Nov 1844 Book Laws of New Hampshire This is a nice. Original 1845 publication of the Laws of New Hampshire that were passed in November of 1844. This law book seems to have been the property of the Town Clerk of Richmond. This book contains new laws passed in the November session including: laws on railroad corporations, state tax, school districts, a few amendments, as well as commuting the sentence of death on a prisoner. This book has almost a complete tear on the front cover which someone repaired with a small piece of tape inside, contains foxing marks on pages throughout the book and there is a gouge in the back page that continues to page 210. The thin paper back cover appears to be missing. It measures 9 1/2" x 6" and contains approx 100 pages. This item would make a great addition to any collection! This is Volume II only, of what was originally a two-volume set, with this book containing pages between 1119 and 2196. A massive book. Bound in full contemporary leather with an exhaustive list of laws particular and unique to New York City, with sections on Public Buildings, Harbors, Ferries, Public Improvements, Immigrants and Passengers, Quarantine, Railroads(both above and below ground) and much more. Discussion of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, and more. A vast array of laws pertaining ... moreparticularly to New York City. A very rare book. And extremely hard to find. What makes this particular copy all the more desirable, is that on the front flyleaf and inside front cover is stamped, MAYORS OFFICE, and in the top left corner of the inside front cover is a small bookplate, which reads, PRIVATE LIBRARY of W.R. GRACE. No. 736. William Russell Grace was the first Roman Catholic mayor of New York City. He was elected in 1880, the year this book appeared, on a platform that called for the break-up of the Tammany Hall power-brokers; he was re-elected in 1884. In his second term, he received the Statue of Liberty as a gift from France. This book was part of Graces library at the Mayors Office, and later appears to have passed into his private library. Absolutely one-of-a-kind piece of New York history. The book itself needs TLC, as both covers are detached although cleanly. Leather is scuffed, and chipped at head of spine. Item has'Revised 1929' on the cover and on the inside of the first page. Item measures 7-3/4 x 5-1/4. I am also including an insert which has songs and their'Frat Medley' that was found inside. I found these in a large ziploc bag full of paper ephemera items and collectibles from a former student of KU who graduated in 1930.
