This is a beautiful Louis XIV Walnut French armoire. It stands tall and proud and is an impressive piece with rich texture to the wood finish. The motif looks like an eye at the top and an eye on the bottom- quite unusual! The armoire is 24" deep. 54" 4'5" wide, 91" 7'7" tall. We are unsure of the weight but estimate at around 175lbs. Oscar Wilde A Very Good Quality c.1860s Gothic Revival Oak Hall Cupboard Period: Mid Victorian Provenance: Unknown Date: c.1855-65 Width: 32 inches Depth: 15.5 inches Height: 88.5 inches(all at extremities) all at maximum) The nineteenth century Gothic oak hall cupboard on a plinth base with a ripple moulded arched mirrored door of eleven glazed panels. The arch having applied carved decoration, and further carved niche sides, the brass ring handle to the door opening to reveal two adjustable hanging rails and a series of coat hooks, survives from the early to middle part of Victorian period England. The cupboard is presented in good overall order. Two of the rectangular plates are possibly later replacements ... morewhilst the other nine are certainly original and have sparkling and foxing to the plates. All nicely greyed. Two of the glazing bars are later replacements. This small issue aside she is in a totally original state and the oak has a very good colour and patination. The handle, hooks and rails, and all of the carved decoration is seemingly original. Although the lancet or arched shape of this cupboard is synonymous with gothic design. One often doesn’t see an entire door panel being mirrored and the superiority of the piece is very evident right through from the build quality to the applied carvings. Hall cupboards of this type are usually also doubles so the rather slim proportions of this example make it rather more versatile and elegant. We can’t find another even similar to this example having been sold which may suggest it was privately commissioned. A man who remains any length of time in a modern Gothic room. It is Scottish and is dated circa 1870. The primary wood is walnut with burl-walnut decorative elements on the doors. The mirrors are hand-beveled as well as the glass medallions in the side doors. The armoire was entirely hand-constructed and has its original finish. Hardware and glass. Inside are the original sliding brass hooks for hanging clothing. The sides also have the"double- bombe" shape as well as front. Book-matched burled elmwood/ walnut veneer with scroll inlay design adorns all three front sections. Bonnet on armoire is of a serpentine design with carved scroll work. The 2 side doors open to reveal 2 adjustable interior blonde wood veneer shelves which can be removed. Center door opens to area where a wooden rod would have been suspended.rod missing but could easily be replaced. Armoire has 3 bronze rococo handles with key holes and 6 bronze hinges. Lock on left door has a separate key as its lock has been replaced at some point. The other 2 locks work with another key which ... moreis also available. Lots of storage possibilities. Armoire sections sit on raised splayed legs.total of 8 legs. The bottom apron below the doors also has a serpentine carved design. Center beveled mirror is in very good antique condition. Please look at all photos; note there is a slight separation in the wood/ veneer on lower bottom of center door which is evident but not unexpected in pieces this old; it could be dealt with by a furniture restorer or leave it as is let the natural aging be evident. Armoire"knocks down" into 2 side sections plus bonnet and several smaller pieces once top bonnet is removed so it can be more easily moved and maneuvered through doors and hallways. I have even had this armoire taken up winding stairs. Approximate overall size when assembled is 94 in. tall x 75 in. wide x 26.5 in. deep. Is anyone who would normally look at our listings would know. We rarely buy anything French or for that matter anything outside of America. But this was a different story. When I seen it I admire the quality and the craftsmanship that went into making such a nice piece. Made of quartersawn solid white oak the beauty of the wood in itself is wonderful. We just completed a total restoration and the piece needs absolutely nothing. It is handcarved and has detail everywhere you look and everywhere you would want. I would say it is in impeccable condition especially for its age dating around 1872-1880. Hey simply fantastic wardrobe. It's constructed of solid oak and handcarved in a Art Nouveau style. The front has a door with 12 individual beveled glass mirrors and a solid raised panel that's also carved. It has a very unique look to it, it actually looks like a piece that would've been made by Herter brothers but would be of later date. We just finished a complete restoration on this piece and it needs absolutely nothing. The interior consists of solid oak shelves that I pictured. They are adjustable for different variations. The crest simply lifts off for removal and the entire wardrobe can be taken apart with with four bolts. It's considered a breakdown wardrobe.
