Filled with remedies and incantations, and purporting to be religiously based, this book was widely scorned by mainstream clergy, while quietly tolerated and even revered by the common folk, as were the healers who were experienced in these ... morearts. Book measures about 4 x 6 1/2 inches. 94 pages including index, with manuscript ownership on front flyleaf as shown. Additional later ownership on front pastedown. Tan calf spine, with block printed wallpaper covered boards, some rubbing. Binding is strong and tight, pages foxed and somewhat stained but strong and legible, with no losses, holes, or tears, excepting only a small hole in a front, blank, flyleaf. Careful inspection shows printer had some trouble in pagination, page 65 showing as 95, 67 as 76. Also of interest are a number of printers' ornaments in head and tailpieces. He became a professor of rhetoric and“belles-letters” at Western University of Pennsylvania when he also begin his religious studies. By 1823 Hopkins entered the Episcopal Church of the United States ministry at Trinity Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania moving to the Trinity Church of Boston in 1831. In 1832 he was elected to the position of The First Bishop of Vermont taking on the rectorship of the church located in Burlington. From 1865 until his death in 1868 he also served as the Eighth Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States. Antique 1900 2nd Ed. Fireside Legends/Anecdotes Book/History of Fitchburg, MA
You are bidding on an antique. Collectible 1900 Second Edition of Fireside Legends, which bills itself as"Incidents, Anecdotes, Reminiscences, Etc. Connected with the Early History of Fitchburg, Massachusetts and Vicinity" by William A. Emerson, and the reason I have this unusual book in my possession is that my ancestor is Richard Leonard who is portrayed in the last photograph. He patented a particular type of mowing machine, the patent for which I still have, and that is mentioned in the caption under his name. This wonderful book is chock full of beautiful black and white illustrations of Fitchburg and its surroundings, and I'm sure many of the structures portrayed are no longer in existence. The book, which measures a bit of 6 inches by a bit over 9 inches by 1 inch thick, is in fairly good condition although the spine ... moreis weak and has pulled away some as you can see in the photo. There is modest wear consistent with age, modest foxing of the pages, but the pages are intact and this book would be a wonderful reference for someone residing in Fitchburg at present.
