Binding is firm. Inner hinges strong. Text block firm. Text is clean and complete. Front blank endpaper is missing. No torn or loose pages. Good example of this scarce 130-year-old recipe and how-to book. Description: This is an early Victorian recipe book published for the use of home-makers. Farmers, shop-keepers, tradesmen, craftsmen, artisans- everybody, in fact, just as the title states. EVERYBODY'S GUIDE is a rare treasury of practical. Useful and long-lost recipes and how-to instructions. The quantity of information this book contains is staggering: Recipes for cooking and preparing meat and fowl. Cake, pie and pastry recipes. Confectionery and candy recipes. Recipes for beer and wine-making. And much, much more. Including cures and first aid. Household hints. Farm facts and fixes. Bee Keeping. How to make all kinds of dyes. A lengthy section on watch-making and watch/clock repair, jewelry making, gold and silver plating, gold and alloys, etc. Practical information and advice for tradesmen and mill owner/operators. And much, much more. Down below you’ll see that I tried my best to give you some idea of just how extensive the range of information is in this book. I went as far as I could– and still more than half of what’s in this book didn’t make it on to this page! It isn’t often that a book defies my ability to fully describe its contents. But this is one of those occasions. So after you spend a few minutes browsing through the summaries I created below, pause and remind yourself that we’ve only scratched the surface of the 19th-century wisdom contained herein. Good luck,

These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mammy; the Pickaninny stereotype of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. As published into a special memorial edition just after Stowe's passing on July 1. 1896. Y OU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK! I t is dominated by a single theme: the evil and immorality of slavery. Stowe emphasizes the horrors of slavery on almost every page of the novel while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as the enslavement of fellow human beings. U nlike the 1852 1st edition. Published by John P. Jewett& Company in two separate volumes, this special First MEMORIAL EDITION! contains VOL. 1& 2 combined into one book. Southern reactions ranged from forcing a bookseller in Mobile. The book also helped create a number of stereotypes about Blacks, many of which endure to this day. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mammy; the Pickaninny stereotype of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. In recent years, the negative associations with Uncle Tom's Cabin have. To an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a"vital antislavery tool. In the first year of publication, 300,000 copies of Uncle Tom's Cabin were sold. The book eventually became the bes

~Rare 1st Edition 1880 Ben Hur Lew Wallace Classic Book Tale of the Christ
=" Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ Lew Wallace 1887 Harper& Brothers Franklin Square. New York A classic and timeless work. “Lew Wallace said that he wrote Ben-Hur as a way to sort out his own beliefs about God and Christ. In doing so he inspired many readers by combining romanticism and spiritual piety common in sentimental novels of the 19th century with the action and adventure found in the more popular stories of the day. It prompted many clergy to reverse their church's long-held opposition to novels and actually encourage their congregations to read Ben-Hur. As a result helping it to become one of the best-selling novels of its time. Surpassing Harriet Beecher Stowe's ... moreUncle Tom's Cabin( 1852) as the best-selling American novel and retained this distinction until the 1936 publication of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. Book is a First Edition. Book in very good condition for its 130+ years. Buyer to pay $4 shipping, no reserve!

Antique 1st Edition CIVIL WAR ERA Book BEECHENBROOK RHYME OF THE WAR Preston
Offered for auction is this rare Civil War Era book titled BEECHENBROOK; A RHYME OF THE WAR by Margaret J. Preston and published by KELLY& PIET out of Baltimore in 1867. It has a title page date of 1867 and a copyright page date of 1866 and I believe is a first edition book. The author wrote a collection of poetry regarding the Civil War struggles making this a rather unusual book. The dedication reads. TO EVERY SOUTHERN WOMAN, WHO HAS BEEN WIDOWED BY THE WAR, I DEDICATE THIS RHYME, PUBLISHED DURING THE PROGRESS OF THE STRUGGLE, AND NOW RE-PRODUCED-AS A FAINT MEMORIAL OF SUFFERINGS, OF WHICH THERE CAN BE NO FORGETFULNESS. Very strong words for a book of rhyme. It has black and white illustrations and is a very readable book. There are 106 pages and it measures about 8 1/2" by 6" I would rate this book as fair condition as it ... morehas wear on the covers and spine with discoloration on the covers also. There is wear on the edges, but the pages have very light yellowing and foxing, less than one would expect from a book this old. The pages are still fairly tight to the spine and there are no loose pages. There is a hand written inscription on one of the blank pages as this was an"award" book to a student from the SOUTHERN HOME SCHOOL in 1868! Shipping and handling to any of the lower 48 states is $7.00 and will be paid for by the winning bidder. It will be shipped Priority Mail for a fast and safe delivery. JOAN CRAWFORD FILM BOOK - WARMLY SIGNED & INSCRIBED Illustrated 1st Edition 1968
THE FILMS OF JOAN CRAWFORD. By Lawrence J. Quirk. A Lavishly Illustrated Filmography of the Great American Actress JOAN CRAWFORD. WARMLY SIGNED and INSCRIBED by JOAN CRAWFORD on a piece of HER PERSONAL. PRINTED STATIONERY/ NOTE-PAPER. Happy Birthday/ Pierre/ with love/ Joan” The note-paper is 4.25” x 5.25” It is light green and printed at the top in yellow and black. It is Inscribed and Signed by Crawford in blue ink. It is quite lovely. The note-paper was attached to the front free-endpaper by a couple of 3/4” x 3/4” stamp collector type hinge mounts. The mounts are no longer present. But they have left their stain on the front free-endpaper and a matching stain to the blank backside of the Signed Note-Paper. The mounts did no damage, other than leaving their age mark. The signed stationery/ note-paper is now laid-in loosely. Also laid-in ... morethe book is an unrelated note-card from the Consulate General of Switzerland to“Pierre” Dated 7.3.74. It is hand-written in German. I believe it has nothing to do with the Crawford book, but just happens to be laid-in this book. The book came from the estate of PIERRE RHEIN and PATRICIA MITAU. Who had three children all of whom took their father’s last name. Pierre Rhein was born in Switzerland. Patricia Mitau was born in San Francisco. Her mother was Marjorie Fleishhacker whose father was Herbert Fleishhacker, the famous Banker, Financier, Early California Baseball Team Owner, Bon Vivant, and Philanthropist. The Fleishhacker family is a very well-known San Francisco family. Any connection Pierre Rhein had with Joan Crawford might have come from the acquaintances of the family of his partner, Patricia Mitau, but I don’t really know. Hardcover Book in Dustjacket. 9” x 11” 222 pages. Illustrated throughout with b&w photographs from Crawford’s films. Published by Citadel Press, New York, 1968. First Edition, so stated. Rachel Louise Carson(May 27. 1907– April 14, 1964) was an American marine biologist and conservationist whose book Silent Spring and other writings are credited with advancing the global environmental movement. Carson began her career as an aquatic biologist in the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, and became a full-time nature writer in the 1950s. Her widely praised 1951 bestseller'The Sea Around Us" won her a U.S. National Book ... moreAward, recognition as a gifted writer, and financial security. Her next book, The Edge of the Sea, and the reissued version of her first book, Under the Sea Wind, were also bestsellers. This sea trilogy explores the whole of ocean life from the shores to the depths. Late in the 1950s, Carson turned her attention to conservation, especially environmental problems that she believed were caused by synthetic pesticides. The result was"Silent Spring" 1962) which brought environmental concerns to an unprecedented share of the American people. Although Silent Spring was met with fierce opposition by chemical companies, it spurred a reversal in national pesticide policy, which led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides, and it inspired a grassroots environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.4] Carson was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy Carter.
