It's painted off white though this is chipping away. Glass panes have a ruby red diamond center surrounded with yellowish orange and pink pieces. Lantern has a door with latch. MEASUREMENTS Approx 23" long x 13" at widest. CONDITION Item shows a lot of wear including chipping paint and surface rust. The bottom glass piece is broken. The top glass piece is missing, two panes have fallen out, and one pane is missing a yellow piece of glass. The frames of the two panes that have fallen out are a little misshapen. It is an ornate shape and has acanthus leaves under the arms and on the central cage. The round central section at the base also has a hammered metal effect. Castles and chateaus in small towns and in the countryside in order to make way for more new modern and less drafty conveniences. As a result, lots of their architecture was shipped abroad to the U.S. to resellers and antique dealers by the container load. This Antique French Country rustic wall sconce made of wood and wrought iron with faux candles holder covers is part of this liquidation in history. This is a great primitive sconce, which would give that typical French country cottage feel to your home and fabulous decor for indoors or outdoors as well. I purchased this pair directly from a French seller ... moreout of Normandy. France who strictly sold only vintage and antique chandeliers, wall sconces and lighting taken from all over the French countryside, so I personally know these to be genuine. These primitive sconces are from the early 1900’s and taken from an old cottage style farmhouse. They are in excellent condition as measure approximately 7” inches tall by 5” inches wide on the wood backing plaques. They were previously wired according to French standards, but I have replaced them with more modern safe American standard candle bulb parts& wires. I do not know what kind of wood the back plates are made of and they may have possibly been added at a later date when the wiring was installed on the iron pieces. Not for sure on this and just my personal thoughts. They are in excellent antique condition showing some light to medium rust patina from having been kept in storage in a barn. They are not an exact matched set with on of the sconces showing the wrought iron curl being larger than the other. However, this does not detract from the use or function of these sconces. This vintage/antique lamp is from an estate. It stands 17" tall and is 12" in diameter. There are six sides(4 1/2" wide) and six sharp metal points at the top and bottom. There are metal pieces on each side that would have held glass panels at one time. The fixture hangs from a 15" metal link chain and there is a metal floral looking base that secures to the ceiling. The lamp has one socket in the center which is surrounded by a 8 sided metal"cup" The lamp will need to be rewired and new glass panels replaced if desired. This is a superb antique French timeworn stained glass lantern that would be perfect for indoors or outdoors. It simply fits around an existing light fitting and is such a wonderful period display piece. It dates from the early 1900s and is such a charming confection. The wrought iron frame is embellished with scrolls and curls with the top border of the stained glass section having scrolls with Fleur de Lys ends. The frame finish is distressed with age and it could be waxed. Painted or left just as it comes. The frame is all good and strong. There are four stained glass panels each one made glass oblongs each with a centre diamond cut jewel like piece. As you will see from the photographs one piece of glass has a missing ... moreshard. But covered under a roof of the entrance. So these were protected from the rain etc… The lantern have been painted numerous times over the years, as these hung outside. Here and there are some rust spots coming trough. You can either strip the paint of or paint over this color to make it a more distract appearance. Just to give you a couple of ideas. These sconces were probably custom made at the time for this house. The estate these came from were higher class of houses for that time of period. Now the size.
