Vintage 800 Silver& Enamel SOUVENIR SPOON of EGYPT with Column& Obelisk This auction is for a fabulous antique hand crafted silver souvenir spoon ... morewith a hand painted bowl. The handle is in the shape of an obelisk with blue enamelled characters. This is one of several souvenir items of Egyptian or Middle Eastern origin I will be offering in the next couple of days. Mostly dating from the 1920's when interest in Egypt peaked following the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. The bowl has a view of a ruined temple. Possibly at Karnak or Luxor and shows stairs, walls and a large column. It measures 4.75" Weighs 19 grams and is marked with the 800 mark. A grade slightly lower than 925 sterling. The spoon is in excellent condition with just one tiny loss to the enamel on the left hand top side of the bowl(see photos) Airmail postage to the U.S.A. $7.95 boxed and insured. Content: The letter deals with a political appointment and Hannibal Hamlin. History: Virgil Delphini Parris Below from Wikipedia: Virgil Delphini Parris(February 18. 1807– June 13, 1874) was a U.S. Representative from Maine, and cousin of Albion Keith Parris. Born in Buckfield. Maine, Parris attended the common schools, whereupon he entered Hebron Academy in Hebron, Maine, ... morethen Colby College in Waterville, Maine. He was graduated from Union College at Schenectady, New York in 1827. He studied law. Parris was admitted to the bar in 1830 and commenced practice in Buckfield, Maine. He served as assistant secretary of the Maine Senate in 1831, and as a member of the state House of Representatives between 1832-1837. Parris was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Timothy J. Carter. He was reelected to the Twenty-sixth Congress and served from May 29. 1838, to March 3, 1841, but was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1840. He then served as a member of the State Senate in 1842 and 1843, part of the time serving as president pro tempore and as acting governor of the state. From 1844-1848, Parris served as United States marshal for the district of Maine, then as special mail agent for New England in 1853. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE. ORIGINAL CIRCA LATE 17TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT FROM YORK COUNTY, MAINE. This extraordinary early document concerns a legal dispute between Kittery residents Francis Small and Abraham Corbit[aka Corbett] Latest date appearing on document is 1672 though we suspect it was penned slightly later(c.1690) The legal action described. Originally brought in 1670 by the plaintiff Small, was continued until 1671 and then again until 1672 when the case was settled. Treasurer Frost has also added a note about previous efforts that apparently went nowhere, and has docketed the amount spent as"throne away" because it appears no one could agree on the proposed locations. This terrific early document is dated July 30th. 1807, and was penned at Kittery[Maine] Important manuscript memorializes the founding of a new company in the Maine militia not yet named, and to be made up of 82 men from various units. Notably. This is the original copy belonging to Captain Charles Bane who named in document as the commanding officer of the newly forming Maine company. Document reads. In part: The Commanding Officers of the infantry of the First Regiment will proceed immediately to detach from their Several Companies their respective proportion of men to make up a Number of Eighty two.
