Two Antique Handwritten Pen and Ink Books Journals Dated 1814 and 1818 English
One book is 9" by 7 1/2" The other is 9 1/2" by 7 1/2" The plain brown book has" Miscellaneous Extracts" on the inside cover dated 1818. This one has the water stains. Both have outside cover paper loss due to some type of"nibbling" over the years. It is 1 1/8" thick. The thinner book has a hand painted design on the front and back cover. It only has one page(the last page that is the Index) that has a piece missing. 1903 Gold Mining Journals Several Died Colorado Washington Drawing Sluice Box Drawings and Descriptions Killed Bear This is a really interesting set of 2 30 page handwritten journals from 1903 to 1910 Century dealing with gold mining in Colorado. Idaho, and Washington. This appears to be a memoir written from the original journal with the writer’s thoughts included at the end. It is original and was written soon after the death of the diarist. The first few pages are a dictionary of mining terms, a drawing of a sluice box and then a description of a sluice box. The next pages are a terribly interesting journal from George Grundy of mining that cost much of his party their life as they did discover gold but the journey eventually cost him his life as well as this part seems to be transcribed from someone he met weeks later. The writer then ... moreadds their postscript of the end of Grundy’s life. It is all handwritten and is fragile and should be treated gently. Here is a small sample of what is in the journal: We found Denver to be the great distribution point for a large section of country and especially for all supplies used in the mining camps. We had but little idea as to what was necessary for us to have further than food and transportation to our destination…We soon found a pack horses coming in from the Diggins for supplies and going out with their loads we paid close attention to every detail…made many inquiries as to where the best finds had been made at the end of that time we hired private conveyances to take us out to some of the diggings… Got an idea of how mining was carried on the tools required and what gold looked like in its crude form when found how the miners lived in camp and what a camp really looked like… Visited many camps and went along with Prospectors the woods so to speak was full of them. We learned very rapidly from seeing what others were doing. Finally we left the camps in search of new diggings we prospected on our own way many sandburs filly we struck a place that showed some pay dirt

4 Handwritten Journals Diaries 17yr old Bette Porter New Britain CT WWII Dating
I would have loved to have met this woman or even just seen a photo of her when she was young because her social and dating life represented in these diaries is as healthy as it gets. In fact there’s a little piece of paper stuck between the pages of one of the diaries that looks like it was cut out of a magazine and it says… Betty Porter is certainly exercising a woman’s prerogative these days. She’s changed her mind six times in the last six weeks. Who is it now. Betty? Bob? As you can see her name was Bette Porter and she lived in New Britain Connecticut. There are two diaries(and two autograph books) and because they are both“5 year diaries” they represent the years from 1936 all the way through to the middle of 1945; so for sure the WWII war years. Her first diary has full entries for all five years(1939-1943) and the second diary covers ... moreall of 1944 and up to May 5 th of 1945.She is only 17 years old when her first diary entry starts. I found her obituary on the web as sadly she died about a year ago… Bette(Porter) Batchelor. 90, of Kensington, widow of William L. Batchelor Jr. to whom she had been married for 66 years, died June 3, 2013 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain, surrounded by family and friends. Born in New Britain. Daughter of the late Stewart and the late Margaret(Cahill) Porter, she graduated from New Britain High School. Started her secretarial career at the Travelers Insurance Company, and later worked at the American Red Cross. She was a member of Kensington Congregational Church and Shuttle Meadow Country Club, was a docent for many years at the New Britain Museum of American Art which she truly enjoyed, and enjoyed golf, tennis, skiing, bridge, and was an avid reader. She traveled extensively with her husband, and spent summers in Charlestown. Rhode Island. And winters skiing in Vermont” Betty met her husband Bill(William Loring Batchelor) in 1944 so a good deal of the second diary is about them dating. I also found his obituary on the web… KENSINGTON

Rare set of 14 Journals of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign War of the United States. The Pete Dover- Post 302" Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW in Kansas City. Missouri. These journals describe all their meetings from their first meeting on March 4. 1933 all the way through to April 3, 1962 and covers all 584 meetings held during that time period. There is a break in the journals at that point. The journals pick up again on November 7, 1972 with meeting number 710 and continue through to January 5, 1982 with meeting number 818. Most entries are hand written in pen. A few in pencil. A few are typed. There are also some laid in written or typed pages or documents during various years. All the journals are in very good original condition. A rare and unusual set of historically significant journals of this great organization spanning ... morealmost 50 years.
