Caldera Harbor sailing ships 1855 antique Chile South America lithographed view CALDERA in 1852(Chile/ South America) Issued 1855. Washington, D.C. by ... moreNicholson. Lithographed in Philadelphia. By Duval& Co. Fine original antique lithograph. Made approximately 155 years ago. Printed in mid-19th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. In near VG or better condition[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting image. Sheet measures c. 8 7/8" H x 11 1/8" W. Engraved area measures c. 7" H x 9 7/8" W. 10440] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. We stand behind everything we sell. Everything we offer is guaranteed to be an authentic original antique item as described. We do not sell modern reproductions. Please visit our. Doughty beheaded at order of Sir Francis Drake c.1785 Exploration antique view Mr. Doughty beheaded by order of Sir Francis Drake. Issued London: c. 1785-90; by Alex. Hogg. Fine original antique engraving. Made approximately 220 years ago. Printed in 18th century England. On quality hand-made rag paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Created to illustrate a voyage of exploration and discovery across the world to the Southern Ocean and Pacific region. In the 18th century. Engraved illustrations such as this one were the primary method by which a person could see images of far away and exotic places. Voyages of discovery were then popular topics of discussion and men such as Dampier and Capt. Cook were heroes of their time. These"popular" types of prints were often sold individually and as part of ... moreillustrated travel accounts. All of which are now scarce and valuable today. They are much sought after as a visual record of a bygone era and are great conversational items once framed for display. When you stop to consider their age and the fact they are original engraved works of art. It's amazing how affordable they actually are. What is also very interesting is that many of these views were continually re-engraved over time. So that while titles may be identical, in fact the engraved plate may be an entirely different one. This means there are likely numerous variants for each image, something which will reveal itself with close comparision between the prints. In Good+ or better condition. Some light small staining, minor paper wrinkling and age wear, most of which is visible in the photos[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually attractive. In all. These are some of the first renderings of the coastal profiles and architecture of Brazilian cities by the Dutch. In late 1623, a force of 26 ships was sent to attack, raid and take Salvador from the Portuguese; the mission was successful, but for a short while, as the next year the Portuguese retook it. This later attack was also successful, again only for a while, as the Dutch went at it again in 1627. All are very beautifully produced, however, those of Pernambuco& Povo(divided into two views, one a profile of the city and the other a coastal profile) and S. Salvador with the battle for control with the Portuguese, are remarkable. That of Rio Grande features a large fortress, the town not heavily populated and sailing ships along the coastline. The Bahia de Todos los Santos pictures a naval engagement at the port, and shows an inset map of the region.

A View of the Straight Le Maire with Part of Tierra del Fuego and Staten Land A View of the S. W. side of Tierra del Fuego. A View of Part of the Coast of Tierra del Fuego. Voyages of discovery were then popular topics ... moreof discussion and men such as Dampier and Capt. Cook were heroes of their time. These"popular" types of prints were often sold individually and as part of illustrated travel accounts. A pleasing impression of an interesting 18th century engraved image. Well worthy of displa

1755 Postlethwayte Three Panel Wall Map of South America
1755 Postlethwayte Three Panel Wall Map of South America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: South America. Performed Under the Patronage of Louis Duke of Orleans First Prince of the Blood. Description: A curious and uncommon three panel 1755 wall map of South America by the English publisher M. Postlethwayte. A derivative of D'Anville's earlier map. Postlethwayte's map covers the entire continent from the Lesser Antilles and Panama to Cape Horn. Published in three separate panels, this map can be either joined as a single massive map as assembled, as above, in separate sections. D'Anville's map, and by extension this revision of that map by Bolton and Postlethwayte, represents a serious attempt to compile all of the accurate scientific knowledge of the South American continent available at the ... moretime. While cartographically very similar to D'Anville's map, Postlethwayte's work is a full re-engraving in which all text has been translated to English, a new cartouche of a rococo ethic incorporated, and Postlethwayte's own fascinating Anglo-centric commentary added. This primary cartographic development on this, the Postlethwayte variant of D'Anville's map is the incorporation of data associated with the expedition of Charles Marie de La Condamine- which being published in 1748 Postlethawyte postulates was not available to D'Anville. Our survey of this map beings with the coast which Spanish and Portuguese navigators had mapped with considerable accuracy as early as the late 16th century. This, like most early maps of the area, contrasts a detailed mapping of the coast with a speculative discussion of the interior, particularly Patagonia and the Amazon Basin. The map offers a fairly accurate discussion of both the east and west coasts with exceptional detail in the populated Andean regions of Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador(Labeled Quito) and Peru. This map has been enlarged and expanded by the English publishing house of Laurie and Whittle. Depicts the continent in full with an inset of the Falkland Islands. This extraordinary and highly decorative map bears up to almost endless perusal and volumes could be composed upon its content. Upper right hand quadrant features the title plate and two distance scales, one in British Miles and the other in Spanish Leagues. Cartographically speaking this is an often neglected part of the world- especially in the early 19th century. Though the coastlands had been well mapped early in the 16th century, the interior was rarely ... morepenetrated. The combination of mountainous terrain, daunting jungles, malaria, and unfriendly indigenous groups combine to make this area all but unexplorable- even today. Nonetheless, Thomson made a commendable attempt to piece together early conquistador accounts, explorer's journals, missionary records, and indigenous reports into a coherent mapping of the area. Probably the most interesting aspect of this map is Thomson’s treatment of the apocryphal Lake Parima, located dead center. Lake Parima was first identified by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 16th century- though he admittedly never saw the lake himself. Raleigh associated the lake with indigenous legends of Manoa and the supposed site of El Dorado. Many early maps actually show El Dorado" on the shores of Lake Parima, though Thomson curiously does not. However, his rendition of Lake Parima is vastly larger than most previous examples from the late 18th century- even those by other English cartographers such as Laurie and Whittle. The reality of Lake Parima and the Manoa is based upon Raleigh's misinterpretation of local trade networks. The Manoas were a river trading tribe based in the Amazon. Each year du
