First of all. This 18th-century leaf is just too LONG to fit my scanner, so the entire leaf is not shown. This ledger leaf was written by an unknown person. But there is a handwritten statement that give the place of"New York. This single handwritten leaf. With dates from 1806 to 1811. The size of the sheet is about 6 in. x 16 in. Notice that the costs are given in Pounds. Shillings, and Pence( NOT in the later Dollars and Cents) The following are some of the entries for Andrew Van Hoek: he bought"12 lbs. of ham" at the cost of 12 shillings; 11 lbs. of Pork at 7 pence" per pound. For a total of 77 pence, which converts to 6 shillings and 5 pence(as shown on the leaf) 1 Bushel of rye" 1 Bushel of wheat" at the cost of 1 pound and 4 shillings; 1 Bushel and 13 Quarts of wheat" at the cost of 14 shillings; also ... morethe note that states: This day settled with Andrew Van Hoek and[illegible. But probably meaning paid] him 3 pounds 5 shillings and 7 pence" followed by the statement: Answered the above 3 pounds 5 shillings and 7 pence. The large"X" or Cross-Out through this entry probably means that it was now PAID; also"Do" means"Ditto. On the back side of the leaf there are monthly entries for Mindy Van Cott or Wendy Van Cott during the years 1810 and 1811. For weaving 52 1/2 yards. She received 1 pound 6 shillings and 3 pence; for weaving 38 yards. First of all. These early-19th-century leaves are just too LONG to fit my scanner, so the entire leaf is not shown. These two ledger leaves(with writing on both sides) were written by someone in New York. These two handwritten leaves have dates ranging from 1800 to 1812. The size of the sheet is about 6 in. x 16 in. Notice that the costs are given in Pounds. Shillings, and Pence( NOT in the later Dollars and Cents) The following are some of the entries: This day settled all accounts with Sally[illegible] in full" 28 yards of woolen. 16 shillings 4 pence" for weaving 38 yards. She received 1 pound 2 shillings and 2 pence; making 1 pair of geers[gears] 8 shillings" weaving for Grime, 25 yards, 12 shillings 6 pence" weaving for Doxey, 10 yards, 5 shillings 10 pence" a man named Hosea bought 6 lbs. of pork for 4 shillings, ... more8 lbs. of beef for 6 shillings; a pair of shoes for 10 shillings; also, below the drawing of the house, there is the statement"A memorandum of. that John Dorland, and then follows a listing of items(without any value or price added) 1 new great coat, 1 pretty good underjacket, 1 new pair of britches, 3 pair of footed stockings, 2 pretty good woolen shirts, 1 new cotton shirt, 2 pair of striped trousers, 1 new cambrich handkerchief, 1 pretty good silk handkerchief, 1 pocket handkerchief, 3 new pair of shoes. Very interesting. Also, there are four drawing on these leaves: a drawing of a house(see the 1st scanned image) a woman's head in profile and a full-view of a woman in a dress(see the 3rd scanned image) and a drawing of a horse's head. Because it is so hard to read the handwriting. Some of the more interesting pieces include an indenture( parents giving custody of their son to become a jeweler) An inventory of Betty Bishops estate, a deportation derogatory from 1823, an 1863 original patent application with printed patent document, two hand drawn plat maps from Pawtucket, a circa 1800 essay"On the Utitity of Classic Literature" a circa 1805 hand written poem, a Providence RI deed from 1799, a 1795 letter written to the church elders in Sutton, an 1807 exemption from military service, a late 18th century hand written court document and several early receipts and other hand written items. Published in Boston by Oliver Ditson Company, no date. More like a music text book for children vs. a hymnal with religous as well as sectarian songs. Binding intact with all pages attached, markings in book, first page of text got stuck to previous page, no markings, 224 pages. Board have damage as seen in photo. 5 3/4" long, 7 3/4" deep, 3/4" wide. 2. The Evergreen for the Sunday School and Family Circle. Published in Cleveland in 1873 by Thomas& Mattill. 176 pages, in the best condition of the bunch. Only writing found is on front end papers- owner's name in pencil. The Young People's Hymnal No. 2 by James Atkins and Wm. J. Kirkpatrick. Publishing House Methodist Episcopal Church in Nashville, no date although dates are listed on hymns. Title page missing, pencil marks on front and back couple of pages. Boards solidly attached to spine. Contained the tags and cartoon. 8 1/4" long, 5 3/4" deep, 1/2" wide, 224 pages. 5. 2 tags from W.C. Lunsford"Fresh Fish. Oysters and Crabs Reedville Virginia. Writing in pencil on one tag, pen on the other for class assignments. 6. Cute cartoon from Thimble Theatre Movies where moving long piece of paper changes the face on the front cartoon.

11 Book Lot Victorian & Early 19th Century Vols Rudyard Kipling cr 1899 Swastika
11 Book Lot of Victorian& Early 19th Century titles by Rudyard Kipling ~ cr 1899 as published by Doubleday& McClure Co of New York. Each volume measures approx. 7 1/4" x 5" and contains approx. over 300 pages in each volume. Satiny green colored boards with gilt lettering on spines. Page tops were at one time gilt which has since worn away. All books for the most part are in pretty good condition with the exception of one volume where the back hinge is damaged(see pic) A few of the endpapers are showing some light foxing(see pic) This is not widespread. Pages and spines are nice and tight; pages are clean but have darkened slightly with age. I did not notice any torn pages. Corners are bumped. Some edges showing more wear than the others. Still in pretty good condition for being 116 years old! All 11 volumes are imprinted ... morewith the Swastika symbol on their inside title pages which was used by Kipling as a Hindu good luck symbol(left facing) Upon the rise of Nazi Germany. Kipling discontinued the use of this symbol. Book Titles are as follows: 1. Soldiers Three 2. Life's Handicap 3. Under the Deodars 4. From Sea to Sea(vol 1) 5. From Sea to Sea(vol 2) 6. This is a remarkable 19th century copy of an 18th century school primer. It is an 1850 Facsimile of a 1777 New England Primer. I have owned it for over 45 years. I have been a collector for more than that, but have no heirs interested in my books, so am seeking to find good homes for some of these wonderful pieces of history. I became hooked at the age of 12 when reading some Civil War era books in my Grandfather's library, and found candle wax on some of the pages.where some unknown person studied by candlelight when that book was new. Inside this book, there are a couple of pages dedicated to the alphabet. The first one reads"Wife fon maketh a glad father, but a foolith fon is the heavenefs of his mother. S appeared to look like F in old English, and it really means" A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the ... moreheaviness of his mother(her spirit) It is always a good exercise to read some old English, it reminds us from where we came. This little Primer has my name plate and seal on the inside of the cover, but it came from another collector's home to mine. Please feel free to ask any questions, I will do my best to answer them.
