The writing surface is velveteen. I think there were two little pull tabs on each side, which have left a small hole in the velvet. There are minor scratches on the lid and the key is missing.

There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. This desk has a black inlay in several areas as well. The crown is carved with a fan shape at the center and spoon carvings and lines all along the top. There is a secret door behind the crown on the top of the piece that has a lock and opens to the center section. The doors are paneled and the black inlay is very nice on them. This piece has a great patina and is in great condition for its age. It is antique and may not be perfect. I do not know the exact date it was made. It was made by the Pettibone Mfg. Co. in Cincinnati. OH. There is a brass tag on the center front of the desk part that says the company name and location. It says LIBRARY AND SOCIETY GOODS as well. The measurements are: Base: 29 ½ inches tall, 38 5/8 inches side to side and 30 ¼ inches front to back. It weighs 33 pounds. Margolis Mahogany Slant Top, Block Front Desk
Beautiful mahogany slant top. Block front desk made by Nathan Margolis, in very good condition. This desk has everything you would want: beautiful finish work, large storage drawers, and internal cubis and drawers.The desk is 42 7/8 inches high, 21 inches deep, and 39 3/4 inches wide. It has all original hardware, ball and claw feet, secret compartments, and a key to lock the top portion of desk. It was commissioned by NL Gardner in 1905, and has been in the family since. The back board is slightly warped as shown in picture, and there are slight nicks on feet, but no significant damage. Margolis is reputed to have been the best cabinet maker of the twentieth century and has pieces at Winterthur. He is known for making high quality. Traditional pieces. I was told by a reputable antiques dealer that there is only one other desk exactly like ... morethis: the one that was made for the Governor of Rhode Island. When our great grandfather commissioned this. He asked the same cabinet maker to make one identical to the Governor's. It features original brass hardware, a single pull-out drawer beneath the desk, and six compartments inside to store letter, bills, etc. I estimate the age of this piece to be approximately 110 years. It is in good to very good condition as indicated in the Condition description. There are some light scratches and cup marks as pictured. There is no reserve on this really beautiful antique walnut slant front drop lid secretary desk with bookcase top. The bookcase top has 2 shelves above the base of it. The desk is 80 inches tall. 39 inches wide, 17 inches deep. There are 2 dove tailed drawers at the writing surface level, one on either side of the 8 divided storage sections. The writing surface is in good condition. When the drop is open it is supported by 2 wooden boards that pull out under it. When the drop is closed, you can access 1 long dove tailed drawer and below the drawer 2 doors open to a base with 1 shelf in it. All the brass hardware is original and in good condition except a repaired handle on the left side of the bottom of the base. Excellent condition. Buyer must arrange and pay for pick up and delivery.

Glass doors open and close smoothly keeping books dust-free. A small lock on bottom shelf secures one of the doors. The other closes with little effort. As can be expected with most antiques. Also, the pull knob on front of desk is loose and interior lock is missing. Left side hinge is replacement, not original, and two small dividers missing from inside compartments. This rare Gustav Stickley slant-top desk is a thing of beauty and a classic example of furniture from the Arts and Crafts period and the Mission style. The Stickley markings date this desk as being made between 1912-1916. It is made of solid oak hardwood and(on the slant top) tiger-eye oak veneer. The construction is primarily mortis and tenon and peg joinery. With the back piece nailed on with original hardware. The finish and patina are original, as is all of the other hardware. Vintage Wooden Oak Handmade slant top Lap Desk
I acquired this wooden lap desk at a local estate sale of a wood worker here in Lancaster County. PA. It appears to be made of oak. It is a slant top lap desk with a brass piano hinged lid that opens to store paper. Pens, pencils, etc. There is also a built in pencil tray groove at the top. Great for a young child to use in their room for homework if there is not enough room for a full desk. The craftsman name was Bill Killough. Measures approx. 18" x 14" x 4" at the highest point.

Beautiful Antique Childs Slant Top Folding Desk This is just a terrific find! It is an antique child desk made by the Paris Mfg Co. in Maine. It is made somewhere after the turn of the century. It is solid oak. The desk has a slant top which opens to an ample amount of storage. There is a ink mark on the inside of the top. There is a bit of staining on the inside and one of the pegs to fold this desk has been repaired by a carpenter. This desk is just wonderful! Great to fold up and stand in a corner when not in use. It is easy to fold up and move around as it is a very convenient size. This desk is clearly marked on the underside Paris Mfg. Co. They manufactured childrens desks of all kinds including this one. Antique 19th Century Primative Pine Wood Schoolmaster's Slant Top Desk Gallery
Primitive Schoolmaster's Desk This is a gorgeous piece of early American history. This is a primitive schoolmaster's style desk. We are quite certain that this piece dates back to the early part of the 1800's. The desk was hand-made and was constructed using square nails. We suspect that the wood used is pine. Some sections of the desk were made using wood planks as large as 22" wide! A board on the top is 17 1/2" wide and one on the side measures 21" wide. Boards of this size only reinforce the old age of this piece. The desk has the following measurements: Height: 35" Width: 38" Depth: 28 1/2" Kneehole Opening: 23 3/4" tall(at center) by 19 3/4" wide, There are four roughly-cut drawers on the right side of the desk. They measure as follows: First: 11 3/4" wide by 18 1/4" deep ... moreby 2" tall Second: 11 3/4" wide by 18 1/4" deep by 3 1/4" tall Third: 11 3/4" wide by 18 1/4" deep by 4 1/4" tall Fourth: 11 3/4" wide by 18 1/4" deep by 5 1/4" tall, The drawer bottoms show evidence of being cut by a mill saw. They are all hand-planed and chamfered. One of the drawers does have a small hole in the face where a lock was removed. The right side of the desk is supported by 2 simple-style turned legs. There is a railed book gallery running across the back/top of the desk. This is in great. Antique condition overall with some general signs of age and use. Regardless of age, this desk is still very sturdy. It appears as though the desk was once painted, but was later striped to reveal the natural wood finish. Tiny pieces of evidence of the previous paint job can be found in corners, cracks and crevices. The drawer pulls are old, but do not appear to be original to this piece. This desk is nearly 200 years old. It shows wear consistent to its age in the form of cracks, chips, scratches and general bumps and bruises. This desk belonged to my grandfather in the early 1900s. My father who would be 76 this year if he were still alive spilled some airplane glue on it when he was a child and there's a spot on it from that. This piece has wear and tear so I took photos of everything to represent it as accurately as possible. I was offered $850 for it about 15 years ago from an antique dealer who came out to appraise it when my father passed. I do not recall the brand. The name or much else about it. I inherited it from my father after he passed away and only know the history of what I have told you. It is not a super heavy piece of furniture.
