Up for bid is the 1929 Linc-Leo. The yearbook of Lincoln High School in Evansville, Indiana. This yearbook is extremely rare. It is just the fifth yearbook published by the defunct predominantly-black school. This well-illustrated 76-page hardback contains pictures of the students and faculty, sports teams, clubs and other organizations, plus vintage ads and a review of the school year. It is in very good condition overall, but the covers are pulling away from the hinges. The historical significance of this yearbook can not be overstated. This newspaper contains a front page heading and report that African-Americans(the term used in 1936 was"Negroes" were seeking entrance to the US Naval Academy in ANNAPOLIS. It was not until 13 years later. 1949, that the first African-American Ensign Wesley A. Brown actually graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. MD. John H. Conyers of South Carolina was the first black admitted on September 21. 1872. After his arrival, he was subject to severe, ongoing hazing, including verbal torment, and beatings. His classmates even attempted ... moreto drown him. Three cadets were dismissed as a result, but the abuse, including shunning. Continued in more subtle forms and Conyers finally resigned in October 1873. The first African American officers in naval history were commissioned in 1944. The 12 commissioned officers and one warrant officer became known as the"Golden Thirteen. President Truman ended formal racial segregation in the armed forces in 1948 by executive order. Came in a great wood frame with nice detailing on the front of it as well. This is not a modern dot picture. This is an old photograph that was transferred to paper. There are some notations on the back of the picture. Recently acquired the piece at an auction. The young girl. Maybe the mother, is holding a baby in her arms. This photo has been colorized. The background is some trees. The paper this picture is on is very fragile as can be seen from the perimeter pieces that have cracked off. Check out the great outfit and shoes on the baby.
