But it will really always be"Grandpa's writing desk" Unfortunately my seller is downsizing their home and grandpa's desk needs to find a new place to go. It is a lovely little piece measuring 39" tall. 27" across and 15" deep. It is in nice condition given it's age, but it does have a small chip out of the front right corner post. You can see it in the photos. The interior is plain with no shelves, drawers or cubbies. The information that I received from the appraisal company is as follows: The drop front oak(not quarter-sawn oak) writing desk is a Mission style Arts and Crafts desk; there is a keyhole in the top of the fall front and a small gallery or backplate on the top back of the desk. There is an"H" stretcher in the middle bottom of the desk and a vertical"X" stretcher on each bottom side of the desk; the legs are quadrant legs; there is one drawer with round brass pulls beneath the fall front. I would date the desk C. 1900-1915; the value would be between $625.00 and $700.00 in today's retail market. Due to the size of this item it will not be available for shipping. Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor. It was hand carved in the late 17th to early 18th century as the attached professional antique appraisal from 1966 indicates. There are approx. 24 carved griffins, faces and "Gargoyle-Lion Mask Motifs". The entire front, back, top and sides (including under sides) are hand carved, "All Exposed Surfaces". This amazing desk retains the original finish and shows areas of wood separation but in my opinion the desk is in excellent condition for being untouched for approximately 300 years. I went to a ... moregood auction in upstate New York the other day and tried to pick up smaller furniture that fits within Greyhound Express size limits. Anyway this is a score and I'm proud to offer this for your consideration. I believe this is a No 17 model desk and it is truly in very nice condition with no signs of repairs or break except the bottom drawer has a minor glue in corner. The finish is very good as the pictures should show off and the original key works fine and all hardware is original and working perfectly. It is nice and sturdy a sets flush with no wobbles. It measures 47" tall x 30" wide x 17" deep. The back is not beautiful with the white wash but the original Larkin labels are present and in good shape. Once again Greyhound Express is great and should ship this for about 90 west coast and 70 east. As long as you can pick it up. Local pick up is always option too and I now have a utility trailer and can deliver within reason. I tried to picture it well to both show it off and answer questions and price it nice so shipping is easier on wallet. I saw the same desk in online shop for 650 plus shipping.
