CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH 1855 YANKEE HILL MINER'S LETTER WITH VERY GOOD CONTENT
An original hand written letter dated Yankee Hill. Columbia, California, from Asa Palmer to his brother, dated September 29, 1855, with great content on the California Gold Rush. A rambling discourse about life in the mines, with miners waiting for water to work their claims, which gave out at the end of July. He has been working in the mountains on a ditch to bring the water to the camps. Living outdoors, working hard. A friend went to the northern mines but has returned after no success. The writer has made nothing yet but hopes his claim will make enough to come home in the spring. The nearby town of Columbia is growing rapidly after a big fire the previous year. Many new brick fireproof buildings, over 1000 votes cast in the previous election, the Know-Nothings very successful, and more. Needs further research. Three pages, 7 1/2" ... morex 9 3/4" pale blue paper, folds, very good condition, no envelope present. An historic California"Gold Rush" letter found in New England.
