This 450 year old Ptolemaic map of north eastern Africa gives a close-up view of the lower drainage of the Nile, and interesting detail of the coastline on the Mediterranean. Seas are stippled and mountains and lakes are imaginatively illustrated. Ruscelli's maps were some of the first to use the then new copperplate engraving method, rather than historic wood blocks. Ptolemaic maps, representing the early understanding of world geography as mapped by Claudius Ptoloemy in the second century, were the standard for well over 1000 years until exploration expanded understanding in the late 15th century.
