Antique Miniature Book Little Leather Library Stevenson Will O' the Mill 3 x 4" The Little Leather Library was the idea of 2 brothers. Charles& Albert Boni, who sold the Whitman Candy Company the idea of including one of their little books as a bonus in each box of their candy, beginning in 1916. The books were so popular they later offered a set of"Thirty World's Greatest Masterpieces" as well as a special book rack to hold people's collections. The little books. Originally with leather covers, were 3" x 3 3/4" with"rap" edges- the cover bends at the edges to protect the interior pages. The covers are embossed with the title and author's name on the front within a decorative border, and along the spine as well, with the Little Leather Library shield on the back. At some point during ... morethe First World War, due to the cost of real leather, they switched to leatherette covers. In 1920 new owners began marketing the little books directly by mail. The shields on the back cover from 1921- 1925 are marked Redcroft Edition. Despite their popularity no new volumes were published after 1925. The books I have show signs of age which should be expected in books that are nearly 100 years old. Mostly wear to covers, and spots where they stuck together on the shelf they've sat on for the last 40 years. I do my best to describe them and point out any other problems. This is"Will O' The Mill" by Robert Louis Stevenson. Minimal shelf wear. Mostly back cover. Binding is very tight and interior pages are perfect- no tears or marks, nothing loose, no stains, pages are very light and perfectly legible. People traveling by automobile, whether for business or for pleasure, needed some sort of guide book for their long-distance trips. The Automobile Blue Book served this purpose, complete with maps, lists of hotels and garages, advertisements, and step by step driving directions, which often included the use of landmarks and places no longer there. These books were the forerunners of today's tour guide map books. This book is a wonderful reference resource for people interested in learning more about what early car motoring and travel was like.
