This auction is for a pair of antique solid brass candle wall sconces. That hold 3 candles each. Each candle is placed in the"bud" of a stylized open flower. And each candle holder is threaded and can be unscrewed. The middle holder on each sconce is slightly askew, which was part of the original manufacture. Each sconce is quite solid, and no part can be easily bent. Each is 17" high and 14" wide, and extends 4" from the wall. In the close-up photo of the back, the screws holding the arms can be seen, as well as the metal hook from which each hangs. My late husband bought these wall sconces at a Vermont antique shop in the mid-1940's. They were authenticated at that time as having been made in the early 1900's. He used them at one time. So there is some candle residue from use years ago. However, they have ... morebeen unused and packed in a carton for the last 45 years. Neither has ever been polished, and both retain their patina. This pair of sconces was very recently appraised for $450-$600, by the fine arts director at an auction house. A pair of solid brass girandoles. The bevelled oval mirrors surmounted by putti wearing turbans and flanked by more putti with palm leaves. Two candles supported on acanthus and foliage scrolls. Converted for electricity. Overall height about 13½" and just over 6½" wide. Project from the wall about 3½" Solid brass backs. When used as candle holders. The mirrors reflect the warm light beautifully. Where they have been converted to electricity. The wires are just about visible weaving around the arms. These measures 12" tall x 7" off the wall. Good original wiring. These work fine and have a vintage patina to the brass. A magnet does not stick anywhere to these lights. One of the lamps is missing a small brass ball at the top that I have replaced with a nut and bolt. If you found a round brass head bolt you could do better than I did but I couldn't find one. (2) Set of Antique Double Arm Solid Brass Wall Light Sconces-Rewired-w/sockets
I used to polish all my brass lights until I learned. Not all buyers like the high polished look. Some like them just like you see these. If I polish them, I loose a little of the market of buyers because they like the patina left on the light. If you prefer yours polished, these would look amazing and it wouldn't be hard at all with just a little time and some brasso. I found these in the rafters of an out building at an estate sale. They wasn't in terrible condition but the sockets were pretty much toast. The lights used to have the type socket with a roll switch on each socket. One of the pics shows where the flange just below the bulb has the place cut out for such a socket. If you want, you could put this type socket back in it. The opening can be turned to the back so it can't be seen. I just think it limits as to where ... morethe lights could be used if the switch was on the socket. You could just turn it on before mounting them and the switch would then work them but most of the time these will be used where you can't reach the light to use that type switch. Anyway, it has brand new sockets and wire in it, so they are ready to use if this application fits your needs. These are solid brass and not plated. Judging by the sockets that was in them and the wiring, I'd say 30's or 40's but I don't think they are any newer than that. Beautiful matching set and well made. You should know their size by the pics I took with a tape measure. The shades are pretty common and you can still find many different ones to go with these. These are also versital because you can turn them up or down. Each shade holder only has 2 out of 3 of the screws that holds the shades in the light. Plenty enough if they are turned up, if you mount them turned down, you will probably need to make sure you have all 3 screws in the holder or the shade will fall out.
