Lilian Kaufman was the wife of the noted pianist Harry Kaufman who was a student of Josef Hofmann and who headed the piano department at the Curtis Institute of Music for 17 years. The book was acquired from the estate of Curtis and Monique Kaufman. Curtis being the son of Lilian and Harry. Harry and Lilian Kaufman were friends with many noted musicians, artists and writers, including the great writers of history, philosophy and religion, WILL and ARIEL DURANT. The book has a LENGTHY INSCRIPTION on the half-title page that was written and signed by“P. DURANT” with the date‘XMAS 1954” I don’t know who P. DURANT is. Though I am hopeful that the name has some relationship to WILL and ARIEL DURANT who, as noted above, were friends and correspondents with Lilian Kaufman, previous owner of this book, and her husband Harry Kaufman.
