Rare. 1839 Boston Guide and Directory titled“The Boston Almanac for the Year 1839” including an important, early American Trade Cards- a stunningly beautiful, engraved Coated Stock Card with an image of a printing press and a brilliant white, glossy surface. This is the 4th in this wonderful series of business and tourist guides to Boston. By S. N. Dickenson. Boston, 1840. Published by Thomas Groom& Co. This wonderful little volume measures approx. 3 1/4” x 5 1/4” and contains 96 pages plus the original folding map of the city of Boston. a five page catalog of items printed by Samuel N. Dickinson's Printing Office. This Guide a history of Events in the City of Boston for the years 1838. Found within these covers is every sort of information on the city. Its’ government, institutions, police& fire departments, churches, schools ... moreas well as an almanac. Also present is the oft lacking, folding Map of the City of Boston. This Map shows the City before the Back Bay was filled with the Public Gardens and Tremont Street running along the banks of the Charles River. This example also retains the important Early American Advertising Trade Card affixed to the inside front cover- an exceptionally rare and stunningly beautiful Coated Stock Card featuring an image of an early rotary press printing press and advertising S. N. Dickenson(the Directory's publisher) The Volume also retains two of the three coated stock"Calling Cards that were affixed to the inside rear cover. The Volume is bound in its’ original. Gilt decorated and blind stamped, brown cloth covers which are in very good condition- crisp, tight and very attractive with some light edge wear and some fading at the spine along with 2 tiny tears at the spine. The interior pages are complete, tight and clean throughout. The original owner has made a sporadic manuscript entries recording various events. This fascinating Volume contains every sort of information on the city, its’ government, business, police& fire departments, churches, schools, an almanac, and most importantly a large number of advertisements(many with fantastic illustrations) and a complete listing of all businesses(cataloged by profession) within the city of Boston. This wonderful little volume measures approx. 3 1/4” x 5 1/4” and contains 215 pages plus 5 pages at the front and 23 pages at the back with additional. Illustrated advertisements. Of special interest are the listings and advertisements for PHOTOGRAPHISTS. Every ... morephotographer of the time is listed with addresses. Also of importance are the many advertisements(some illustrated) for Boston Photographers and dealers in Photographic Equipment. The Volume is bound in its’ original and exceptionally beautiful. Elaborately gilt decorated green colored cloth covers which are in very good to excellent condition- tight, sound and very attractive- the gold gilt decoration is bright and vibrant and there is no fading, staining or soiling to the cloth. There is a bit of wear at the spine ends and just a touch at the corners but overall the binding is very well preserved and displays beautifully. The interior pages are complete, intact and tight- very clean and crisp throughout with an old college library ink stamp on the title page and a"Withdrawn" ink stamp on the free front endpaper. The Volume retains the original folding map of the City of Boston which is also clean but with a short tear repaired with archival document repair tape and a bit of edge wear.
