It is from the first edition of Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War. Which was published by McDonnell Bros. Chicago, Ill. part one was published in 1866 and part II in 1868. With the first part completed in 1866, it was one of the first works to put into perspective the account of the Great Rebellion, complete with woodcut illustrations, most of which were drawn on the spot by such artists as Winslow Homer, Granville Perkins, Livingston Hopkins and others for Harper's Weekly which chronicled the Civil War on a weekly basis. A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The map is not mounted. Matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as seen in the first pic. There is text on the reverse. Overall. A very nicely preserved print that would frame up well! Size: The image area measures approximately 9 by 14 inches on a 11 by 16" page with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good to Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging. Basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening around the edges and one samll nick on the top edge, otherwise it is very clean and would frame up nicely. The pics are of the actual print. An unusual themed map. A beautifully executed combination of colored topographical land elevations depicted by height with red overprinted railroad lines which have been extensively referenced across the map. Along the side or bottom is a key of boxes. Where each color represents a range of heights. Thus, when viewing the map, you quickly see the topographical nature of the state. Delicately overprinted in red near the title and across the state are the extensive range of railroad lines then in operation. Printed in the very early 20th century. On a specially prepared coated paper stock which has been very richly printed. Beautifully printed map. The ink is unusually ... morerich and pleasing to the eye. On the back is a similar map of Iowa. A very scarce map which was apparently only issued as loose supplemental map sheets for an early 20th century Hammond loose-leaf atlas project. Ohio and Wood and Pleasant counties, West Virginia, printed more than 74 years ago. This map labels the steamboat route on the Muskingum River and locates the Parkersburg Marietta Interurban Railway. One of the interurban electric railroad lines that operated in the early 20th century, until the combined effects of the Great Depression and an increase in automobile travel led to their closing. The map also shows steam railroad lines. Including the Baltimore& Ohio, the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago& St. Louis, and the Northwestern Virginia. It even locates individual houses and farms! Some of the pages have some water spots. Foxing and some pages have faired better than others, all and all they have survived over 70 years. Most of the age on the pages give the maps a well worn. Aged appearance. The colors are vibrant and the maps are still readable and framable. I will be posting more maps of states and countries. The material placed around the top may need to be glued again at the seam soon and there is a very tiny bit of glue showing just at the seam. There is a tiny amount of discoloration of the inside lining at the top and one place on the inside lining farther down which could be a glue stain. The fabric around the top was not put in place evenly and shows just a bit of the lining along part of the top. This could probably be fixed by anyone with a little craft know how. The lampshade as a whole appears to be in good condition and is still extremely cute.

And difficult to come by. It is a rare Auto-Trails map. The Library of Congress Catalog lists only one source for these early automobile touring maps, and now you can own one of these very desirable pieces of early motoring Americana. The AUTO-TRAILS system of highways predated not only the Interstate Highway system. But is also earlier than the numbered US Highway system. There were 48 Transcontinental Auto-Trails routes in all, and they were all named, rather than numbered. They were built not by the Federal government, or even by state governments, but by promoters and citiznes at the state, county and local level. With names like the Dixie Highway, the ... moreLincoln Highway and the Old Spanish Trail Highway, these routes were begun around 1914, and were all complete by 1924, when the US Government designed a new, numbered highway system. The US Highway System used many of the routes of the Auto-Trails System, but slowly, the old named routes were superseded and forgotten except by local history buffs. This Auto-Trails map is two-sided. The first side is a full color county and town map in the traditional 19th Century style that focuses on routes of railroads and topographical features. It also shows newly established electric power lines in red. The reverse shows the newly created State Highway System of unnumbered routes. Some of these form the Auto-Trails system through the state. I also have a US Map that serves as the key for the Theodore Roosevelt International Highway route. When you buy this map.
