Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The ancestors were consulted before any serious event such as hunting, traveling, marriage, war, or planting was undertaken. The Esa, the shrine keeper, was the oldest living member of the clan

Corners not turned, binding is good but a couple books show slight discoloration on the covers. The lettering on the spines are very worn and hard to read. ELBERT HUBBARD LITTLE JOURNEYS 10 VOL BOOK SET 1928
Only volumes 1-10 are available. Books themselves are in good condition with no writing. Bends, tears, stains. Bindings, also, in good condition. I think these books were barely ever read. Dust jackets have a few crimps and tiny tears on the edges and some very, very light staining here and there, probably from fingers over their life-not imprints of fingers, just a little different coloration like a bit of very light grime in a few spots. Volume 3 and 4 have small tears at the top of dust jacket. Volume 10 has the most damage of any of them to the dust jacket-see photo of top and the circle where Volume number shows through. Keep in mind they are 86 years old, but I don't see evidence of any kind of rough treatment.

The Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents"Background info only" The Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents is an eleven-volume series of tomes comprising proclamations. Special messages, and inauguration speeches from several presidents throughout United States history. There are ten numbered volumes each covering a set of presidents between the years of 1787 and 1902 and an eleventh index volume. It was copyrighted in 1897, by James D. Richardson, a representative from the state of Tennessee, and was published in 1911, by the Bureau of National Literature and Art. There is also a supplement version that covers individual presidents in depth and was published, also by the Bureau of National Literature, but in 1917. A typical volume has the Seal of the President emblazoned in the front and the ... moreback. The original first edition was printed in 1899 by the Government Printing office in Washington DC. Only 6,000 copies were printed and presented to members of the congress and senate for reference. Two thousand for the use of the senate and four thousand for the use of Congress. 1911 was the third printing and contained 20 volumes. There was no volume eleven in the first printing. The maroon cloth hardcovers look very good and the pages are all very tight to the spines. I think they were seldom opened, if ever! The books have strong tight hinges and are very clean. They measure about 8" by 5 1/2" and have a great look to them. They appear to be early 1900's but are not dated. 10 19th century issues of The American Anthropologist. Recently acquired from a North Hampton, NH estate. The former occupant of the estate was a book collector, boasting a collection of over 100,000 books. These were part of his collection. The journal was published under the auspices of the Anthropological Society of Washington. DC. The journals are in varying states of condition; two have covers that have separated. They range in date from 1895 to 1897. They are printed on something similar to rag paper. So they are rather fragile. For shipping. Offered for sale is this complete 10 volume book set titled. A COMPILATION OF THE MESSAGES AND PAPERS OF THE PRESIDENTS 1789-1897 by James D. Richardson in good to very good overall condition. They have a 1900 title page date along with an 1897 copyright page date. Volume one has a really attractive bookplate under the front cover from the Distributor that reads, Special allotment for Carthage N.Y. MESSAGES& PAPERS OF THE PRESIDENTS This is copy No, 4 SUBSCRIBED FOR BY John N. Koburn Committee on Distribution W. F. Hallan General Secretary" The original paper titled"NOTICE HOW TO OPEN A BOOK" that came with the books is also included. The books have decorative marble end pages and one quarter leather hardcovers with gilded lettering and designs on the spines making this set a rather attractive one that would look great ... moreon on any bookcase! The volumes are well illustrated with beautiful engravings of the Presidents. The pages are very tight to the spines and have light yellowing and light foxing. The leather hardcovers have wear on the edges with light scuffing as to be expected. The leather on the spines is dry and"flaking" as is often the case with books of this age. Some of the volumes have partial splits on the spine seam of the hardcovers, but all still have good hinges and open and close just fine. The gilded lettering and designs on the spines has wear and fading giving this set a great"antique" look! The books measure about 10" by 7" and average about 550 pages per volume. This set was published by the AUTHORITY OF CONGRESS as seen on the title page. The top of the pages on each volume have gold edges. I purchased this set at an estate auction in the Finger Lakes Region of NY State several years ago and they have been in my collection ever since.
