Antique Victorian. Neo Etruscan 18k gold and intaglio carved lapis lazuli gemstone earrings. Made circa 1850- 1880. Each earring is approximately 7/8 inches at longest point. Total weight is 7 grams. Classic. Elegance: oval cabochon deep blue lapis lazuli gemstones handcarved with a figure of a wild boar and a lion, respectively. Marvely tiny detail- one can almost see individual hairs on each animal. It is possible that the intaglios originate in the Ancient Roman era, but the buyer will make the decision of whether they are 150 or 2000 years old. The lapis is set in a beautiful Neo Etruscan/ Classic Revival 18 carat gold setting. Constituting concentric rings of twisted filigree gold wires of different patterns and sizes. Antique Mourning Brooch Enamel Gold Cabochon Amethyst Neo Classic 19C (#3756)
Antique Victorian Neo Etruscan memorial/ mourning 14K gold. Black enamel and cabochon amethyst target brooch. Made circa 1860-1880. Bullseye shape- almost 1/1/2 inches in diameter. Weighs 17 grams. Round. With borders of twisted gold wire in different thicknesses, very typical of the Neo Etruscan filigree jewellery of the time. The sloping surface, like the side of a cone is decorated with a black enamel pattern, leading to more filigree/wire work, which borders a fabulous cabochon amethyst- 1/2 inch in diameter. The pin at the back has a simple C-clasp. The original curved glass/crystal covers a compartment that might be used for a locket of hair of the departed/ loved one. Part of a name. Written in black is visible. There are no hallmarks. But the gold tests for at least 14 carats. General condition is very good. VINTAGE FRENCH TIME WORN TREASURES. This is a fabulous antique French. Neo-classic burr walnut veneer& brass jewelry box, which I would say dates from the early 20th century or late 19th. The combination of the burr walnut and the brass frieze(running around the lid and the top and bottom of the box) is a delight for the eye. There are 5 little cartouches on the lid. The centre one is the largest at 1½" in diameter and it features a classical maidens head. Surrounded by wheat. The 4 smaller ones are positioned on each corner and there are two egyptian heads and two of a behatted gentleman. The box is in good condition but there is a small area of veneer missing on the back left corner- as per photograph 5. The box is lined in green felt. Antique Victorian Classic Revival/ Neo Etruscan pendant earrings. 14-15kt gold and carved cameos. Made circa 1850-80's. Exact origin unknown. Measurements: total length of earrings. Excluding the wires, is 7cm. Combined weight is 15.1 grams. Exquisite pair of carved cameos: one woman looks right. The other left, so they are a true pair. Each one most likely depicts an Ancient Greek or Roman goddess. Wonderful carving with very fine detail. The cameos are set in Classic Revival gold mounts with fine filigree work and granulation in concentric bands, the raised portions catching and playing with the light, adding to the visual appeal. Below is a series of loops, allowing for total flexibility and movement, with filigreed half globes above tear-drop tassles that swing as the wearer moves. The cameos are suspended from a branching pair of ... moreclub-formed arms, forming a'V' shape and also embellished with filigre goldwork. These in turn are joined to a shell-shaped surmount with granulation and filigree work, reminiscent of rams' heads. Workmanship and design is outstanding and of museum quality. French period of Napoleon III. Large curved decorative band is very thick, probably would not have lasted this long if it wasn't. Two small rough spots on back edges and a bubble to the shell at the center front. Which is much less noticeable actually. Than it appears to be in our photos. It was probably there from the beginning. Because it is exactly on top of the tiny brass screw on the back. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema but his style of painting fell out of favour with the arrival of painters like Picasso. He committed suicide at the age of 61 and is said to have written in his suicide note that"the world was not big enough" for him and a Picasso. His already estranged family. Who had disapproved of his becoming an artist, were ashamed of his suicide and burned his papers. No photographs of Godward are known to survive. Works Godward was a Victorian Neo-classicist. And therefore a follower in theory of Frederic Leighton. However, he is more closely allied stylistically to Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, with ... morewhom he shared a penchant for the rendering of Classical architecture, in particular, static landscape features constructed from marble. The vast majority of Godward's extant images feature women in Classical dress. Posed against these landscape features, though there are some semi-nude and fully nude figures. The titles reflect Godward's source of inspiration: Classical civilisation, most notably that of Ancient Rome(again a subject binding Godward closely to Alma-Tadema artistically) though Ancient Greece sometimes features, thus providing artistic ties, albeit of a more limited extent, with Leighton. Given that Classical scholarship was more widespread among the potential audience for his paintings during his lifetime than in the present day. Meticulous research of detail was important in order to attain a standing as an artist in this genre. Alma-Tadema was, as well as a painter, an archaeologist who attended historical sites and collected artifacts that were later used in his paintings: Godward, too, studied such details as architecture and dress, in order to ensure that his works bore the stamp of authenticity. Antique French Neo-Classic Beautiful Burr Walnut & Brass Jewelry Box 7½" By 5¼"
VINTAGE FRENCH TIME WORN TREASURES This is a fabulous antique French. Neo-classic burr walnut veneer& brass jewelry box, which I would say dates from the early 20th century or late 19th. The burr walnut is surmounted by a brass frieze which circles the top and bottom sections of the sides and the top of the lid. There are 5 little cartouches on the lid. The centre one is the largest at 1½" in diameter and it features a classical maidens head, surrounded by wheat. The 4 smaller ones are positioned on each corner and there are two egyptian heads and two of a behatted gentleman. The box is in good condition but there is a small area of veneer missing on the back left corner- as per photograph 5. The box is lined in green felt.
