Antique Leather Inlay Desk-Maddox Original (Refurbished)
This is a Maddox Manufacturing Leather In-lay Desk that was in distressed condition when I bought it. I have spent many hours trying to recondition the wood and bring back the piece to an elegant and more modern look. I replaced the damaged leather top and replaced with a black leather and paired it with a cherry stain that gave it back its period elegance with todays colors. I did recondition the hardware and it turned out very nice. It is a brass plated metal that it in good condition. Considering what they looked like when I got the desk. I did the best I could but it isn't perfect, slight imperfections on the leather desk top cut(pictured) but overall has tremendous character. It does have a Maddox Metal Manufacturing plate on the rear of the center desk drawer and also part of the Manufacturers original Sticker on bottom of the drawer. ... moreI have included pictures of these plus some before and after photos. Measures 73 1/2" tall, 46" wide and 12 1/2" deep. A few light scratches that is common to all antique and used furniture. Quality made and in very good condition. Sorry about some of the poor quality pictures as the sun was going down and causing shadows, In some pictures the wood looks darker than it really is. There are a few scratches, the worst being on the top of desk where the bookshelf sits, see last pic. It is missing the finial on the top center. There are 7 original handle pulls, the bottom 2 are missing the bale. There is one that doesn't match. There is also a strip of wood that was broken where the lock goes on the top of the desk, you can only see it if the desk is open. See pic#5 Other than the mentioned issues. What is certain is that most of the confusion lies in that these OLD VINTAGE/ANTIQUE pieces were a result of a series of OLD Colonial Revival-style reproductions, created under the trade name"Maddox Colonial Reproductions" However, these"reproductions" were created between about 1918 and the 1950's! So while they are"reproductions" of much older colonial-age furniture pieces. The"reproductions" are now themselves vintage& antique. Make sense? The original key opens the desk, 4 large drawers, and the china cabinet. contents not included) The feet are the ball and claw and the slanted desk has a small cabinet, hidden pockets, and 4 small drawers. This is a well cared for family heirloom from a non- smoking home. There are a few minor scratches attributed to its age. The original Maddox Tag is attached to the back of cabinet.
