1930s - 1940s Vintage Oak US Government Office Desk (Used By IRS, WSB, PSU)
This is a nice old desk from I'm guessing the 1930s or 40s. There's a lot of history in this piece- it bears property marks from the Internal Revenue Service. The Philadelphia district Wage Stabilization Board, and Penn State University. It's in good used shape but could use some refinishing to restore it to its full luster. The only thing missing is one of the small side drawers(the empty drawer hole had been previously used as an open access to the top of the middle drawer for storing blueprints, etc. Note: The middle desk drawer is not visible in the first picture- It IS included(picture#7) It measures 60 inches wide by 30 inches tall by 34 inches deep. Up for auction is 2 old oak desk name plates that were made by a master carpenter in the 40's or 50's. They came from an old shutdown cabinet makers barn. They are beautifully stained and finished in some type of polyurethane. The measure 10 1/4" x 3 3/4" x 2 5/8" deep. Would make a beautiful gift for even the highest executive. Antique Tiger Oak Desk, curved drawer fronts, Unusual, Vintage, French maybe
Antique Tiger Oak Desk This beautiful desk has been sitting in storage for 30 years. It looks really old. But I have no idea how old it is or where it came from. The number 126 is impressed into the underside of the desk, but I have found no other marks on it. There are 5 drawers on one side. And 5 false drawer fronts on the other. As you can see in the photos, 4 of the 5 drawer fronts are curved, and the drawer joints are dovetailed. There are keyholes in the drawers(no keyholes on the false fronts, see photo#1) All 5 drawer locks are present, but I do not have the key. I’m sure that the drawer pulls are not the originals, since the pulls on two of the drawers cover up the keyholes. All 4 caster wheels roll well. The wood grain is amazing. But there are several condition issues. Two of the boards that make up the desk top have separated(have ... morecome unglued) and some crazy person(not me) drove a couple of headless nails into the boards to hold them in place. The nail heads are double-circled in yellow in the last photo. When I flipped the desk over, I saw the nails coming through an inch or so. It looks like it would not be too difficult to push them out from the underside. Also, something was spilled on the top, maybe ink. The stain is circled in yellow. The four inside corners of the desk are banged up, due to being struck repeatedly by a chair. A yellow arrow points to the most seriously damaged corner. It's very solid& quite attractive despite is custom huumm paint job. It looks like pretty OAK underneath. Just needs some elbow grease to bring it back out. It needs work but it's not all hammered up, doesn't look like it's been abused(except for paint) I have no keys to it, unknown if locks work properly. A beautiful 1/4 sawn Tiger Oak Desk. made by Standard Furniture Company in Herkimer. NY. ca 1895- 1920. The top is about 30" deep and 50" wide& 1 1/2" thick. The build design allows you to get it into tight places. The top comes off of the pedestals and the stringers come out- makes it easy for one person to move. The pedestal feet are wrapped in brass and all the original hardware is intact. The drawers lock when the center drawer is in. The kneehole is braced with brass chair impactstrips on both sides and is about 19" wide. Left side- 3 separate drawers Right side- 2 separate drawers(top is standard. I acquired this wooden lap desk at a local estate sale of a wood worker here in Lancaster County. PA. It appears to be made of oak. It is a slant top lap desk with a brass piano hinged lid that opens to store paper. Pens, pencils, etc. There is also a built in pencil tray groove at the top.
