THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM" EDGAR ALLAN POE RARE FIRST PRINTING Published by Carey and Hart. In Philadelphia, 1843. First Edition, First Issue published in a book titled The Gift being a compilation of works by American authors and artists. Illustrated with 8 engravings with tissue guards. All of which are present. Original gilt decorated. Full leather binding has moderate wear but is still attractive with beautiful ornate, floral gilt tooling on age toned leather. The beautifully decorated spine is all original w/ worn edges and 2 small tears at the top of the spine. The text block gilt is worn. The covers are intact and the binding is tight and square. This is a true First Edition. First Issue with the date 1843 appearing on the spine, on the printed title page and on the engraved title page. The book has moderate foxing throughout w/ ... moresome obvious but not bad dampstains and soiling. The first few endpapers have some minor chipping to the readers edge. There are no markings and 2or 3 pages with minor insect damage to margin, not affecting text or illustrations.
