It measures 16" by 9" by 4 1/2" The exotic wood veneer(possibly ... moremahogany) has a very dramatic and variable grain that ranges from amber to black. The exquisite top features a radiant Mother of Pearl Cartouche( 2" by 1" with no engravings or markings) It has eight Mother of Pearl Discs that are positioned near the corners. The discs are connected by pewter'stringing lines' to form two rectangles on the top. I believe that the two shortest pewter'stringing lines' on the ends of the inner rectangle may be replacement pieces. There are also four Mother of Pearl discs on the front of the box. Connected by pewter'stringing lines' These also form a rectangle. The escutcheon has an inlay that is a bone color. But does not appear to be Mother of Pearl. The top opens to reveal a green velvet fabric-covered writing slope which appears to be original. There are five separate compartments for ink wells. Nibs, wax, stamps etc. There is also a removable concave pen tray with storage space beneath it. The green velvet-covered'top partition' pulls down with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. The storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 7 1/4" For stationary. The green velvet-covered'bottom partition' pulls open with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. This storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 5" For letters. The hinges and fittings are brass and there is a flush brass handle on each end of the box. There is a small chip in the veneer on the left front corner(photo#3) There is a 1/2" segment of the pewter'stringing line' that is missing in the same area. But it will really always be"Grandpa's writing desk" Unfortunately my seller is downsizing their home and grandpa's desk needs to find a new place to go. It is a lovely little piece measuring 39" tall. 27" across and 15" deep. It is in nice condition given it's age, but it does have a small chip out of the front right corner post. You can see it in the photos. The interior is plain with no shelves, drawers or cubbies. The information that I received from the appraisal company is as follows: The drop front oak(not quarter-sawn oak) writing desk is a Mission style Arts and Crafts desk; there is a keyhole in the top of the fall front and a small gallery or backplate on the top back of the desk. There is an"H" stretcher in the middle bottom of the desk and a vertical"X" stretcher on each bottom side of the desk; the legs are quadrant legs; there is one drawer with round brass pulls beneath the fall front. I would date the desk C. 1900-1915; the value would be between $625.00 and $700.00 in today's retail market. Due to the size of this item it will not be available for shipping. We have since found out through an online appraisal company that is is an Antique Drop Front Writing Desk" from around 1900-1915. But it will really always be"Grandpa's writing desk" Unfortunately my seller is downsizing their home and grandpa's desk needs to find a new place to go. It is a lovely little piece measuring 39" tall. 27" across and 15" deep. It is in nice condition given it's age, but it does have a small chip out of the front right corner post. Up for your consideration is a beautiful antique oak writing desk. It is in the Mission or Arts and Crafts design. We have had this for y ears in our home. It is quite sturdy. The measurem e nts are 26" deep x 38" wi de x 29 3/4" tall. The front drops down and in side is a writing platform w ith an inkwell hole. Pencil rest, and cubbies in t he back for en v elopes. Etc. To the right is a drawer which actually comes completely out. The hinges have been replaced on this front piece as well as t he glass kno bs. There is an old keyhole and the lock seems to still be intact. However we do not have a key. My husband had his computer on this desk and be cause the underside of the des k is open. He was able to keep the keyboard on the pull-out platform, and the wires fit right throu gh. The wood is oak and is in beautiful condition ... morefor being old.
