1864 Handwritten Diary Almanac Civil War Bloomfield Missouri Battle Col Jeffers
This was such an interesting diary to research. Now I don’t know if I’m right about everything but things really seem to be pointing in the following directions. First off this is a civil war era almanac that acts also as a diary. It’s for the year 1864. There is a name on the front and I can’t quite make out his last name but it could be Louis Napoleon. I’ve scanned a close-up of the name itself. Most of the entries have to do with the weather and also the deaths that occurred that year of the folks in the area. However. There are some very interesting entries about the civil war. One in particular really caught my attention. Even tho our author doesn’t write the town he is from there are several clues. The first being the mention of St. Louis so I knew it was Missouri and I did find a Louis Napoleon that lived in St Louis on the 1880 census. ... moreSecondly he talks about going to the“Cape” so I was thinking of Cape Girardeau area. Then there was this entry. September 21. 22, 23, Great excitement about Southerners coming in. September 24 th. Jeffers men come in about sundown. Had a little fight with some of Lackey’s_ of Militia. 1 st Lieut. Southerner and one Federal private wounded. Federal brought to my house. Died Sunday about ½ 11 o’clock. Southerners left town about 1 or 2 o’clock. Camped it was said in the neighborhood. Left Sunday. Heard of at Mullertown” I’m not sure of that last name of the town. Now when I went to look up Jeffers in Missouri in 1864 here’s what I found out and I quote… William L. Jeffers” After several relatively quiet months. Jeffers attacked Bloomfield for a second time on September 22. 1864. This was during Gen. Sterling Price's celebrated"Raid" through Missouri. With a mere 200 men available to defend the town. The Union commander started for Cape Girardeau with wagons filled with supplies. Jeffers attacked the fleeing Unionists near the Caster River. East of Bloomfield. The Union troops offered only feeble resistance. But enjoyed good fortune when their wagons

MAINE CHAPLAIN LETTER 1864 WONDERFUL CONTENT ON BATTLE FOR RICHMOND CIVIL WAR
An original and exceptional Civil War letter with wonderful content written by an educated man who was obviously a volunteer chaplain with the Union Army. The letter is dated the Theological Seminary. Bangor, Maine, December 20, 1864, and is written to"Brother" Nathaniel Melcher by N.W. Grover, who has apparently just returned from spending time at the front with the Christian Commission. He begins by bantering with Nathaniel about his spending his time with the ladies of the Western Prairies, and cautions him to"beware the ladies" before he is trapped. The writer then begins to describe his activities since he was at Petersburg when he last wrote. His Corps was ordered toward Richmond, they struck their tents and headed to the"Capital of Rebeldom" twenty miles away. The march is through torrential rain, mud ... moredeep and sticky, with the wagons following him in the dark as he leads them with a candle in a lantern. They wait to cross the pontoon bridge over the James River and arrive on the other side soaking wet, with no fires and dry clothes. The Corps moves on after breakfast and coffee, and his wagons make coffee and tea for the men by the barrel. There is desperate fighting, he is with the surgeons in an old house, sleeping on the floor and working as an assistant at the amputation tables. He gives a graphic description of the madness of the hospital with wounded laying all over the floor and grounds, rebels included. 1864 Civil War Era Maine Insane Hospital Paper Augusta Patient Elvira Sullivan
Up for auction today is a Civil War Era handwritten document from the Maine Insane Hospital in Augusta. It dates from September 17 th. 1864 and it shows that $25.62 was received on behalf of Elvira Sullivan. Then signed, Jefferson Parsons Treasure By H. W. B. The Maine Insane Hospital has quite the historical background. There is so much on the web concerning this incredible hospital or asylum. The photos above are ones I scanned just to give you an idea of the building and it’s surroundings. One is from the early 1900’s and one taken after 2004 when it closed down and was abandoned. My printer’s ink is low and so they didn’t print up with the best of color. As far as the history of the asylum goes… Mrs. Catherine Winslow. The first woman employed at the Maine Insane Hospital. Was appointed matron when the asylum opened in 1840. The asylum ... morewas the product of a collaborative effort between the state and two private citizens, Reuel Williams of Augusta(married to Sarah Cony) and Benjamin Brown of Vassalborough. While early mental health institutions may fall far short of present-day standards for treatment for mental illness. The establishment of such places in the early nineteenth century was based, in part, on reforming care for the mentally ill. Prior to mental health hospitals, the mentally ill were the responsibility of their families, and if their families could not cope, they were either put in poor houses, put out on the streets, or locked away in jail. Mental health reformer Dorothea Dix(1802-1887) a native of Hampden. Maine. Worked closely with the second superintendent of the Augusta asylum. Isaac Ray(appointed in 1841) The building was state-of-the-art when constructed. All parts had ventilation, lighting, heating, and water. Men and women had separate wings. The story of women(and men) in relation to mental institutions is complex and not one easily addressed on a historic walking tour, but suffice to say that the state and the city of Augusta made an effort early on to provide care

1864 Handwritten Civil War Era Diary Albany Co NY Trip West to St Louis Omaha NE
This is such a rare diary. Out of the 25 years of collecting handwritten diaries and having read over 6.000 of them, I’ve only come across about 5(that I can remember) which were anything like this. The diary represents the incredible year of 1864, Civil War year of course. and every day has a full handwritten entry. I don’t know our authors name but there are several clues in this diary which will help in your research to find him. I believe our author is a young man. Possibly in his 20’s or 30’s. Not sure why he’s not fighting in the Civil War, although he does say he’s escaped the draft, but he sure gets his share of excitement living and traveling during these tumultuous times. He lives in Albany County New York or at least I think he does(which I’ll get to in a minute) and in the winter sells his farm and heads West going as far as Omaha ... moreNebraska. However he spends most of that time in St. Louis Missouri selling rat poison boxes to the local businesses and working in a saloon. It’s really a fascinating read. Let’s start from the beginning. The town that is mentioned most in this diary(while he’s in New York) is Amity. However he also mentions Green Island and is close enough to Troy to skate to it during the winter. In my researches I saw that the town of Amity is in another county then Green Island and Troy but I did see that there was an Amity Street in the town of Cohoes which is also in Albany County. So for all of you who know this area well. Was there once a little village of Amity nearby? In the beginning of this diary he sells his farm to a man with the last name of Flansburgh whom I found out was one of the biggest pioneer families in Albany County. Garret Flansburgh come to the area in the late 1700’s and owned a farm in Albany County. In fact I found photo on the web(dated 1911) showing the Garret Flansburgh Farm in Berne. Albany County New York. Is this the farm that use to belong to our author? I’ve included a scanned copy of the photo here just in case. So I think if you researched a
