1952 Vintage Literary Pictorial Map of Historic American Authors RARE FIND! Denoyer-Geppert Company- made in Chicago. IL USA 1952 This is an amazing vintage map that depicts the literary development of the United States up until the 1940's. I has locations mapped out for the homes and birth places of noteworthy American authors as well as the locales where many of their books took place. I have sold hundreds of maps over the past few years and this is one of most unique and intriguing ones I have encountered. It was purchased as surplus and originally belonged to the English Department at the University of Michigan. This map is contained in the original steel case and has a properly working spring system that automatically retracts the map after use. That being said. This old Map and historical Book is very nice condition. I believe that this Book dates from the early 1940's or so. But I am sure you will know. Included here is 1 This is My Country Book of long ago. This attractive book looks to have been well preserved and shows only slight rubbing or agewear. I see only one tiny corner rip to the leather. As this book shines like new and shows only light wear from age. This book measures about 11"x 7" inches across, is dated from 1944, and contains all 269 numbered pages. Notice that this book amazingly still contains the colorful and excellent fold out map, which shows only some corner wrinkling. No browning and no smells. Most all pages are clean and show little to no aging only. The binding shows little wear other than some light rubbing, and is strong still. My 15 closeup photos are ... morevery true to life. This is an original vintage pictorial map showing CBS radio stations around the United States. This map was designed as a direct mail advertising piece and folds out to about 20" x 13" The map is printed one side only with a decorative border that reads A RADIO MAP OF THE COLUMBIA BROADCASTING SYSTEM- SHOWING CBS STATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA. This map was issued as an advertising piece by the House of Gurney in Yankton. South Dakota which was a seed and nursey company. The map isn't dated but shows a cartoon of man in Canada pusing a stroller with five babies which I presume is a reference to the Dionne Quintuplets which were born in 1934 and topical when this map was printed. Vintage 1956 Civil War Picture Pictorial Map Union & Confederate Campaigns Nice
Here is a very colorful. And I think, one of the better pictorial or illustrated maps concerning the Centennial of the Civil War that proliferated in the 1961-1965 period- actually. This map is also one of the first maps published for the Civil War Centennial, dated 1956. This map is called" A Picture Map of The Civil War" It was published by Grosset& Dunlap. New York. And as it says in the lower right border, in conjunction with'The Civil War' by Otto Eisenschimi. Ralph Newman, and E. B. Long" Apparently an epic book of that time. The illustrator is not indicated, but he or she was a good one; the little vignettes remind me of the work of Norm Saunders who drew the illustrations for the Topps Bubble Gum Cards famous"Civil War News" set. This map clearly shows the territory of the United States and the ... moreConfederate States. Except the West Coast. It is very colorful with at least 10 colors. The map is well marked and illustrated, but not cluttered with geographical items or place names irrelevant to the intent of the map, whose purpose is to show major campaigns of and persons connected to the Civil War. The map is dominated by eight 4" x 4 1/2" vignettes or story-illustrations along the right and left borders of the map. I show the entire map with plenty of overlap in the 12 photos posted. The map is 23" x 30" It is in very good to excellent shape(please read the Description Section where I go into detail about its condition) The map is folded. As originally, into 8 equal sections. It is printed on heavy stock paper, heavier than resume paper and it has yellowed only slightly. Two of the sections. On the back side, are a little dirty because they have been exposed when the map is folded. The legend of the map provides a narrative of 76 important Civil War events. Vintage 1930's Scarce Pictorial Mileage Map USA Pacific Greyhound Lines Art Deco
Here is an elegant and quite scarce Pictorial/Transportation Theme/Route map from about the 1930's or even the late 1920's executed in the sleek. Simplified Art Deco style prevent during the Depression era. The map depicts the route lines of the Pacific Greyhound Lines bus system. But as you can clearly see, and the map proves, the Pacific Greyhound system traveled the entire United States, not just the Pacific Coast. This fact makes the map and it's distributor all the more interesting. It is not dated. But it is clearly pre-WWII and the Art Deco design is obvious and speaks to the map's age. The US continental lines are laid on a simplified map of the country and shown in the wide. Black ribbon method that you see on maps of the early 1900's whose only intention was to show the company's railroad lines. For this ... morereason, I think this map may have not been intended for distribution, but for display at Greyhound terminals and stations; perhaps usually framed and/or for sale. I don't believe this map was targeted to a youth audience. The coloration is equally simple, yet elegant: Goldenrod yellow and black on ivory colored paper. The illustrator of the map is not mentioned. Which is a shame, because he or she was a real artist. Encircling the map are small illustrations of National Parks. Big cities' skylines, such as New York and Chicago, famous land marks, and major national points of interest. These illustrations are some of the best I've seen on pictorial maps from this time period. The Golden Age of the pictorial map genre, the 1930's. The size of the map is 30" x 20" It has been rolled. Albert Richard clothiers manufactured top shelf. Expensive outdoor men's and women's appearl in th 1940's and 1950's. That company used sports, such as football, as a medium to advertise. Albert Richard distributed several football map posters similar in design and style as this one; this is one of the more colorful of the posters. Here is an interesting and beautiful advertising poster/promotional item that uses a MAP of the United States as its medium and Football as its theme. It is a map poster made in 1950 that was distributed to promote the Albert Richards Sportswear company. A clothier who specialized in high-end outdoor clothing for both men and women. But especially men, such as jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves- just about anything that an outfitter of today would carry. Albert Richard was the Ralph Lauren Polo line of the 1940's and 1950's- except that Albert Richard was the genuine original; Ralph Lauren is just copying Albert Richard and others of that time who manufactured"classic" clothes. Albert Richard distributed several other football map posters similar to this using football as a theme; this one is somewhat rare; I've never seen ... morethis one on eaby before. It shows the All-American team from colleges and the pros of that day. The design and style of this map carries that distinctive 1950's or Mid-Century flavor and coloration. It is loaded with football schedules. Teams, conference notes, and other information, front and back. On the reverse are the 1950 game schedules for what to me looks like every college in the USA. The US map is secondary in importance of the advertising on this piece. But it does show the states and the locations of the major conferences. Here is a gorgeous and scarce map from the mid-1970's that was compiled for the American Bicentennial and commemorates the American Revolution of the 1770's. and 1780's. This poster map is really a conglomeration of the Historical. Pictorial, and Commemorative genres. The objective of the map is a historical recantation of the American Revolution. 1775-1783. The map portion is simplified and yet detailed. This is a large wall map. 24 1/2" x 37 3/4" The map is really done in 2 parts: the map of the US in the center. Taking up 1/2 of the paper space. And the wide border. Taking up the other half. The map is decidedly historical. Showing all of today's Lower 48 states. The Origianl 13 Colonies/States are featured. For obvious reasons, showing place names. Troop movements, battles, and other information. The rest of ... morethe USA is a pictorial/historical account of the various territories and regions of that time. The border is the real star of the piece. It features portraits of 4 Founding Fathers. Vignettes of Revolutionary battles, historical buildings and accounts. And 5 other insert maps relative to the Revolution and evern Alaska and Hawaii, to account for all 50 states of the 1970's US and todaty. The design of the map is unique. In my opinion, because it juxtposes a very obvious Psychedelic design against the topic of the Revolutionary War- I've never seen this done before. In itself. That is strange, because being a Bicentennial map it was probably compiled about 1974-1976, when the psychedelic era was the mid- to late 1960's! This map was produced by Hammond. Inc, Maplewood, NJ for the City Savings Bank of Meriden. CT. Therefore, I believe it had limited production and distribution. It's titled. Appropriately enogh, American Revolution Bicentennial Map" The colors are deep. Bright, and almost luminous- i.e. Pychedelic. The coloration and wide unusual border really make this poster. The pape r is medium weight and the printing and coloration almost have a vinyl feel.

Here is a very neat smaller poster map from 1960 entitled. A Reader's Map of the Names. Works, and Locations from America's Literary Heritage. 1752-1960" This map's own heritage comes from the Pictorial Map genre that came to prominence in the 1920's and flourished in the 1930's. Then continued, lesser, up to about the time this map was printed. The map is not marked as to publisher. Designer, cartographer, or distributor. But I suspect it might have been a premium offered by Reader's Digest(if you know. Please inform me and I'll update the listing) Nonetheless, this is a nice, simplified map of the United States that displays exactly what it says in the title. Its art work does not look like that from 1960. But reminiscent of the 1950's or 1940's, at least to my eye. It is simplified in design and ... moremoderate in pictorialization, yet the map is very full of small illustrations. Place names, and descriptions. The base map shows only the 48 lower state boundaries. Mountains, and the Great Lakes. But it is fairly colorful in the oceans. The map's paper, about 30 lb weight, is a nice dark Manilla color, and the printing looks like a burnt tan and greenish blue. t has a nice North Arrow and nice Key. RARE 1919 Armour Foods Grocery Store Display Advertising Pictorial Map 3 Plaques
Here is an extremely rare and unique piece of advertising that employs a Pictorial Map of the United States as the medium with which to promote its products. This piece is actually Three(3) heavy cardboard plaques. Or placards. That were probably used for In-Store Advertising or P oint-of-Sale Merchandising. The map- also printed on 3 separate sections- is a caricature map depicting agriculture of the various 48 states. Particularly, animal husbandry. Because, of course, the Armour Food Company specialized. And today still specializes, in meat packing and selling. My guess is that this display piece would have graced the meat department of a local grocery store. Or it may have been given to a butcher shop that carried Armour meats. It is dated 1919. Keep in mind that in 1919 there were no real"supermarkets" or big box food stores. ... moreSo this display piece probably was visible throughout the store, providing tremendous advertising for Armour. It may have been intended as a seasonal form of advertising meant to be discarded after a promotion. But given the culture of pernanancey of the times, it may have been meant to serve a store or butcher shop for more than a year or even semi-permanently. The plaques are basically rectangles. But the tops are curvilinear. At the center of the display(the middle plackard) an Armour ad is flanked by two bull's heads. There are 3 genres of illustrations to this piece: 1) the map is caricature map and reminiscent of later true Pictorial Maps that began in the 1920's and saw there Golden Age in the 1930's- this is then a very early Pictorial Map! 2) Still Life Art for the 8 Armour food product frames that flank the map left and right; and. 3) Decorative Art. Somewhat of the Art Nouveau movement prevalent in the 1910's that grace the beautiful light brown border of the display. You don't often see these 3 art genres on a map. Even of this vintage. This could very well be a one-of-a-kind display. Or the last one of its kind in existence that Armour made and

PAUL BUNYAN PICTORIAL MAP OF THE U.S. The title of this wonderful map is"Paul Bunyan. America`s only Folk Lore Character, Paul Bunyan`s Pictorial Map of the United States, depicting some of his deeds and exploits by R.R. Handy" This outstanding cartoon pictorial map is full of humorous drawings and outrageous whoppers showing how he and his Blue Ox Babe created the entire country. It includes some of Paul Bunyan`s friends. Sourdough Sam, Shot Gunderson, Johnny Inkslinger, Big Ole, Chris Crosshaul etc and shows a great thirties deco type WPA era view of America. The map. Measuring 22" x 32" is in excellent condition with only a little edge wear.
