African-Americans Black Renaissance History Arts Music Literature
A Stronger Soul Within a Finer Frame. Portraying African-Americans in the Black Renaissance. Essay by John S. Wright. An Introduction to the Exhibition by Tracy E. Smith. Organized by the Touring Exhibitions Program. University Art Museum, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in Conjunction with Special Collections and Rare Books, University of Minnesota Libraries. Minneapolis: University Art Museum. University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. 1990. 64 pages. Softcover. In looking at the African-American cultural movement of the 1920s and 1930s that has been called the“Harlem. New Negro, or“Black” Renaissance, this booklet and exhibition examines several issues of contemporary concern. With its focus on the portrayal of African-Americans in the arts. On the restrictions of stereotypes, and on the liberating power of self-expression, the exhibition ... moreaddresses the unresolved problems of racial conflict and discrimination in America that are, once again, emerging on the national agenda. The exhibit also comments on the power of images to limit or enhance identity. Be it racial, gender, age, or class, the power of which we are more than ever aware. The interpose among popular and fine art forms during the black Renaissance. Sometimes by a single artist, sometimes among various artists with various talents, also pre-figures an increasingly common practice among contemporary artists. The Archie Givens. Sr. collection of African-American Literature and Life, acquired by the University of Minnesota Libraries’ Special Collections and Rare Books in 1985, served as the impetus for this exhibition. While there have been other recent exhibitions focusing on the arts of the“Harlem” Or“Black” Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s in the United States, few have considered all of the arts together. This flowering of activity by African-American intellectuals and artists included not only the literary arts. But painting, the graphic arts, film, and music. It was a time when Black Americans found a fine. Strong voice and a vision

FORGED IN BATTLE (CLOTH) - African-Americans Civil War
Brand New FORGED IN BATTLE(CLOTH) Author: GLATTHAAR. JOSEPH T. The Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers and White Officers. 370 pp. Appendix, notes, biblio, index, cloth, dj O-1990 Book Number: 787 New ISBN# 0029118158 The definitive work on one of the least explored aspects of Civil War history-the 180.000 enlisted African-Americans who fought for the Union. One of the most revealing contributions to the literature of the Civil War. fascinating.New York Times. Sixteen months after the start of the American Civil War. The Federal government, having vastly underestimated the length and manpower demands of the conflict, began to recruit black solders. This revolutionary policy gave 180,000 free blacks and former slaves the opportunity to prove themselves on the battlefield as part of the United States Colored Troops. By the end of the war, ... more37,000 in their ranks had given their lives for the cause of freedom. In Forged in Battle, award-winning historian Joseph T. Glatthaar dramatically re-creates the events that gave these troops and their 7,000 white officers justifiable pride in their contributions to the Union victory and hope of equality in the years to come. Unfortunately, as Glatthaar poignantly demonstrates, memory of the United States Colored Troops' heroic sacrifices soon faded behind the prejudice that would plague the armed forces for another century. 560.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Feog4d72f%2B%3E560-13fc1526c60-0x100-

Antique Black African Americans Photograph Frame Concave Glass Girl & Baby
Antique Black African Americans Photograph in Frame with Concave Glass Man& Little Girl Here is a great antique photo of a young Black girl and a baby. Came in a great wood frame with nice detailing on the front of it as well. This is not a modern dot picture. This is an old photograph that was transferred to paper. There are some notations on the back of the picture. Recently acquired the piece at an auction. The young girl. Maybe the mother, is holding a baby in her arms. This photo has been colorized. The background is some trees. The paper this picture is on is very fragile as can be seen from the perimeter pieces that have cracked off. Check out the great outfit and shoes on the baby. Some damage to the baby's face and one of the girl's leg in the picture. Great piece for your collection. The frame is 23" tall. By 16.75" ... moreacross. The picture is 19" tall, by 12.5" across. Old 1907 Postcard BLACK MEMORABILIA CHILDREN CHRISTMAS Antique AFRICAN AMERICANS
Here is a politically incorrect post card dated 1907 that has been in my private collection for years and years. It shows 19 cute children staring at the christmas turkey in the middle of the table.
