Antique Surveyors Tool Pack with Books, Chequamegon National Park
Up for auction today is this vintage surveyors tool pouch with the books and map of the Chequamegon National Forest. I bought this at the estate sale of Arthur a. Pond originally of Park Falls. Wis. I believe he was a surveyor for The Parks Service or Agriculture Service in the Chiquamegon Forest. This pack measures 12 1/2" in width by about 11 1/2" in height. It has riveted leather straps and steel buckles. It is made of extremely thick canvas which was used by a lot of government entities. I believe this pack is the kind that was slapped on the back of a horse or mule and off to the back country we go. It may have been handed down to Arthur Pond from a relative, as I believe it predates him. If you get on Google advance search and punch in Arthur A. Pond, you will find a picture from the Wisconsin Historical Society showing his ... morerelatives digging bison bones in Interstate Park, Wis. with notations stating the photo image remains the property of Arthur A. Pond till his passing. This bag may have come from one of them. But that is speculation. I know it is old and shows the hard life of a well traveled bag. There is slight fraying of the canvas at the break over point on the flap. There is also a small wear spot on the left lower corner front. The long leather strap that is riveted to the steel rings on the back has a small tear at the rivets. The other end of that strap is tied to the opposite ring probably so it can be adjusted. This would make a great prop for a display of early Forestry Service memorabilia. The books that come with this is from the U.S Dept of Agriculture Forest Service, National Agriculture Library, and his personal note book has a vintage Smokey the Bear sticker with his name and Chequamegon written on it. A very nice collectible piece for you to displ ay in your home or office.
