The response was so great that it was decided to increase the number from 10 to 35. This required an unexpected level of organization by the Post Office Department for this series. FREE STEPPIN - a RARE poetry book abt 1930's African Americans Black Americana
FREE STEPPIN' Vintage RARE book of poetry about lives of African Americans living in Mississippi almost a hundred years ago. This is a vintage and rare book titled“ FREE STEPPIN' It is a book of poems written about the lives of black people living on plantations in the south in the early part of the twentieth century and was written by Kate McAlpine Crady. The first printing of these poems was in 1938. And this particular book was printed in 1946(sixth printing) The book is illustrated by aquatints by Blanche McVeigh. According to the dust jacket. The author was not a black woman, but was raised on a Mississippi plantation where she had relationships with black people of all ages(see photo of forward) Indeed, there are references in the poems to the Mississippi river and“the Delta” This book belongs to a friend of mine who was a high ... moreschool English teacher for many years and who has a love for literature of all types. She has gotten elderly and has resolved to down-size, so that means that here you have an opportunity to acquire a truly unusual piece of African-American Americana. Some of these poems have more depth than others– some seemed to me like deftly drawn caricatures. But that does not mean I don't think they don't have a real value. Even through the verbal caricatures she draws. You can still learn and feel something real about the lives these people were living and the attitudes white people had toward them. These poems tell of the poverty they had to live with- the shaky housing, low wages and the dependence on others to give them food(or to overlook them“borrowing” food) and hand-me-down clothing. Teenage motherhood, lack of medical care, fear of lynching, childhood mortality, fear of losing what little they possessed– including their lives– to hurricanes and the flooding Mississippi. all of this and more is witnessed to in these poems. But these poems also speak to their everyday loves and strengths. The title poem is about a confident young woman who loves her independence and
