Which were orignally part of the formal sets of china that graced the imperial homes of the past. Here is a set of 4 very old hand painted porcelain butter pats. There is only one impressed mark on one of the dishes. And that mark is an“A. The only antecedent we find for that letter is Bow Porcelain from about 1750 in England. You may someday find out who made them, but we think they were actually made c. 1880 or slightly earlier. The gold trim on the edges is more likely from that era. Each dish has a flower of a different color. But painted in the same manner. The colors are pink, purple, lavender and coral. There is some wear, but there are no chips or cracks. We found a glazed over nick on one from when it was made. We found various tiny imbedded cinders and faint discolorations, but we found no damage. Each pat is hexagonal and measures 2 7/8 inches flat to flat. Some more than others with what I think is"BSM" in a square. I could not find anything on this mark. These lovely antique butter pats are decorated with the"mixtion method" which means they first applied a transferware of flowers and then hand painted and hand enameled with color. This auction is for a Lovely and Hard to Find Grouping of 7 Antique White Ironstone Butter Pats made by Johnson Brothers of England. They are neatly designed in a square shape with a ribbed pattern. The set is in very good shape. Especially for its age, which dates to the late 1800s. There are no chips or cracks in any of the pieces. They have under glaze crazing, which is expected in ironstone of this era, and two have minor discoloration marks. One has what appears to be a sand particle trapped under the glaze. They each measure about 2 3/4 inches across. They all have the Johnson Brothers England Royal Coat of Arms black backstamp. Which was used by the company from 1883 to 1913. Tintern 1, with the Royal crown logo(please see close up photos) Design– lovely white background with scalloped edge and gold gilt decorative scroll edge– interior design pink and blue branching floral– kind of a lovely wild flower look instead of a very formal flower placement. Size: Diameter of 3 ¼ inches Height– approx 3/4ths of an inch from edge base to outer rim Condition: Very detailed condition follow– 5 in very good condition– ... moreno discoloration. Or crazing, etc, just probably some light loss of design due to age. 3 show some light discoloration or“tanning” 1 shows a small dark line on the interior rim. 1 shows some slight discoloration on the interior, and 1 shows some darker discoloration in the interior. Description 8+1 BUTTER PATS Lovely set of eight matching ironstone porcelain butter pats. Each measuring 3-1/4" wide. Featuring a softly scalloped border with embossed pattern, design is a dainty trailing floral and leaf in green with a fine gold border. Unmarked, several are incised"H" uncertain of the pattern name, but guessing by Johnson Brothers or similar. I'm including an additional pat that is the same color, but does not quite match. Condition on all is great- no chips.
