Smooth paper, They were'tipped in' to the atlas so it was easy to remove them without damaging them in any way. Condition The maps are in very good to fine condition. There are no marks. American the Wonderland 1940 ERNEST DUDLEY CHASE Pictorial Map HAND SIGNED
Up for auction: RARE America the Wonderland: A Pictorial Map of the United States. Designed and drawn by Ernest Dudley Chase of Winchester Mass in 1940 and HANDSIGNED by the artist. Wow. First published in 1940. This nostalgic pictorial map is a colorful tapestry, brimming with patriotism and state pride, whimsically illustrating the landmarks that make each state unique! Renowned artist Ernest Dudley Chase used cartographical techniques dating back to the Renaissance to create this pictorial map's unique vision of America from the Grand Canyon to the Empire State Building to the Lincoln Memorial and all the quirky local flavor in between. Chase was the acknowledged expert in the greeting card business in the United States with publication of his book“The Romance of Greeting Cards” 1926) the first complete history of the greeting card industry. Chase’s maps were an extension of his work as a graphic artist for Rust Craft and also reflected an international trend toward pictorial mapmaking. These decorative maps. Which experienced resurgence in public popularity after 1913, are a genre in which the cartography is animated with illustrations of buildings, people, and animals. Often including historical references, the maps also frequently depicted airplanes and other modes of transportation. Borrowing from typical Renaissance cartography, Chase and other pictorial mapmakers used embellishments like compass roses, ornate cartouches, and decorative borders.

Here is a nice early National Geographic Society full size map entitled" The Southwestern United States" During this era. And later, Nat Geo compiled many regional maps to accompany feature articles in their monthly magazines. During this era, the 1930's and 1940's, Nat Geo produced many true Pictorial Maps which also doubled or tripled as Historical and/or Thematic Maps. This map features a very distinctive and artistic border that is executed in the Art Deco style prevalent in this era. The Great Depression. Nat Geo maps are also cartographically accurate and utilitarian, complied in varying degrees of sophistication and complexity. The geographic information on this map is particularly detailed. Actually. The area covered in this map as the Southwestern USA is quite large, approximately 1/5 of the US. This map also has ... morethe theme of Exploration. There is a very attractive Key that is indexed to 24 sites on the map that commemorate historical explorations into the Southwest. The map's chief cartographer i s James M Darley. It is copyrighted 1940 and printed by A. Hoen& Company. Baltimore. The print is an original lithographic copy. The artwork associated with this map is located within its highly decorative and Art Deco design border. There are 16 round illustrations picturing famous places and structures located in the Southwest. Such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Hoover Dam, both less than 10 years old when this map was published. The map is a large wall map, 34 3/4" x 26" It was folded originally into 16 equal size panels. This map is in excellent if not near mint condition. Please see the Condition Section where I go into detail as to condition. Not the rarest of early National Geographic maps. Cram's Commercial Map of the United States 1940 Census Color Map
This auction features an original Cram's Commercial Map of the United States based on 1940 federal census populations. The color map measures approximately 32" x 22" and originally sold for 35 cents. It was published by the George F. Cram Company of Indianapolis. Indiana. The map is in very good condition with some light wear. The cover has worn corners. Some light discoloration and some wrinkling around the edges. The map itself is in excellent condition with a couple of small separations in the creases at the bottom but otherwise bright colors and no rips, stains, etc.
