Pronounced: Ta qwa or Tah gwa) They range in size from a cherry to a grapefruit and average about the size of a walnut. It usually takes from 15 to 20 to make a pound. Chemically they are pure cellulose and before the nut mature have a milky sweet liquid in the center. When ripe the nuts fall to the ground and are gathered and dried from four to eight weeks after which they become extremely hard. The nut is not toxic. Color varies from blue-white to amber with most nuts ivory-amber. The ivory nut is close grain and very hard. The cellular structure and grain is similar to that of elephant ivory. But is more dense and resilient. It resembles the finest ivory in texture and color and is slightly softer than mammal ivory and usually contains a void in the center of the nut. Bound in dark maroon cloth with paper spine labels. Top edges gilt. Fore edges untrimmed. Strong hinges except vol. 21. Volume one displays owners comments. But very clean contents otherwise. There are a few page markers sleeves that discolored pages. Bindings are very good but show minor wear. All are lightly worn at corners and spine ends. And the spine labels show some scratching, darkening and chipping. Overall this set is very good.

It is a nicely preserved late 19th century collection of anecdotes and passages relating to the home. With 8 full page black and white illustrated plates through out the book. It also contains chapters on etiquette. Manners, contentment and life duties for both wife and husband in 1899. It measures 6 1/4 inches by 8 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. And weighs a hefty 3 pounds.
