Very similar work in this style is often encountered in the handles of Penobscot clubs, and, also, crooked knives, tools associated with both Native American and Quebecois culture. As with baskets associated with the tribes, much of the material we currently see in the marketplace, probably including this walking stick, were produced by the craftsmen of the tribes for the tourist trade. The stick is in very good condition, with a very attractive un-touched surface, slightly bowed, but with no damage to the carving. The initial "R" is crudely scratched into all four faces.

The book is old and is in decent shape. I would say not great but decent. I tried to capture the condition the best I could with photographs. The cloth cover is red and has damage ie: discoloration. Possible water staining and some slight tears. Nothing huge. The back cover is separated from the spine see picture 2. The pages don't appear to be torn or overly damaged. Just yellowed from age. I could have missed a page or two but not intentionally. And I must reiterate that this is antique and very old and is showing it's age. It doesn't detract from the very interesting reading. Size 8" x 9 1/2" fold, hand made rag paper, blank reverse, very good condition.Fort Frederic was a French fortress at Crown Point, New York, at the junction of Lake Champlain and Lake George, during the French and Indian War. It was destroyed and abandoned in 1759 by the French army under Montcalm on their retreat to Canada. An English fortress was built on the site that same year by General Amherst, and played a major role in the campaigns of Roger's Rangers, and the attacks on Montreal and Quebec.
