Lake Erie Maps& Prints! An Authentic Antique Map: Not a Modern Reproduction! See Our Ebay Store for other! Free U.S. Shipping on Purchases of 5 or ... moreMore Maps and Prints Description: It is an authentic antique map over 100 years old from Johnston's Handy Royal Atlas of Geography. Published in Edinboro& London by W. A.K. Johnston. 1883. A facsimile copy of the title page will also be included for authenticity. It was drawn by Alexander Keith Johnston(1804-71) who formed the business with his brother William Johnston. They became the most respected Scottish cartographers and map publishers of the19th century, producing the most detailed and accurate English language maps of the period, perhaps only rivaled in detail by the contemporary German August Petermann, who published for Stieler. Keith Johnston's name appears in the title area and the publishing details are in the bottom center margin. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as shown in the main pic. Overall, a beautiful rare map with nice color that would frame up nicely. Size: The map image measures approximately 12 1/2 by 16 1/2 inches(32x42cm) on a 14 1/2 by 18" 37x46cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Good to Very Good condition with overall light tonal aging and a centerfold as issued. There is some darkening and a few minor spots around the edges. Otherwise it is very clean and would frame up nicely, see the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map. Payment Details: We accept most major credit cards through Paypal and Ebay. FRAMED 1870 AFRICA MAP - VERY NICE - COLOR
The Five Star rating that eBay has now instituted for its sellers may be a little confusing. With five being Excellent. You might assume that four stars would be very good. That however is not the case. If a seller has less than a 4.5 star rating in any category, ebay lowers their search position and Seller status, which is a serious business detriment, as is leaving no feedback at all. That is like leaving 1's or 2's to eBay. I ask that you please leave feedback(I make every attempt to quickly post a positive feedback on your behalf immediately following receipt of your payment) and if you are not happy and feel I deserve less than five stars you will please contact me so that I may rectify the problem. Weimar 1804 We are pleased to offer this very scarce example of a map of Africa compiled for the Weimar Geographische Institut by the german geologist and cartographer Johann Christoph Matthias Reinecke(1768-1818) for the grand"Reichsausgabe" Imperial Edition) of the superb Allgemeine Hand-Atlas published by the Institute in 1804. Surprisingly scarce and not recorded by Norwich. The map is notable for what it reveals about European knowledge of the continent in the early years of the 19th century as well as the lack thereof. Handsomely engraved and providing many fascinating notations, the map will make an important addition to any serious collection of Africa maps. The cartouche informs us that the map is based on"the latest ... moreastronomical observations" and is in fact the third revision to the plate: Turning to the map itself. We find the Lakes Region completely unknown with just a tentative outline of part of Lake Malawi. Someone has added a manuscript notation for a region inhabited by"Mujaco" described in contemporary accounts as a people who trade"with the people on the Upper Bahr el Abiad and on the confines of Darfur" Secondary notation for Ethiopia in German form- ETI OPI EN(T" and"I" virtually identical in German handwriting of the time) Timbuktu was still a place of great mystery to Europeans at the time as the expeditions of Alexander Gordon Laing(who did not survive the journey) and René Caillé(successfully) lay some two decades ahead. Note the non-existent Mountains of Kong above a manuscript addition of"Tonauwah" described as a"Haupstadt" in German geographical texts of the period: The Nile is shown descending from the Mountains of the Moon as the map becomes largely a void further south: Notations speak of Mimosa Forests. Portuguese forts, unknown river sources. The region described as"Monomotapa" actual

Also included is a copy of a 1933 newspaper article printed on parchment type paper& a Piri Reis Historical information certificate. This 1933 article was one of the first articles that actually explained the map to the public after it was professionally looked at. These certificates are meant to frame and display next to the map. In 1929. Historians found an amazing map ... moredrawn on a gazelle skin. Research showed that it was a genuine document drawn in 1513 by Piri Reis, a famous admiral of the Turkish fleet in the sixteenth century. The Turkish admiral admits in a series of notes on the map that he compiled and copied the data from a large number of source maps, some of which dated back to the 4th century BC or earlier. The Piri Reis map shows the western coast of Africa, the eastern coast of South America, and the northern coast of Antarctica. The northern coastline of Antarctica is perfectly detailed. The most puzzling however is not so much how Piri Reis managed to draw such an accurate map of the Antarctic region 300 years before it was discovered, but that the map shows the coastline under the ice. Geological evidence confirms that the latest date Queen Maud Land could have been charted in an ice-free state is 4000 BC. The question is: Who mapped the Queen Maud Land of Antarctic 4000 BC? To draw his map. Piri Reis used several different sources, collected here and there along his journeys. Piri Reis had probably come into possession of charts once located in the Library of Alexandria, the well-known most important library of the ancient time

1782 Janvier Map of Africa
1782 Janvier Map of Africa WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: L'Afrique divisee en ses Principaux Etats. Description: A fine example of Jean Janvier's 1782 map of Africa. Janvier's map covers the entire continent of Africa as well as the island of Madagascar and adjacent parts of Europe. Arabia, and Persia. Like most 18th century maps of Africa, the present example is rife with speculation regarding the largely unexplored interior. What little was known of Africa, however, Janvier incorporates here in an impressive compilation of the most up to date reports from colonial, missionary, and exploratory entradas into the interior of the continent. Thus well mapped parts of the continent are limited to the Mediterranean Coast, Morocco, the Senegambia, the Congo, South Africa, the Kingdom of Monomatapa, Abyssinia, ... moreand Egypt. Morocco, Egypt, and the southern Mediterranean Coast(Barbary) were well known to Europeans since antiquity and Janvier's accurate mapping of these regions reflects continual contact. Further south the colonial enclaves along the Niger River(Senegal and Gambia) the Congo River, and South Africa reflect considerable detail associated with European penetration by traders and missionaries. The land of Monomopota around the Zambezi River was explored early in the 16th century by the Portuguese in hopes that the legendary gold mines supposedly found there would counterbalance the wealth flowing into Spain from the New Word. Unfortunately these mines, often associated with the Biblical kingdom of Ophir, were mostly tapped out by the 15th century. Abyssinia(modern day Ethiopia) was mapped in detail by early Italian missionaries and of considerable interest to Europeans first, because it was(and is) predominantly Christian; second, because it was a powerful well-organized and unified kingdom; and third because the sources of the Blue Nile were to be found here. The remainder of the continent remained largely speculative though Janvier rarely lets his imagination get

Vaugondy frist issued this map in 1749 and it went through at least seven states with editions appearing as late as 1810. Issued on the cusp of Europe’s great wave of exploration into the interior of Africa. Vaugondy loosely based this map on the earlier work of De L’Isle and Sanson with updates to comply with the most recent cartographic information coming into Paris. The map offers impressive detail of the largely unexplored interior, featuring the names of various tribal groups and indigenous empires throughout, while at the same time, studiously avoiding presumption regarding the general geography ... moreof the interior. The well mapped coastline is consistent with earlier maps of the region, though the projection has been slightly corrected. The known lands, most explored by missionaries and early colonists, of Mediterranean Africa, Egypt, Abyssinia, Morocco, the Niger Delta, and South Africa and the Congo, are mapped according to convention with a few minor updates. The interior is largely blank of geographical features. Vaugondy abandons the tradition of filling the blanks with speculative mappings of the White Nile, the Niger, and the Mountains of the Moon. Rather he focuses on known missionary reports containing both first hand evidence of the interior and second hand information gleaned from the African indigeni. These include an embryonic mapping of Lake Malawi, with the note(in translation) that reads, It is claimed that his lake extends far to the north. Thus are Europeans beginning to understand the Rift Valley and anticipate some of the greater lakes soon to be discovered further north, including Nyasa and Victoria. To the right of the map proper a table offers a breakdown of the religious, people, islands, and cultures of Africa. As stated, this map went through

1690 Coronelli Map of Ethiopia, Abyssinia, and the Source of the Blue Nile
1690 Coronelli Map of Ethiopia. Abyssinia, and the Source of the Blue Nile WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Abissinia. Doue sono le Fonti del Nilo descritta secondo le relationi de P.P. Mendez, Almeida, Pais, Lobo, e Lodulfo del P. M. Coronelli M.C. Cosmografo della Seren. Rep. di Ventia… Description: This is Coronelli's important 1690 map of Ethiopia(Abyssinia) showing the source of the Blue Nile. This map. Focusing on Lake Tana(Tzana Dembea) covers the Ethiopian highlands from Derbeta on the Red Sea south as far as the tribal kingdoms of Sugame, Bahargamo and Gumar, all of which are located in modern southern Ethiopia. Europeans, Coronelli included, had a great interest in this region not only because of common conjecture regarding the source of the Nile, but also as a potential site of the Kingdom of Prester ... moreJohn. Though often underappreciated by historians, this is a highly significant map in the development of African cartography and, from the early 18th century on, most cartographers followed its example with regard to this important region- one of the few parts of sub-Saharan Africa to be accurately represented on maps prior to the late 19th century. Coronelli claims that this is the first map to accurately depict the sources of the Nile and, at least as regards the Blue Nile, we see no reason to dispute his claim. The cartography here is based upon the travels of Portuguese Jesuits Manuel de Almeida, Affonso Mendez, Pedro Páez, and Jerónimo Lobo, who traveled throughout Abyssinia in the mid 16th century. Coronelli correctly recognizes the importance of Lake Tana(Tzana Dembea) as well as the curious turn in the river that actually causes the Blue Nile to start it course as a southerly flowing river. The actual fonts of the Nile itself appear to the southwest of Lake Tana. The Falls of the Blue Nile, now a popular tourist destination in Ethiopia, are noted just south of the Lake. In the upper right quadrant Coronelli contrasts his perspective on the region with the

In Gojam’s sunny realm, Pure welling out, he[the Nile] through the lucid lake Of fair Dambea rolls his infant stream. Thomson, James: The Seasons: Summer” 805–8 A stunning and surprisingly accurate 1719 Map of the Source of the Nile by Alain Manesson Mallet. Details what is today the Gojjam(Goyam on map) district of Ethiopia around Lake Tana( here Bed Lac or Dambea) Accurately describes the course of the Blue Nile as it flows southward from the southeastern corner of Lake Tana before hooking around to the west and flowing northwards toward its convergence with the White Nile and, ultimately, the Mediterranean. Names numerous villages and Ethiopian Orthodox monasteries ... morethroughout. Shows mountains in profile, however, as this is not a particularly mountainous region, we can assume that Mallet must have added these merely as decorative place holders. Mallet no doubt drew this map based on the accounts of early missionaries who were active in the area throughout the late 17th century. Prepared as figure XCVI for the 1719 edition of A. Mallet’s seminal Description de l' Univers which was, itself, the largest and most comprehensive work of its kind issued to date. Size: Printed area measures 7 inches high by 4.5 inches wide. 1750 Bossuet Map of Ancient Egypt WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Carte de L'Ancienne Egypte et des Pais d'alentour. Suivant cette Histoire. Description: This is a fascinating and beautifully engraved example of Jacques Benigne Bossuet's c. 1750 map of ancient Egypt. Centered on the Nile River Delta. The map covers Egypt and part of Arabia and the Red Sea. Several ancient towns and oases along the Nile are noted. Possibly this map's most interesting aspect is its presentation of the ancient Lake Moeris(le Lac Moeris) now just a small lake called Birket Qarun and the legendary'Labyrinth' near modern day Hawara. The lost Labyrinth was described by many classical authors including Herodotus, Strabo, Diodorus and Pliny. A sprawling megalithic complex designed by Imandes for the Pharoh Amenemhet ... moreIII, the Labrynth is believed to have contained thousands of rooms filled with hieroglyphs and ancient Egyptian sculptures. Herodotus wrote about it in the fifth century B.C. Furthermore, they resolved to leave a memorial of themselves in common, and in pursuance of this resolve they made a labyrinth, a little above Lake Moeris, and situated near what is called the City of the Crocodiles. I saw it myself and it is indeed a wonder past words; for if one were to collect together all of the buildings of the Greeks and their most striking works of architecture, they would all clearly be shown to have cost less labor and money than this labyrinth. Yet the temple at Ephesus and that in Samos are surely remarkable. The pyramids, too, were greater than words can tell, and each of them is the equivalent of many of the great works of the Greeks; but the labyrinth surpasses the pyramids also. It has 12 roofed courts, with doors facing one another, 6 to the north and 6 to the south and in a continuous line. There are double sets of chambers in it, some underground and some above, and their number is 3,000; there are 1,500 of each. We ourselves saw the aboveground chambers, for we went t

1790 James Bruce Map of Ethiopia and the Source of the Nile
1790 James Bruce Map of Ethiopia and the Source of the Nile WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: To My Worthy and Learned Friend the Honourable Daines Barrington This Plan of two Attempts to Arrive at the Source of the Nile is dedicated by his most Obliged and faithful Humble Servant James Bruce. Description: This is a fascinating. Significant, beautifully engraved, intricately detailed 1790 map of Ethiopia(Abyssinia) and the source of the Blue Nile by the Scottish adventurer James Bruce. Centered on Lake Tana(Tzana) this map covers from the Ethiopian capital at Gondar south as far as the Saccala District and the Geesh Abay(Geesh Springs) The map plots Bruce’s travels in search of the source of the Blue Nile starting from the Ethiopian capital of Gondar. Local guides led Bruce southwards around Lake Tana(Tzana) and ... moreeventually down the Abay River to Gish Abay, the source of the Blue Nile. Bruce claimed to have discovered the Gish Abay springs, but in a fact that he was well aware of, was merely retracing the steps of the Jesuit missionaries Pedro Paez and Jeronimo Lobo. Bruce then traveled northwards, following the Blue Nile to its confluence with the White Nile in Nubia, before following an overland caravan route to Syene and thence back into Egypt and Europe. Bruce’s exploits were ridiculed in his day, but much of the information he collected worked its way into the cartographic corpus, appearing in later maps of the region by Cary, Thomson, Pinkerton, and others. Cartographically this map makes a number of advances and well as promotes a number of misconceptions associated with Bruce’s theories. The course of the Blue Nile as well as much of the Abyssinian interior is meticulously mapped and, by and large, accurate. Many claim that this map and Bruce’s explorations in Abyssinia also contain a subtext relating to his Masonic and Templar associations. Bruce’s ancestor, the Scottish King Robert the Bruce, harbored many of the Knights Templar during their prosecution in the 14th cent
