If a tad yellowed with age, but not brittle. End-pages are somewhat brittle. A few text pages in the back are loose, but from what I can tell, none are missing. Front-inside ... morecover joint is cracked; rear-inside cover joint is detached. Front and rear outside covers are well preserved, though significantly rubbed. Spine is mostly present, but with a few cracks and tears that need some TLC/restoration. See photos for detail. NOTE: It is normal for all antiquarian books to have had several owners. This is volume I and II of historical collections of Ohio. This book is by Henry Howe. These are historical. Significant books. They are not the type of thing you find everywhere. They cover the different counties of Ohio. You get to see drawings he made of what certain areas looked like in the the 1800's. if you live anywhere in Ohio or are interested in history, these are neat. These books were once owned by a Ziegler/zeigler of miamisburg Ohio. He had made notes where it looked like he had traced family roots, etc. I will leave those notes in with this books just in case you're interested. The books need rebound. Whose image appears on the frontispiece of both volumes, with the credit underneath reading"Nutman& Campbell. Photo" and"Metropolitan Publishing& Engraving Co. New York" The hefty set was published in Hartford. Connecticut. In 1884 by Ralph H. Park& Co. which is listed as the copyright owner on the page following the title page of each volume; the copyright dates are 1882 for the first volume and 1883 for the second volume(both have 1884 printed on the title page) The gilt- and brown-leather- and cloth-bound books. Each of which measures 7-1/2 inches wide by 10-1/2 inches high(18.5 x 27.5 cm) are a complete guide for the American farmer, with information on agricultural, animal, ... morearchitectural, and practical household subjects- there's even a 11-page section on the prevention of cruelty to animals in the second volume. Volume I has 851 numbered pages, volume II 1034 pages, both including indexes at the back, and each volume has some 20 pages of roman-numeral-paginated front matter. But for a stunning full-page color image of the horse Governor Sprague opposite page 3 of the first volume(see photo) the engraver's name at the bottom right of the equine portrait is"Forbes Co. Corish, M.D. This says its"A Thorough and concise knowledge of the prevention, causes, and treatments of disease, simplified for home use. These are beautifully bound books. And huge, Vol. 1 has 724 pages and Vol. 2 has 1,527 pages. These covers look like leather but I don't think they are(not sure) Illustrated and also there are colored(some intricate) fold-out sections showing the inside organs, bones, brains, etc. Some of these special sections have damage where folded. Brown leather embossed spine with black and white illustration on cover. Old Favorites from the McGuffey Readers has a sunned spine with wear to head and heel cracks and large chips. The spine area is very fragile and continues to chip. Gilt titles on spine are bright. 482 creamy pages red borders and titles and black and white illustrations. Tucked into book is a newspaper article circa 1936"M'Guffey of the Readers. The newspaper article has left a lightly tanned area on inside cover and fep. The Growth of Chicago Banks 2 Vol Set James 1938 1st Ed
This is a 2 volume set dated 1938 making The Growth Of Chicago Banks a first edition. It was written by F. Cyril James and published by Harper& Brothers. New York. Volume one is The Formative Years 1816-1896. It has 672 pages and has color illustrations and a map along with pages of banking figures. The second volume is The Modern Age 1897-1938 and it contains at least as many pages and ends with page number 1466. There are color illustrations and other bank related illustrations. These two books are in very good condition. The covers are rubbed some and amazingly show almost NO shelf wear. They were obviously stored flat. The books are solid and very tight, the top pages have gold guilding while the rest do not. The outer page edges are rough cut. The books measure 6 1/4 by 9 1/2 inches. This 2 volume set was published in 1916 by Stewart& Kidd Company Cincinnati. The books are a library discard. The opening page has a inscription that reads"For Julia B. Wainwright with the Compliments of the Author-Jany 8.1916. The books are very tight and in really wonderful condition. The pages are all intact and free of ink or pencil writing. The pages are starting to turn yellow with time. The first volume has 511 pages and the 2nd has 584. The covers are shelf worn having frayed edges and rubbing. Both spines are good. There are library discard stamps on both inside covers. There are lots of great photos and illustrations. This is a great story of a Union soldier's life during and after the Civil War.

The Whole Works of the Most Reverend Father in God Robert Leighton. DD Archbishop of Glasgow is a first edition 2 vol set. The books were printed in 1828 in London by William Crows. The books are in nice condition with some separation starting on both books covers. They are intact but not as strong as when printed. The covers are rubbed and they show shelf wear. The pages have some foxing but the pages are very solid and bright. There are no illustrations other than Leighton's portrait on the opening page. Volume one has 703 pages and vol 2 has 572 pages. In Volume one the last 2 pages plus the rear blank page is lose but still in the book. The books measure 5 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches. They both have marble page edges on all 3 sides. Very rare two vol set by Robert Southey. Presented here. Is his account of the rise and progress of Methodism under Rev. John Wesley. Both books are in absolute, unbelievably good shape for there age(167 years old! Spines are tight, no loose or missing pages. Some yellowing to pages, as is common with books this old. They have beautiful Victorian like designs all over the front and back covers. The only markings are a very old antique looking library label/name stamp on the first page of both volumes. There are also library card sleeves in the very back of the books. They still have cards in them with names dating back to the mid 1950's. Published by Harper& Brothers in New York 1847. Second American edition. Both books come from the Library of the Meadville Theological School. Ships same or next day. Expertly packed.

The Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents"Background info only" The Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents is an eleven-volume series of tomes comprising proclamations. Special messages, and inauguration speeches from several presidents throughout United States history. There are ten numbered volumes each covering a set of presidents between the years of 1787 and 1902 and an eleventh index volume. It was copyrighted in 1897, by James D. Richardson, a representative from the state of Tennessee, and was published in 1911, by the Bureau of National Literature and Art. There is also a supplement version that covers individual presidents in depth and was published, also by the Bureau of National Literature, but in 1917. A typical volume has the Seal of the President emblazoned in the front and the ... moreback. The original first edition was printed in 1899 by the Government Printing office in Washington DC. Only 6,000 copies were printed and presented to members of the congress and senate for reference. Two thousand for the use of the senate and four thousand for the use of Congress. 1911 was the third printing and contained 20 volumes. There was no volume eleven in the first printing. The index is contained in the volume ten. These volumes are brown and have no seal. Up for auction we have a unique find of Dante's Inferno from Little Leather Library Corporation. New York. The cover bindings appear to be leather but I do believe that the bindings are of some sort of a leatherette material but they smell like leather! For whatever reason this book publisher did not apply a copyright date in these books but I would hazard a guess to say that this collection is from the early 1900's. Also when the publisher printed these books there was excess binding on the covers. My photos are not the best for these books due to the reflectivity of the book surfaces but the books are a very nice deep chocolate brown in color. The pages have foxing an example of which can be seen in the third picture. This shows an average page so you will find some with more and a lot with less foxing. Number XXXII and LXXII of Harper's Family Library 1835. 2 Volumes Turner’s Sacred History of the World Sharon Turner was born in Pentonville, Turner was the eldest son of William and Ann Turner of Yorkshire who had settled in London upon marrying.2] He left school at fifteen to be articled to an attorney in the Temple. On 18 January 1795 he married Mary Watts(bap. 1768, died 1843) with whom he had at least six children. Among these were Sydney, inspector of reformatory schools, and Mary, married to the economist William Ellis.1] Turner became a solicitor but left the profession after he became interested in the study of Icelandic and Anglo-Saxon literature. He settled himself in Red Lion Square near the British Museum, staying there for sixteen years. He advised his friend Isaac D'Israeli to baptise his children(Benjamin included) ... moreto give them a better chance in life.2] It is said that some of his manuscripts were written in the margins of letters, on the inside covers of magazines, or on discarded wax paper. His publisher sent him clean paper but Turner did not use it. Bound in publisher's original cloth. Gleig. As a young man, he served as a lieutenant in the 85th Light Infantry and wrote valuable accounts of his service in the Napoleonic Wars, in the Peninsular Campaign, as well as in the War of 1812 against the United States. He was part of the British Army under Major General Robert Ross that captured Washington, D.C. on August 24, 1814, that led to the burning of the U.S. Capitol and the President's Mansion, later known as the White House. He was wounded several times during ... morethe American campaign, including at New Orleans during the British defeat on the Chalmette Battlefield to the forces of Major General Andrew Jackson on January 8, 1815. Gleig later took holy orders, served as Chaplain-General of the Forces from 1844 to 1875; and at the Royal Military Hospital in Chelsea. He wrote numerous histories including biographies of Wellington and Clive as well as some fiction and travel books. Gleig died at Stratfield Turgis, Hampshire on July 9, 1888. Virginia History Old Churches & Families by Bishop Meade 2 Vol 1857 1st Edition
These 2 volumes by Bishop Meade contain 985 pages and 22 engraved plates primarily of Old Churches. This is a first edition of this work and I wish the covers were in better condition. But th text and engraving are clean and tight. A classic work on the history of Virginia and the"Old Churches" The author points out that recently constructed churches will not be included in this work. The Bishop must have been a workaholic since he started to write an article on the subject in 1855 and in May 1857 this almost 1.000 page book was printed. Shipp is free. Paypal accepted.
