at least four children, George, Stella, Ruth and Joseph. His titles on the front of this journal actually represent his time spent teaching at the Magnolia School in New Jersey. Dist. 59, which was in 1873, then in 1875 he begins his studies at the Pennington Seminary in Pennington New Jersey and finally ... morePrinceton with several other noteworthy experiences before. 1899 Handwritten Diary Of 12 Year Old Chas. Barbour Of Gray Maine
1899 Handwritten Diary Of 12 Year Old Chas. Barbour Of Gray Maine This is a one year"Standard Diary No.51" Measures about 3 X 6 inches. The first 32 pages are printed useful information which includes Calendar pages, Weights and Measures, Postage Rates, First Aid(see photos) Populations, Interest Laws by State, Legal Holidays, US Presidents, Tides, Eclipses Etc. This diary belonged to Chas. W Barbour of Gray Maine. Doing a search. I found that he was born in 1877, so he would have been 12 years old when he wrote this. He had a sister Eva, who he mentions often in the diary and also came up in the search. Entries start on January 1, most are in ink, but a few are in pencil. These give the weather and a few highlights of his day, including working on the road, spreading manure, going to meetings and socials, the fair, visiting etc. ... moreHe mentions gaining 14 marbles on one day and in the accounting section shows that he also sold marbles. The last entry he made was on September 1. Also in this diary is a list of students in his school, by grade and what part of Gray they lived in, W Gray, Gray and S Gray and a few students were from Dry Mills, Raymond and Durham. The Principle and three teachers are named as well. He is listed as a Junior and his sister Eva is listed as a Senior. In the back of diary is an accounting of how much money he made, how he made it and what he spent it on. He bought a new suit of clothes, candy, soda, bicycle wheels, stamps, pencils, etc. Made 10 cents an hour working on the roads and worked for others at 8 cents an hour doing odd jobs. It appears that he also loaned money once in awhile. In the address section he ink stamped his name and wrote his address as Long Hill Gray Maine. His name is also ink stamped on the last page and inside back cover. The First Aid Section in the front of the diary is interesting as well. A nice glimpse of life from a time gone by. CONDITION: Covers are worn and eaten away. And have holes. Spine edge is worn or eaten away along most of back edge. Fl
1900 Handwritten Diary Young Sailor Bishop on Board Nautical School Ship St Mary
This wonderful handwritten journal belonged to George M. Bishop who was a young sailor at the time it was written in 1900 on board the schooner St. Mary’s. George was born in 1884 which makes him only 16 years old when taking this journey across the ocean. But here’s the best thing; the schooner St. Mary’s was a Nautical School Ship(which I never knew even existed until now) and used as a training ship for the New York Nautical School starting in 1874. I stumbled upon the following information when I went to look up George on the 1900 census record. The same year this journal was written. On that census it says that George was located in the“Armed Forces-Foreign Countries” and lists his county as“ Portugal” and his city as the“Nautical School Ship St. Mary’s. How cool is that. Check out the history concerning the ship itself… The Original ... moreUSS St. Mary’s. Built in the Washington. D.C. Navy Yard in 1844. Was named for the first colonial settlement in Maryland. She was 149 feet. 3 inches in length and had a tonnage of 766 and an original battery of twenty guns. Her main truck towered 150 feet above the spar deck. Following her commissioning as a naval vessel in 1844, she cruised with the Home Squadron and saw active service in the Mexican War taking part in the capture of Tampico in 1846 and later brought home trophies captured during the Mexican campaign. From 1848 to 1873. The St. Mary’s was attached to the Pacific and Asiatic Squadrons, and in 1860, her sailors and marines cooperated with the forces aboard H.B.M.S. Clio, in quelling insurrections at Panama. In 1873. Upon arrival at Norfolk. Virginia the vessel was laid up in ordinary. The St. Mary’s was one of the fastest sailing ships of her time. She was one of the ships in Admiral Perry’s fleet which opened up Japan in 1850 and was a sister ship of the USS Saratoga which also took part in that historic voyage to the Japanese Empire. The St Mary’s was commissioned as the training ship for the New York Nautical School in 1874 and served in this cap
1927 Handwritten Diary Maine Assists in Two Infant Burials Beautiful Script
I love the title our author(or whoever) put on the front of this 1927 handwritten diary which says. Somebody’s Diary. There isn’t a name that I could find anywhere but there are several other clues as to help in your research. The first thing that stuck out to me concerning our author is that her handwriting is amazing, simply beautiful. And in fact she writes and also prints at times and both could easily be framed. She must have been an artist too of sorts because there is one painting which graces the February 21 st page. There’s also another small painting of a flower. Our author’s birthday is on November 28 th. I believe her husband’s name is Hass and Gerald might be their son. At least she talks about both of these men as tho they are family. She lives in Maine because she talks about Loon Lake. Spednic Falls. Bangor and Pomeroy. The ... morediary isn’t full and out of the 365 days represented there are 253 days worth of writing so the diary is a little over 2/3 full. Most of those entries have to do with the year 1927 but I do believe there are a few from a later year. Probably 1931. Most of the entries are long too. The next thing that stood out was that on two occasions she helped to sit by, take care of and prepare the body of two different babies that died and only 3 weeks apart. Rather touching and sad entries as you can well imagine. So this diary really has a lot to offer. Following are a few excerpts to give you a better idea of the contents… 1927“January 1 st. Resolved…To“Live” each day of 1927 and get and make use of what there_ something got stuck to this part of the entry and I can’t quite make out the last few words of this sentence) 1927 you look to me now like an old blue coat and I’ll not wear rose colored glasses for you my diary. 1867 Handwritten Diary 34yr Old Orpha Eldridge Jennison Lapeer NY Lonely & Sick
This is a very charming 1867 diary that belonged to 34 year old Orpah A. Eldridge) Jennison who was from the town of Lapeer Cortland Co. New York. Orpha was born in 1833 and died in 1910. She married Smith Bryant Jennison in 1860 and he was born in Virgil in 1837. Was supervisor in 1884, and assessor three years. They had three children: Wallace, Oliver and Mary. She’s somewhat of a lonely young woman and for or only 34 years old she seemed rather sickly. There is a handwritten entry for every day of the year except 28 days. I’ve taken a few excerpts to give you a better idea of what this diary is all about… 1867“January 1 st, The old year rolled into eternity. Handwritten Diary Autobiography - 15 yr old boy 1942-57, Photos, Wm Watson, Ohio
This autobiography is handwritten. Diary style, and was evidently a class assignment for a 15 year old boy who lived in Ohio. The only name I can find is William Watson, written a back page. It consists of 27 handwritten pages on composition paper, along with 7 pages of photos with captions. A few photos are missing, but there are 18 photos left on the pages. The author wrote about each year of his life. Starting with the year he was born, 1942, and ending in 1957 when he was 15. He notes the highlights of each year along with some anecdotes about himself and his family. He told of being very jealous when his sister was born, of his mother making him stay in bed by scaring him with the"bogeyman" of turning"wild" in the third grade etc etc. On a sadder note, the teen wrote of the death of his grandparents, with whom he ... morewas very close, of his sister getting polio and a cousin who died from that disease, the death of his first pet, a canary, who died after he took the bird to a pet show. His was a typical 1950's family, taking vacations, having children, moving, building additions. As the years passed, the young boy began to develop interest in sports, Boy Scouts(he only"stuck it out a year" His main interest seemed to be music, and he took clarinet lessons as well as piano, which he was quite serious about and entered several competitions. The pages are clipped in a folder. Measuring 11" x 9" and other than some light soil on the cover, it is in very good condition. Nicely done and very well written. Buyer pay 4.00 S&H.
1866 Handwritten Diary Trip West to Iowa from North White Creek NY Loomis W Gunn
This diary is somewhat a mystery to me. I thought I had it figured out but there is still a bit of a discrepancy. First let me tell you a little about this journal. On the front cover you’ll find written. 1866 Journey to the West. Iowa. As you open it up and on the first page is written. Nov. 25. 1866 Ezk 18:31 Make yours a new heart and a new spirit. After this there are 23 handwritten pages. Most of which are diary entries, and all have to do with our authors trip West. I looked and looked at first for a name and then finally. Written in small writing, at the end of the diary passages it says, L. W. Gunn. When I went to look up this name I found a Loomis W. Gunn who was from North White Creek New York. So I went back to the diary and sure enough under the name of Gunn and towards the last leg of his journal when he returns from Iowa it ... moresays. Nov. 22. For N. White Creek. But here is where I’m a bit confused. The Loomis W. Gunn that I found on the web was born in 1818 and died November 22 nd. 1866. So this couldn’t be our man unless they got the date wrong on his gravestone. But there is a reason L. W. Gunn is written in this diary. Perhaps this diary belonged to a friend of his or a family member or maybe it is Loomis Gunn’s diary. Then there’s that bible verses written in the front with the date of Nov. 25 th. 1866, only 3 days after Loomis W. Gunn died. Again, further research needs to be done but there seems to be so many similarities. Here is some more information about Loomis W. Gunn from the web… His parents were Henry A. and Ruth Munsell Gunn. He had six siblings; Lucretia. Henry, Ruth, Clarence, Salmon and Lucia. He was buried at Locust Hill Cemetery in Montague. Franklin County Massachusetts. I know he was from Massachusetts as he was buried there but I also found him on the North White Creek New York Census for 1860 and it listed him as a border and then the directory listed his as a silversmith. North White Creek’s history shows that the three communities of Cambridge. North White Cre

1929 Handwritten Trip Diary Porterville CA to Germany Paul Foerster SS Dresden
This is the 1929 travel diary of Paul and Caroline Foerster from Porterville California. There were two newspaper clippings with this diary and one of them talked about them living in Porterville but I found the passenger list for the voyage home on the web and Paul lists his address as 727 S. Kingsley Drive Los Angeles. So either way they are a California Couple. One of the newspaper articles really describes their trip in a nut shell and I quote… TO TOUR EUROPE Mr. and Mrs. Paul Foerster who since selling their orange grove in this district last fall have resided on West Putnam Avenue. Are leaving tomorrow for Los Angeles, where they will stop for a few days. From there they will go east by way of New Orleans. And will sail from New York on May 30 for an extensive tour of Europe. They expect to be abroad for several months. Returning to ... morethe states some time in October. Before returning to California in the late autumn. Mr. and Mrs. Foerster will visit a number of points of interest in the east. Mr. Foerster said today that this is the first opportunity that he has had in the past 20 years to take a vacation and he and his wife are planning to enjoy the wonderful trip to the fullest extent, and upon their return in the late fall or early winter, they will decide upon future activities here. Perhaps one of the most interesting thing I found out concerning this couple is that Paul was born in 1869 and his wife in 1889 which makes him 20 years older than her. The diary begins on May 2 nd with the couple leaving Los Angles and the entries continue until they return home from Europe on October 13 th. She doesn’t write every day between those dates but most of them. In fact there are 133 days of writing and only 27 of those are blank and most fall before they board the boat in New York. I believe the main reason to go to Europe is to return to their homeland for a visit. Paul was born in Germany and they spend a lot of time touring all the old sites where he grew up. While in Berlin the King of Egypt pass

1888 Handwritten Diary Blanche Howland Catskill NY Famous House Catwalk Drawings
Big things come in small packages. So they say. And this is a very true statement when it comes to this incredible diary. The diary is from 1888 and although it only has 86 days of entries, which suddenly stop in August, those entries(and drawings) are very noteworthy and historical. The journal belonged to 20 year old Blanche Howland(1868-1943) who lived in Catskill New York. Blanche was from a very prominent and wealthy family. Her father was Benjamin Howland(1832-1882) who owned a Quaker textile manufacturing company. He married Louise Powell(1835-1900) Blanche(our author) had several siblings: Agnes Howland. B. Now known as Catwalk, has been listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and has been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in July. The property now owned by Mr. and Mrs. James Palmer. Is significant as an outstanding, intact example of a Hudson Valley Estate. Records dating back to 1684 document the history of the property. The original cottage of Hudson River School painter Charles Herbert Moore(1840-1920) dates from 1866. In 1872 the cottage. Then known as the Lodge, on 23 acres was sold to businessman Benjamin Howland from western New York State. In late 1900 the children of Benjamin Howland retained Katherine C. The diary is a small folio sized diary 8 inches in length approx 75 pages written in pencil filled for the entire year. One of the most startling entries is when he attended several autopsy’s. He writes" Doctor Holmes showed us some microscopic slides today. Will and Geo Curtis went up on Court Street to see the soldiers and sailors in formation. Than went down to my first Autopsy a man and a darkey girl home on the steam cars at five. Yet another entry regarding an autopsy went to an Am autopsy a man 46 years old studied in the eve. Went into the operating room saw four operations preformed got a gold pen on way to fields $ 1.75. He also writes about his experiences ... moreat Bowdoin with friends. 1864 Handwritten Diary 25yr old School Teacher Unadilla MI & Ohio Miss Easterly
This is an 1864 handwritten diary originally belonging to school teacher Harriet Easterly. She was born in 1839 which makes her 25 years old when this diary was written. On the inside front cover it says she is from Clarksfield Ohio but I believe most of her life is spent living and teaching in Unadilla Michigan. The 1850 census shows her living in Fairfield Ohio with her father Martin. Mother Elizabeth, and Henry, Louisa and Elizabeth her siblings. I don’t think she stayed a teacher for long because the 1870 and 1880 census lists her living as a housekeeper with the Gregory family. The diary has 111 handwritten pages and 73 of those are diary entries. The rest are miscellaneous notes and expense type entries covering the years from 1856-1860. She beings her diary on January 1 st and she has a handwritten entry for every day(except the 2 ... moreweeks when she is very sick) until August 23 rd. Her entries are sometimes just a line or two and some almost fill a whole page. A couple of entries that really stuck out were the ones about a woman who left her husband for another man and when she final returns a year later. Harriet says… I think that he must have a strong stomach to sleep with her now after she has been rented for one year to old Johnson for $60. Uncle and Aunt thinks that she ought to have a good cleansing before they slept with her. I’ve quoted from those pages and many more as you will see below… 1864“January 1 st. Unadilla Livingston Mich. Spent the day in trying to keep warm and in getting something to eat. I hope the year will not continue to have as little accomplished. January 7 th. Received a letter last night with bad news of the death of a friend in the army. Nothing of importance has happened today. Must hasten home now and wash. January 21 st. Thursday. Went to school this morning and wrote a letter to Loura while writing Mrs. Parker brought me two letters. One from Rachel, one from Emily. They wrote that Jane is very sick and that Martin had enlisted in the 3 rd Ohio in Cadiz. J
1919 Handwritten Diary Social Worker Lucille Thompson Barns Hospital Saint Louis
This 1919 diary was written by S. Lucill Thompson who was born on September 28 th. 1893. Among other things she was a Social Worker in charge of the General Medical Clinic and the Workshop for the Handicapped at Washington University Dispensary and Barnes Hospital in Saint Louis Missouri. I found a long article she wrote on the web concerning her profession and it was so interesting. I believe her family lived in Washington D. C. at the time this diary was written by while she was in St. Louis working. In the spring of this year. 1919, he gets fed up with her work and asks for a 3 month leave of absence but when they don’t give it to her she resigns. It’s at that time she heads to a National Conference of Social Workers in Atlantic City and spends a good deal of time there are the surrounding areas of New Jersey and Long Island. At one point ... moreshe talks about her house(or at least the temporary one she’s staying at) being right next to the Tiffany Estate(Louis Comfort Tiffany the jeweler) which I believe is the Laurelton Hall estate there in Long Island. And talk about an amazing estate. She also seems to be staying in a tent. So part of the time I believe she’s camping. While in the East she does tour some of the state hospitals or insane asylums and ends up working in one in Cape May. I also found a woman by the same name. S. Lucille Thompson” who ended up being a policewoman for Community Welfare in San Diego in the 1930’s. Could this be our same woman who wrote this diary? There are handwritten entries. And mostly long ones, for almost every day of the year; however there are 47 blank days and most of those fall at the end of this diary with her last entry being on December 5 th. Following are a few examples… 1919“January 5 th. Got up for breakfast for first time since Mo has been here. Called B. B. decided I would not see her. Think she felt much relieved. Went to Symphony and Mrs. Major did not enjoy it much. Was fine out but later cold. Still snowing some. Mo went down for dinner but didn’t eat m
Two 1891 Handwritten Diaries, Chicago, 1 personal Diary,1 European Travel Diary
The bid is for two 1891 handwritten diaries. Unfortunately. No names were left in the diaries, but I believe the family lived in Chicago as the author wrote of shopping at Marshall Fields, of going to Kenosha etc. The mother and father appear to be middle aged, and have several young children. After reading both diaries, I came to the belief that both diaries were written by the mother, and that she often refers to herself in the third person as"Ma" and calls her husband"Pa" The handwriting in both diaries is similar, and both have the same misspelled words. Also, it's the only way some of it makes sense. The year started on a very bad note: Jan 1.This is the first day of the year and a sad one. Ma never remembers to have had so much trouble on New Years Day. Pa got some keys and entered the flat on Fletcher St.and ... morelooked at the damage done to the rooms. They are burned with lye. Ma was going to look at the basement when she saw Mrs Mahr. She had crawled through a window in the front. Mr Mahr came with a hammer and forced one door open. Ma called the patrol but they had left. Jan 2.Pa gets out a warrant for Mr Mahr.In the eve a constable came with a warrant to arrest me and Mrs McElliott(I think the McElliotts were boarders) We went later on to Judge Boggs. Mr Follebaur signed my bond and I signed. evidently. Mr Mahr pressed charges as well) We went to the doctor to get medicine to get sleep. I am worried and so sick. And the problems continue. Jan 3.Mr Hendricks called and don't want to have Ma's case come off next Monday.Mr McElliott swallowed some diamond dye. Ma got him to vomit. He is all right again. Mrs McE is very much frightened. The cases dragged on. Mr Mahr got a change of venue and so forth. When they finally appear in court. The author wrote(in part) Jan 19.Mrs. Mahr and the gang are there. The trial goes on and we all never heard such lies as were told. The husband was an inventor. Who patented some special types of cribs and beds. While workin
DIARY of Isaac G. Hotchkiss 1879 handwritten journal
I suggest reading the photos. They really are interesting. He was involved as a mason and also belonged to a farmers lodge in flushing Michigan. He kept timely record of the weather and worked a variety of trades including farmhand. Butcher, carpentry, using horses. It is obvious that record keeping was important to him. The penmanship is beautiful. He would complete one book like this a year. He was 49.
1882-87 Handwritten Diary Yates Knox County IL Leroy Thomas, Pease, Sharp Family
Up for auction today is a fabulous diary written between the years of 1882 and 1887. It was written by several people. A husband and wife and then a third party looks like they picked it up and wrote some. They lived in or around Knox County Illinois. The author was Leroy Augustus Thomson who was born on November 24 th. 1856 in Marion County Ohio and died February 18 th. 1929 in Yates City Illinois. He married L. Amanda Pease. She was born in 1858 in Knox City. Illinois. Died October 4th, 1880 in Salem. Carroll Co. Illinois, at the young age of 23. Amanda and Leroy had a baby girl that died the same day she was born. Leroy’s second wife was Alberta(Bertie) Sharp whom he married January 10 th. 1884. You can imagine what a heartbreaking time it was for Leroy and on the second year of Amanda’s death he writes this… October 4 th. 1882. Two years ... moreago this day Dear Amanda died after four months of suffering. Death has lost half its honor since she left me and today I love her. Cast off clothing even for most than any human being on earth. Rest be with her. This diary has about 278 handwritten pages and because it’s so long I couldn’t read all of it but did do some speed reading to gather some quotes. It’s large too measuring about 7 ½” x 12” It looks like it was written in a ledger style journal but the front cover has fallen off(and is not accounted for) and several pages in the front and back are loose or missing. The diary actually starts on page 27 and ends on page 306. I do have a few of the pages that came loose but they are in poor shape. Pages 27-29 have torn off corners but all the pages after that are fine and again that makes 278 pages of writing. As I said above the diary is written by at least three different people. Leroy is the main author but then after his marriage Bertie helps him to record the daily events. Sometimes at the end of many of the years he’ll write a summary and I found this one very interesting… The year 1885 has not been particularly noted for any great things in gene
1933 Great Depression Handwritten Diary 18yr Old Girl Alta Lebo Mowerr Macon IL
Up for auction today is a 300 page handwritten diary from the year 1933. It was written by an 18 year old girl by the name of Alta Juanita Lebo who was from Macon Illinois. I didn’t find Alta’s obituary but did find her brother Owen’s. And I quote… Owen Travis Lebo. 97, of Decatur. IL passed away on Sunday(Nov. 30. 2014) at Decatur Memorial Hospital. A service to celebrate Owen's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday(Dec. 8. 2014) at Dawson& Wikoff Funeral Home, Macon. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be in South Macon Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to East Park Baptist Church. Owen was born on September 1. 1917 in Macon, IL, the son of Chester Owen and Nettie Mae(March) Lebo. He graduated from Macon Community High School and served in the U.S. Army 38th Division Indiana National ... moreGuard during WWII. Being stationed in the Philippines. Owen accompanied General MacArthur on his return to Leyte Island. After his service to his country he returned home to farm with his father and to work as a mechanic for Macon Farm Supply until he retired to design and have built his underground sod home which he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents. Sisters: Lillian Galloway, Alta Mowerr and his niece: Georgiana Mowerr. Special thanks to the 6th and 3rd floor nurses at Decatur Memorial Hospital and a special appreciation to Sharon Norris and Tim Stone. So it looks like Alta married a man by the name of Mowerr. George Mowerr to be exact. I looked them up and George was a Marine and they had one daughter; Georgia Anna Mowerr. That’s when I discovered the very sad news that was to come for George and our author, Alta. I found all of this information from a blog site, plus some incredible photos of the family that I’ve printed and scanned above. It looks like their daughter Georgia only lived to be 17 years old and died a tragic death. The family must have moved to California as that is where her death took place. In San Diego. The following is from the

1894 Handwritten Diary - Wm McMinn - Oneonta NY, RR Employee D&H, Vol FIreman
William McMinn turned 25 years old the year he wrote this diary. He lived in Oneonta NY with his wife Jennie. And his two young daughters Edith, 2, and Ethel, 1. Mr McMinn worked for the D&H railroad in the shops, and later in the year was transferred to the wrecking crew. He was also heavily involved with the Hose Co. which was quite a social organization as well as being a group of firefighters. He wrote much about the fires in the area, and especially about the fire that leveled the Normal School: Feb 15.Had just got home when the Fire Alarm sounded. The Normal School was on fire and that Beautiful Building burned to the ground in spite of all our efforts. It is about the worst blow Oneonta could have, insured for $75,000. In the days that followed. Mr McMinn wrote of the demolition of the building and the town's efforts to get ... morefunding for a new school. The author wrote about the bad economy of the time. There were times when he did not work enough hours on the railroad to pay all his bills. In the beginning of the diary. He had to sell his bicycle to pay a debt: Jan 19.The pay was out. I only drew $30.65. Went down street and payed my debts as far as the money went. Slant payed me $30.00 for the wheel tonight. I payed Furgerson $22.90 what I owed him. Jan 20.I worked 9 hours today. Mr Skinner received orders today to put shops on 8 hours time and he laid off a few men. This is the hardest times all over the country I ever saw. There are 100.000 men idle in New York City alone. May 21.Went down street awhile this evening. They are having floods down in Pennsylvania. Lots of rain and a great deal of damage done. The ground is very dry here, The pay car was out today. I only drew $32.20 and could not pay all my debts. The author wrote quite a bit about his work on the railroad. He wrote of going to work in Albany for a few days. And of often having to go out of town when the wrecks occurred. On occasion, he described how the wrecks occurred. I was surprised to read that he was at le

1928 Handwritten Diary Hallie Miles Danville Indiana 13 Deaths In Area Kansas
Although I can’t say for certain(but I’m almost positive) that this 1928 diary belonged to Hallie Miles of Danville Indiana. Her name is not written in the diary itself but there are several newspaper clippings slipped between the pages and most have to do with Mrs. Dan Miles documenting some of the events she either hosted or attended. Then she talks about her husband Dan in the diary and other members of the family and all seemed to tie together. If it is Hallie she was born about 1881 which makes her in her late 40’s at the time this diary was written. Her husband Daniel owned and ran a dry goods store. There is a handwritten entry for every day of the year and also tons of names for the folks in the area; and I’ve listed those names at the end of this description. The one thing that really stuck out to me with this diary is that there ... morewere 13 deaths that year; and I might have even missed some as I read the diary rather quickly. I live in a small town also and I can’t imagine there being that many deaths within 1 years time. I’ve taken a few excerpts to give you an idea of the contents… 1928“January 30 th. As soon as I got the work done up I got ready and met Alice and Mrs. Higgins and we called at Willie Pierson’s where Lily lay a corpse. Richard came down awhile after school. Wrote to Lulu. February 22 nd, After I got the work done up in the forenoon I went up to Frank Chadd’s where his father lay a corpse. Came home and got dinner and Mr. and Mrs. Pierce came by and we went to Mrs. Zimmerman’s funeral at the church. On the way home I stopped to see Bertha and Mrs. Higgins. Maudie and I went to the operetta at night. The Belle of Barcelona” where Kenneth had a leading part. Bad day. March 27 th, I made a salad to send up to Kate then ironed awhile. Maudie came by and we went up to Kate’s a little while. Home and got dinner and finished ironing then went with Tom and Minnie out to Jennie’s funeral which was at 2:00 o’clock then to the Baptist Church where Tish’s was held at 3:30. Went to cemete
1888 & 89 Handwritten Diary Hudson River Trip Meuchen NY Portland ME Steamboats
Again. Another book(diary) you can’t judge by its cover; and considering where it’s been, it’s no wonder it’s worn and dirty. I don’t know the authors name but I think he might be from Metuchen New Jersey. This wonderful little journal represents two incredible trips taken in the summer of 1888 and 1889. The first four pages are a little stuck together and in the worse shape. There are several miscellaneous notes on them plus his diary entries also start on these pages. After that the pages look good but a few of the pages of writing is a bit smudged as he wrote in pencil. All is readable however. Our first trip also begins on these pages with him leaving from the New York Harbor. One of the most interesting and rare entries in this diary is that he gives a detailed description of the great steamboat. The Albany” which I’ve scanned a photo ... moreof above. He takes this ship up the Hudson River and his 1 st trip consists of 12 handwritten pages detailing his adventures for the next several days. Then the 2 nd trip is about a year later and this one is much longer and contains 75 handwritten pages detailing his trip riding on a few different steamboats and trains and heading to Portland Maine and back. Plus there are additional handwritten notes. So all in all there are a total of 105 handwritten pages. Following are a few excerpts to give you a better idea of the contents… 1888“On Friday morning. July 20, I boarded the 7:30 P.RR train at Metuchen for N. Y. intending to go up to Albany on one of the day boats. As our first boat came into the Desbrosses St. Slip I had the pleasure of seeing the“ Albany” boat slowly moving out into the river from the adjoining Vesta St. Pier. Knowing that the only other landing she would make in the city would be at 22 nd St. I boarded on 9 th Ave. L’ train and up to 23 rd St. and took a surface car to the ferry arriving at the 22 nd St. Pier in time to purchase ticket for Albany before the boat was in sight. At the pier I invested 25 cents on one of Taintor’s Hudson River Guide
