Completed by Nicolay and is acclaimed for maintaining the larger ten volume biography's breadth and clarity that Nicolay& John Hay completed earlier. It is a fair and complete study of Lincoln, his achevements and his times. The book is in good condition. It has minimal pencil underlining in the text. No highlighting. No missing pages. The binding is intact. Cover is in very good condition with only slight blemishes on back. Top of the book pages are smooth/ gilded in gold color. Barton, probably a Government bureaucrat, to"Friend Billings, Oskosh, Wisconsin, with the writer's opinions on the success of the reelection of President Abraham Lincoln to a second term just the week before. The letter reads. In part: Carll Brady has yet a place among the additions made to Washington since the inauguration of this unholy war for the Establishment. On a more firm basis, of the'local institution. The conduct of the loyal people rendered on the 8th day of the present month[being Election Day] will put at rest forever many of the perplexing questions arising with our troubles. Among others, the War is to be prosecuted to a successful termination by the sword. Be the same for our Waterloo. In so doing all other minor questions must ... morebend to its purpose. Among them will be found the destruction of. slavery in this country& with it, its consequent American aristocracy. The latter. It was written by Will A White. 3 rd Brigade. 1 st Division. 6 th Army Corps on April 17 th. 1865 and talks in deep detail about the Battle of Petersburg, Lee’s Surrender, the reception by the former slaves and the murder of President Abraham Lincoln. There is even talk about the Confederates arming their slaves and the slaves saying that they were going to turn and fire on the rebels. It is 8 pages long and is handwritten and in very good condition. It says in part: Oh What glorious times we have had and at present our army is fairly crazy with joy Richmond that proud stronghold of Southern Chivalry at last in our possession. Petersburg ours Lee and his whole army ... moreprisoners of war to us. The despised Yankees. I told you in previous letter that the war was then virtually settled…the greybacks(rebs) have no organization that they can call a disciplined army. We have had a hard campaign of it while it lasted and the division to which I belong had the honor of fighting the last battle with Lees army before they surrendered and in this fight my regiment lost heavily. 9 officers and 196 enlisted men my company lost 5 killed and 15 wounded out of 40 which was just one half that went into the fight and some of the wounded will never recover. Our Corps has the Honor of being the first troops to break the lines of Lee’s army in front of Petersburg and right nobly they done it too in the first days of fight we captured 36 pieces of artillery and 24 battle flags and the city of Petersburg first placed its surrender into Lieut Col Neiler hands of our regiment although the 9 Corps were the first troops to enter the city… Our Corps was commanded by Major General Wright since the fight he has been promoted to Brigadier General in the Regular Service our Division was commanded by General Frank Wheaton our Brigade by Col Edwards Dreven Brigadier. The first is of a man starting in 1865 that was a fireman in Boston. He records the end of the war and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln along with entries on firefighting. He then goes into the US Navy right after the war and travels to Europe and Africa and records incidents with the crew killing a Portuguese man and being brought to trial and much more. This first portion is 40 pages completely full. The second portion is 100 pages and is from a young woman from the late 1880s and early 1890s. She was a very active young woman in the social scene and active in various groups and causes as well. It is all in very good condition. However there are ... morethree pages with newspaper clippings glued on them. About sixteen pages have had newspaper clippings but they have been torn off. Most of these are still readable. He wrote this later in his career and put much of his experience and knowlege he accumulated studying history into it. Previous owner's gift inscription in small writing underneath the dust jacket flap. Dust jacket has some tape along spine in front. Is price-clipped, tiny stain on inside front flap. And has a tiny chip missing at one corner. And tears at two others. Otherwise. Near fine book in very good dust jacket.
